1. Swap around the connections to the outer terminals of the volume pot and see what happens!
 2. Well, I bought a new StingRay for just over a grand and that didn't hurt too much. I take your point though, I wouldn't want to spend so much that I would get upset if it got scratched!! If I buy it, I want to gig it.
 3.
If you have a band leader, or someone who often decides what you play and when, I think that then it would show a lack of critical awareness. A lack of sensitivity to the context, or ability to recognise the context in which one is playing. I wouldn't say it shows a lack of critical awareness if you are a listener, but I reckon that's not what you meant anyway. Mark
Well, that would assume that you heard it in the first place. You really have to give a piece an honest listen to even superficially decide if you like it or not. Of course, there's too much music out there to do that so it's easier to say "I just like bands X, Y and Z". I could say that I don't like Jazz but if I was honest I've never actually listened to any and wouldn't know where to start anyway.
 4. You should get out more I only started playing bass in my old age and I have to say that it has really opened up stuff that I now appreciated. Playing in covers bands, I have had to go off and learn stuff I would never have given the time of day to. Guess what, some of it turned out to be really good. Seriously, each to their own, it's not my place to tell you what to do but I have seen it before, "I won't lower my musical standards to play in a wedding/covers band" etc.. Well fine then, I'll play "Summer of 69", leer at the Bridesmaids, eat all the cake and take their money then
 5.
bass playing recorded on a rubbishy mobile phone - ya moany old git!! andy
I've turned into my dad... "How are you supposed to sing along to that rubbish?". Not my cup of tea I'm afraid all the same.
 6.
heres some of what you missed!.... peace c
I hate to sound like the grumpy old git (well maybe I don't really), but what the hell is that racket supposed to be?
 7. Yes - top bloke. Traded my Yamaha TRB1006 for his G&L Tribute. I drove all the way from Glasgow to Blackpool and back on two cups of cappuccino which seemed like a good idea at the time!! No messing about, bass exactly as described. Very recommended.
 8. Drill the head off and go from there. If it's knackered you'll need to replace the screw anyway.
 9. I can't remember my bloody name sometimes !! I work on the basis that if I can't remember it then I probably didn't know it in the first place. I find that writing the chord chart out helps me. The effort to do that is usually enough to make me remember at least the bare bones and I have the bonus of something to fall back on when it goes out of my head again. I still write the key of each song on the set list though !!
 10.
Hi, I may be shipping an expensive bass from UK to Italy. Anybody got any tips ? Which courier should I use ? how should I package the bass ? Cheers
I'd use it as an excuse to go to Italy and eat good food I've shipped a lot of basses in the UK so I can maybe help with the packing aspect. I've always tried to ship in a hard case (that the bass fits in properly). After that break up some cardboard boxes and wrap and tape up the case paying particular attention to the corners. Don't forget to put all the to and from details inside every layer, just in case. I did once ship in a gig bag. I used LOTS of bubble wrap both inside and outside the gig bag and then heavy plastic sheeting taped around the outside. All went fine. The very cheapest way to send anything is to find a friendly storekeeper who has an account with a courier. Failing that you are at the mercy of the post office or the likes of Mailboxes &c (expensive!!)
 11.
Hi guys I just listening to some symphony X (the early stuff with there ex bassist Tom Miller) and up to now still amazed at the sound tom gets from his gear. I was wondering does anybody know how to get near to that sound? I've heard this growly sound on a meat loaf album aswell (welcome to the neighbourhood). So I get the impression its not just sound for metal/prog rock. Phil
Cynical reply warning..... You get your highly experienced studio engineer to make it sound like that on the recording using expensive digital software. I don't mean to be a miserable git (well no more than usual) but what you are listening to is a hell of a lot more involved that the bass player and "his gear". I'll shut up now.....
 12.
Well I have a tobias Toby Pro 5 string fretless.... There you go.
Not fretless. I do have a fretless and it is quite dusty Thanks anyway!!
 13. Nobody even want to say anything rude about it? Your five string for my six string... you know it makes sense :-)
 14.

Oh Man.... Come on....JOKE...! FFS...!!... Garry
Checks calendar... not April... Hmmm
 15.
Check out the wrong fingering on the Video at about 28 secs. Does this mean that Norman Watt-Roy, Only ever mimed on 'Hit me'.... And it was in fact Carole Kaye on the original...? Click on the second clip on the left..Hit me.. Wont load straight onto this page for some reason. http://video.google.co.uk/videosearch?hl=e...4&ct=title# Garry
I'd be interested in your evidence for the assertion that Carole Kaye played on this track. That's a new one on me.
 16. (Well not really a feeler, for the right deal it's all yours) I did a trade with a nice guy called Kev in Milton Keynes a few months back. I really intended to get into 6 string stuff, but I don't have the time. It's no reflection on the bass at all. Here's a generic picture... (being black and shiny it just looks fingermarked and horrible when I try to take the real one, but I'll keep working on it). It has just had a new set of Rotosounds on it and a new battery compartment as the old one was broken. It has had some use and certainly isn't spotless, but there are no dings or chips, just a bit of buckle rash on the back. It has a good Ritter gig bag - if you don't mind some cat hair that is Everything works perfectly, no issues at all. I'm looking for something I can use. I'd really like a 5 string with wide spacing. I'd definitely consider the old-style TRB5 or a MusicMan 5 of some sort. However, honestly, I'd think about anything (5 or 4 in that order) except a Jazz or copy - I don't understand why anybody thinks two volume controls might be a good idea!! My jobbing bass is a StingRay 4 if that helps. A bit of cash adjustment either way (but not a huge amount from me at the moment) is perfectly possible. I'm in Glasgow and am happy to travel a fair bit and/or meet halfway. Unless it's a deal I can't refuse, I can't really be bothered getting into packing and posting.
 17.
Hi guys, I want to buy some backup fuses for my Mesa 400+ just in case one goes at a gig. Can anyone tell me where to get one from? On the amp it says "8A Slo Blo" but the fuse inside is a "4A Slo Blo". The acutal fuse says "250V BUSSMDL 4A". I am getting quite confused and I popped into Maplin but they didn't have any 4A Slo Blo fuses. Thanks in advance for any help! Jim.
Fuses come in different physical sizes too, typically 20mm or 32mm. 20mm is common, so you probably want this... http://cpc.farnell.com/FF01268 I would go with what it says on the amp any day!
 18.
On a serious note I'm quite a fast player (not stupidly to try to impress at my speed) and I find it very hard to play slow stuff ie anything below 120BPM, is that odd or is it just because of the type of music I usually practice?
It's because you don't practice slow stuff. Playing slow in time is just as hard - if not harder - than playing fast.
 19. I always wondered why left handed instruments existed... after all, both hands are doing lots of stuff. On reflection, I think I've concluded that your picking hand is actually doing the *hard* work. If you go for a right handed bass, you just might be crippling your playing from the start or at least making it harder than it could be. You don't need a big selection of basses... you only need one! Ultimately, it may mean you have to special order something and wait rather than grab it off the rack and it might cost you a bit more, but it's only money
 20. I think notes-played-per-minute is something you get over once past, well, about 16 years old probably!! Unless you have a goatee and those three-quarter baggy shorts of course
 21.
Aye Blob thats exactly what i'm after So you can special order colours? Cool
Well it's in their colour chart, so I don't see why not. Oh and it's Mr. Blob to you
 22.
Im sure, the price is over the top. Ive fallen for the colour tho, i need to find a J bass with that blue tone
You mean this colour... on this instrument... Special order probably, but shiny new.
 23.
Yes, the bass has been repainted, and the damage you see on it has been simulated as part of that process. Refinishing is a common practice, although knocks value off of 'vintage' basses such as this. Relic'ing is the practice of making something look aged and is becoming more and more common after Fender introduced it as an option on their 'Time Machine' series. The refinish here looks good enough but the Relic job is pretty poor.
Indeed - relicing (if there's such a word), sad cynical marketing ploy. You'd get a nice clean one of a similar age for a fraction of that money. AND... why do these people insist on taking them apart - to show what exactly?
 24.
Last one in my trilogy of questions. What kind of bass does Peter Hook use and does he use a pedal to get his distinctive sound? It is the black bass with white bindings
From memory, he uses a Yamaha BB1200 for recordings and that custom Eccleshall (sp?) bass live. I think the sound is down to (a) playing way high and ( some ancient guitar chorus pedal. Happy to be proved utterly wrong!
