1. At the risk of seeming extremely thick here, given everyone seems to accept that J's have less presence than P's in a noisy rock setting, how come countless loud rock bands have happily used J basses (Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zep, Judas Priest etc)????
2. Bump - a day to go on eBay, 19 watchers and no bids £700 to BC'ers (or £350 x2) and will post
3. Reply from Andy at Wizard: "Whatever we suggest I don't think you'll get the Precision balls, especially if you wish to retain the Jazz character as well. 84s may help but sadly we couldn't gaurantee it."
4.
Clarky. Ive got a set of Wizard 74's lying around at home. Your welcome to borrow the for a while. Im not selling them as i plan on using them in the future but no idea when that will be. They certainly have a bit more mid punch than any other Jazz pups ive had, and i too got them to get a bit closer to the P "presence in the mix" tone. After speaking with Andy he recommended the 84's but i felt they lost a bit too much sparkle and did sound a bit dark. . The 74's seem to keep the punch and low mids but brought a bit more sparkle back. Im not sure they really made it to P level (how could they) but it certainly got the bass a bit more up front in the mix with more kick and thicker lower mids. PM if you want them.
Thats very kind Dave. I am tempted, though, to get something a bit beefier (like 84s or DiMarzio Model J) which reminds me I need to drop a message to Andy at Wizard
5. Hey Jas, if you buy my Fender 62RI P/J it has an old set of TI Flats on so you could then get the G for just £700 More seriously I will have a dig around and see if I have a G kicking around
6. ... or £350 now and payment plan as above for balance of £350? Will also post in lots of bubble wrap and a cardboard guitar box (sorry, no case) to non-South East BC'ers (17 watchers now and no bids ...)
7. Thats a good price for an immaculate condition special run bass with the case and case candy, in my view, especially bearing in mind a new American Standard will set you the back best part of a grand these days and an American Vintage is more like £1600
8.
Omnomnomnomnom Is it a custom shop?....Seemingly a '62 vintage/reissue, but its got a 70's logo and 3 bolt neck? Colour me confused Si
I think Luke is right, its a 75 RI in a special run
9. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...0s_Reissue.html Not a 62 reissue though ...
10. Two days to go on eBay, 15 watchers, no bids ... the usual Special deal for BC'ers (also recognising that to get ultra-low action this needs a pro setup, which might cost £20-40) how about this for £700 cash?
11. Good score Nigel. White pearl would be OTT for my tastes, would prefer an aged ivory/cream scratchplate but its not my bass! Enjoy mate
12. I have done so frequently and my feedback thread tells a tale! I think you can be reasonably sure of better quality basses (for example, Sercet, I am sure I would love your Wals without even having picked them up!) but some Fenders I have owned have been very variable, including some allegedly 'higher-quality' US made ones (not the CS ones, incidentally, which have all been fab).
13.
Maybe it's because they won't make it sound like a P.
Fair do's! I thought they were Wizard's equivalent of Hot Stacks, Quarter Pounders etc ... which there are some votes for here!
14.
This.... so you will have to accept that a close cigar is as good as you can expect. I'd talk to Armstrong or Wizard.
While researching this I found an old post from BC's gafbass who said that Wizard were planning a Jazz pickup called 'the gaffer' which was to offer P-like thump .. but that was last Feb (I think) and no sign of it. I am surprised that noone has suggested Wizard Hammers here, given there is usually a lot of Wizard-love on this forum (not literally of course, apart from 51m0n )
15. Its a good question and one I struggle with as I have a very poor memory for a song from one or two plays. I found the Tascam Bass Trainer really good for learning, when the songs were already recorded as demos (as was the case in my punk and - prior to that - metal bands). Otherwise perhaps try recording a practice and playing bass along to a playback? I also have to write out the riffs and the structure (A, B, A, C, A, B etc) on a bit of paper for them to sink in. It does click after repetition though I have always found.
16.
I'm just off to start a new People Who Haven't Bought A Sue Ryder Precision forum ...
and I'll be watching the For Sale forum
17. Lindy fralins £274 a set Yowza http://guitar-xperience.com/onlinestore/in...t&Itemid=38
18. There is a major issue here that perhaps I should have mentioned earlier, Chris. Mrs Clarky She likes my seafoam green Bacchus Jazz more than any bass I have ever owned (and there's been loads!) because of the colour. She has even given it a name which I will not use ("Minty"). I am banned from selling it ever and thus I want to get the most out of it!
19.
Not the Alleva ... tell me this isn't for the Alleva!
The Bacchus! Certainly not the Alleva (which is active and passive)
20. I posted a thread about using a Sansamp to make my Jazz sound more like a Precision - or more precisely to have the capabilities of sounding like a Precision as well as a Jazz http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=120757&hl= One reply suggested swapping out the pickups for Dimarzio Model J's which got me thinking. Which passive (I don't want active) pickup gives a Jazz the most Precision-like authority in a (rock band) live setting, based on your experience, while still being able to sound like a Jazz if needed? Dimarzio Model J or Ultrajazz, Wizard Hammer, S-D Quarter Pounder or otehr (Nordstarnd, Kent Armstrong etc)? And why not have a poll since we all love a good poll? Please don't suggest buying a Precision bass or putting a Precision pick-up in my Jazz! Only interested in Jazz pickup choices
21. Think I recognise that from this rather ignominious FS thread on BassChat! http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=Celinder
22.
Hi Clarky, many moons ago I had a Squier Jazz, and using the BDDI was able to get a nice warm valvey Precision type sound. I think, if memory is correct, I just kept all the settings in the middle, apart from the blend which was on full. And it was through a Trace Elliot amp, so two very clear sounding pieces of musical equipment nicely "Precisioned" by Sansamp.
Thanks Lozz, will give it a try!
23.
If it's the RBI with mid control, I'd say boosting your bass and mids, rolling back the treble a touch, and maybe setting the presence around 2/3 o'clock would be a good start settings wise.
Thanks but I have the bog standard Sansamp DDDI without the mid - will have a try of those settings minus the mid
24. I spotted this and immediately thought of Spoombung but I suspect even he would consider that a curve too far!
