Thanks Mike. Maybe I didn't express myself as clearly as I thought I had initially, but regardless, I hope I've got it across now. Anyway, enough about MM, back to the Janek/Hadrien show. BTW, is Matt Garrison definitely on at Bass day? There's nothing on the web page yet.
As far as I know Matt wants to do it but is trying to work out how to make the most out of a UK visit - whether to do it solo or with his trio - hopefully he'll be here either way - I've seen / heard his new solo project with live loops and projections and it's really good - fingers crossed he'll be up for coming over - he's a top guy (very down to earth) and a very fine player - but obviously that's to my taste and not necessarily to anyone else's! M
This is what I actually said : "I don't find his groove that good at all. However I feel that I prefer players who push/drive/swing more than he does". I didn't say he couldn't groove. I also qualified my comment. I then further qualified my comment (yes, I'm repeating myself yet again) by saying I didn't personally like his feel. I'm not sure what it is about what I've said that is so difficult to grasp. It appears some people have taken offence at something they think I've said (that I didn't actually say) and have gone off on one. FWIW, I don't feel that "good groove" is an absolute. It is all a question of taste. It may be that there is a collective agreement about what constitutes good groove, in the same way that there can be about what constitutes good or bad anything, but that doesn't mean that absolutely everyone must share that opinion.
Sounds fine to me - no one has to like someone else's playing just because it's the received wisdom that they are a GREAT player - you're perfectly entitled to dislike any aspect of Marcus' playing - I have absolutely not problem with that.

Wow this thread is still rocking - I'm not entirely sure where it's heading though - loads of good valid points on the whys and wherefores of solo-istic bassists being able to groove as well - and Marcus - I agree with Mark's post above - he's an immense all round musician who can play a ton of different instruments, produce, arrange, score and program AND play great bass either in support or as a soloist... Personally I think solo-istic bass-led projects are now sounding a bit dated and that a more band-focused, melody-driven way of doing things is far more the order of the day - for me melody and groove are the most important things in music - and bass solos are all very well and nice but personally speaking I'm happy with one or two a night and far happier grooving and supporting the rest of the band. Being a strong soloist is great but not at the expense of all the other aspects that make someone a great musician - I don't listen to Squarepusher for the bass playing but for the music... and don't forget Matt G was on the Whitney H tour playing low bass lines - the man CAN groove like a mutha if he needs to.
-
I agree - some of those terms lose a lot in translation - but I think 'shedding' is perfectly OK - it certainly accurately describes the process of trying stuff 'behind closed doors' you'd rather not let other people hear - which is definitely the case for me

Playing along with CD but listening through headphone

If you can stump up the cash for one of these - it's well worth it: http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/74288 -
Not that essential to the discussion but I concur, John Patitucci is the sh*t. I absolutely love Remembrance and Line By Line, and his playing with Chick Corea is unbelievable.
JP's Remembrance really is a superb record - his best for years IMHO - buy or listen to bits of it here. And this version of Giant Steps is f-ing impressive:
Wow - quite damning! I can understand what he means though. Sometimes frightening technique can be a bit of a bugbear. As funkypenguin said, Patitucci is the man really - effortless technique, doubles and is superb on both, grooves like mad and solos like a bebop sax player. On The Corner is still one of my favourites. Wish he'd kept the Smith though - I've never liked the clickety clack he gets from a Yamaha.
That's pretty full on from Gary, but there's another quote from McLaughlin on the Abstract Logix site where he talks about his latest album To The One, in which he frankly explains he effectively sacked Hadrien from the band because he played too loud... I've met Hadrien a few times and he really seems like a cool guy and very down to earth, I agree his incredible technique can be quite cold sometimes and if I'm honest guys like Gary Willis or Garrison or Etienne play with much greater musicality and far less from the POV of massive technical chops first and appropriate and proportionate musical responses second... EDIT - here's the JM quote: "RS: How did Etienne join the 4th Dimension…or why didn’t Dominique DiPiazza join? JM: I’ve known Etienne for about eight years now. I first saw him with Zawinul’s Syndicate in Nice, and we became friends at that moment. He’s a wonderful musician and human being. About two years ago we were beginning a European tour, and the day before the first gig Hadrien Feraud arrived with a broken hand. Only Dominique DiPiazza was capable of coming in on 24 hours notice, and he sweated!!! But he came through with flying colors. Prior to this tour, I’d had words with Hadrien about his volume on stage, which was excessive. I’d actually had many words with him about his volume which unfortunately, he seemed unable to change. Several months later we had a gig in Switzerland on the opening day of the Olympics in Beijing. The gig was a free concert for the Tibetan people with whom my wife and I are associated. Hadrien was healthy, and aware that this was a kind of “test” concert. Unfortunately the volume was way over the top, and shortly after I just had to let him go. Dominique has quite a career going for himself, and it was clear that I should find another bassist. I called Etienne and he was in. The rest is history, as they say."

Was lovely to see meet a good number of you guys - big thanks to Ari for the lift we left during the second half of 'the match' and the roads were wondefully quiet! Molan's basses were the highlight for me loved the Cylindar and the custom Sadowsky just lovely - it was a bit hot but overall very enjoyable - nice work and well done to all who organized things.
It's always worth going to a good teacher. They will help you progress a lot quicker. Nice one on bring able to play a few tunes in a short space of time, but can I suggest that you spend some of your practice time learning the notes on the fingerboard, and where they are on the stave. You'll thank me later.
Knowing where the notes are on the fingerboard is an absolutely KEY skill and any time spent learning where you can find any notes in any position on the fingerboard will stay with you for LIFE - reading music is also time well spent - but instinctively knowing where a note is without looking at the neck is invaluable. Good luck and keep on practicing - ten or 20 minutes a day is better than a single hour a week - little and often is how I do it... and that's after 25 years of playing Cheers Mike
Oh S**T!!! Still going to come along, but.....
Aye but by potentially missing the match you save yourself all the heart ache and agony... and if they can't win this game then stuff em - I've spent (i.e. wasted) enough time and energy on our team over the years to let this one go - it's the game AFTER this one that will be the killer - if they get that far. My thoughts on the subject anyway - looking forward to meeting you guys - I hope to be there by 12noon ish Cheers Mike

You can't go wrong with the latest version of Garageband - or Logic 9 Express - but GB is just packed with great features, they've improved the layout and it has all the same functionality as Logic - and the best bit is when you are ready to upgrade to Logic you can just import your GB recordings to Logic and rework them with all those high-end plugins.... Garageband is the reason I switched to Mac after years as a PC user - Cubase was so frustrating and unintuitive nothing worked how I wanted it to - but GB will handle MIDI stuff, it's super easy to edit things and starts you off with a ton of very useable samples and loops and some half decent VSTs as well. I promise I'm not on commission here but it's really good value for money as part of the whole iLife 09 pack at £58 - and iMovie is also pretty amazing too http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-MB966Z-A-iLi...l/dp/B0014X5XEK
I was listening to some good British Jazz/Jazz style material the other day. Some bloke with glasses, wearing a green jacket and had something to do with herbs. Well I assume it was herbs, it was spelt wrong and came out as Urb. Ooo, look, looked exactly like that post up there (can't do arrows I'm afraid ) Nice work enjoyed it.
Thanks Marv - I'm assuming you mean this - hoping to make some better stuff soon! Cheers Mike
Liane Carroll - plays amazing piano while singing a totally different (or totally same!) line. Used to smoke like a chimney during piano solos.. she's had to stop that, but it hasn't harmed her voice at all.
Liane is amazing and highly recommended live - her husband Roger Carey is a mean electric bass jazzer and really tears it up in her trio - a really underrated player IMO
May be bringing a friend with me, alas he's not any friend. He's a fantastic bassist, in-fact he makes me look like I'm a little kid playing bass. He's played with amazing people around Europe. He also has some amazing gear so again would make my gear look crap.
Cool - can you tell us who it is (yet)?
It'll be one of main session bassists in London I suspect. Which one though..
I was listening to this as well today, it's a quality album, I've never heard of the two bassists but the main one is Eric Appapoulay and Jodi Milliner on track two... Both are very groovy fellas. Eric is one of the producers on the record...
