A '63 Precision for me. I love the look of Jazzes but the neck isn't as comfortable for my left hand
-
* SOLD * I have used this for all of my double bass gigs in the past 12 months and it's a real Swiss Army knife of a pedal, with preamp, feedback fighting capabilities, DI/XLR, and a natty inbuilt tuner with silent mute (very helpful for tuning between tracks super-fast). it's like a Fishman Plat Pro but with extra bells and whistles, notably the tuner and more sophisticated EQ options. Selling as I am going back to the simplicity of a Plat Pro and a clip- on tuner. Cheapest online price is £289 at SoundsLive (link below, with specs and stock picture). I will do it for £190 posted. Still in excellent, virtually as-new condition, by the way, as it has always been kept In it's semi-hard case. Did you check your PMs Ben? Afraid I won't be able to pay until Tues/Weds now as I am off early on biz to Germany tomorrow for two days. Was hoping to get payment and delivery arranged today, never mind. Still keen to buy so please have a PM waiting for me by Tuesday evening when I return. Cheers Clarfky

I bought this bass a month ago from Kev Hopper (aka Spoombung), the talented ex-Stump and solo bass (and musical saw) player. I absolutely love the design, which is so far from my usual boring Fender obsession its untrue, and the dead-on 7 lb weight is just fab for someone with a dodgy back like me. The problem is the neck dimensions are very Jazz-like and just not terribly comfortable to me (I prefer a slabby Precision or Wal type neck, especially since I broke my hand in a couple of places 18 months ago and it tends to cramp up with narrow necks). I paid £600 but have since had the broken E string piezo bridge saddle refurbished by Rolf Spuler in Switzerland (I have re-soldered it in and the piezos all now balance perfectly), so I'm bumping up the FS price very slightly to reflect this, to £625. Comes with Affirma hard case (slightly scraped/bashed and missing one of three locks, but perfectly functional). I should be able to post this as I happen to have a cardboard box that fits the hard case like a glove. Here's Kev's original FS ad with loads of pictures and details http://basschat.co.u...ge__hl__affirma Here's a couple of Kev's pics which I am sure he would be cool about me using:

The problem here is Keith and I did a complex trade involving three double basses and cash, which was decided pretty much on the spur of the moment in a car park, and hence we neither have the exact figures put to each instrument on paper! I do think the Baby Bass could be worth as much as £2500 given the condition. However, I will stick to the £2000 figure on condition the instrument is collected in an entirely hassle-free manner from me.

Hi Gwilym, I always try to remember that the internet is open to all to read so I have been deliberately vague about the reasons, other than to mention that there's a group of three people who have known each other for decades and then there's me. Suffice it to say my reasons remain as valid today as yesterday. Its all very sad but onwards and upwards, both for me and separately for Rattlin Bone (who I genuinely believe have the potential to go places still)

I heard back from them asking me to reconsider this morning but my mind is made up.

I got this wonderful example off Mr_Bassman (Keith) for use in my former band due to it's cool retro vibe and feedback-proof playing (there were up to 14 of us on stage and it was very noisy). Although it still retains the slightly dark and relatively quiet sounding original pickup, Keith wedged a Revolution Solo piezo pickup in the bridge assembly which sounds much nicer to my ears. Barring a few very minor surface scrapes and some small abrasions on the back of the neck (which incidentally is very thin front to back, like a Jazz bass rather than a thick old double bass) it is in quite amazing condition. Comes with a cool old velvet lined hard case. I think it's worth considerably more than the £2,000 Keith and I valued it at in our trade but in BC spirit will offer it on at the same price, collected from London. I will miss this incredible looking instrument but the reality is - having just acquired a 19th C German bass and owning a beautiful Kolstein travel bass - I do not need three double basses. One small caveat here - Baby Basses from the 60s are made of some kind of hard plastic (and filled with foam) which over time let's out some kind of harmless odour. It means they have a slightly odd smell, especially if kept locked away in the hard case for any length of time. Not an issue for me, especially if kept on a stand, but best mentioned! Walk on By for me too. My fave Stranglers track and a regular on my IPod journey to work. Great song ( obv by Bacharach), great bass, great guitar solo, it just has everything

Very pretty. So when are you painting it surf green?

Well, my estimation was complete rubbish. With a strap on, it weighs almost exactly 11 pounds. It balances very well and is not neck-heavy - I am guessing because of the heavy cast bridge parts (much of which are hidden from view within the body). I think its balance is why I initially guessed at a lighter weight (I have a recurrent lower back problem and a rotator cuff problem in my left shoulder so I normally can't take a bass of >10 pounds).
