1.
'in the pocket' refers to playing tight onto the beat and not straying from it or improvisng. Listen to trad US music and very rarely will you hear the bass player deviate from what the drums are doing. Keeping in tight rythm with the drummer is 'in the pocket'. IIRC
So then, to push my luck to the limits, what's the difference between being "deep" in the pocket as opposed to, one would assume, "shallow" in the pocket?
 2. I keep reading this expression. It used to only seem to appear in American publications but has now crept over here... "his playing is deep in the pocket" etc.. What on earth does it mean? As is traditional I should ask if there are any other bass-related expressions that are utterly baffling?
 3. Mmmm.... Not 100% sure as it doesn't have the "proper" G&L pickups, but... Black and Maple StingRay 4 string, perhaps? Couple of years old excellent condition! Where are you? I think I'd rather swap for the L2500, though
 4. Oliver's Army, Elvis Costello...... or.... almost anything Beatles.
 5. Mmm... Nouvelle Vague at the Fruitmarket in Glasgow. French nonsense :-)
 6. set goals and pursue them. If you want to improve soloing them concentrate on that. Ask here, "how do I learn to solo?". (Don't ask me by the way, soloing is a mystery). IMHO, it's like any complex activity - when you start to flounder start planning and setting goals and objectives. You can get more help here if you are more specific too I would think. Anyway, good luck, we all go through these patches.
 7. Can anybody who knows this Kings of Leon song manage to count their way through the intro? It's a weird syncopated guitar part and a riffy thing on the bass but I just can't pin down where the bar starts and stops. Once the verse comes in it's all dead easy of course. Anybody help? I'd like to write it all down for the band and I'm a bit stuffed.
 8.
I've researched into it an realised that the stock electronics that you get with the default MEC preamp are aimed into preserving battery life. these two chips are basically the amplifiers (opamp) of the preamp, changing them can have a dramatic effect. Since i dont mind switching a battery every three month, the sonic benefit is quite noticeable. (i recycle all my batteries and use rechargeable ones when possible ) Here is what the guys over at MEC had to say: you have to exchange the TL 062 (it is the small one) to a TL 072 and the TL 064 (it is the big one) to a TL 074 and if you do this, the noice goes done from 30 nV to arround 16 nV.. If you ever had any experience with MEC (9v) preamps you'll know that they can get quite noisy, especaly when you dial up the treble. 30 nV to 16nV is half the noise to signal ratio. hope it answers your question.
30nV to 16nV!! nV!!! You know what a nanovolt is? This sounds crazy to me. I'm prepared to be wrong, but you can't hear nanovolts of noise. EDIT: Thinking some more... I'd be even more surprised if the preamp was the noisiest part of the signal chain. I'm really intrigued to find out what happens when you change these chips now
 9.
I bought some replacement mains leads (kettle plug to Euro plug) from Studio Spares - only cost a few quid, and they're a decent length. I don't like the travel adapters, they seem a bit feeble, and I want to know the ground is properly connected..... BB
Agreed... the sort of adaptors they sell for tourists are nowhere near up to the job. Most European sockets are rubbish enough without making it worse. Buy proper plugs and make up some multiblock extension leads with them.
 10.
hey all. Im looking to cutomise and replace some parts in my MEC preamp. the parts im looking for are TL072 and TL074 to replace the TL062 and TL064. Does anyone have any idea where i can find them online? everywhere i look it seems as if i'll have to buy a bulk of them, or spend more than 100£ on an order. I only need one of each. If the internet is not the right place, maybe somewhere around central london? thanks Ito.
My first question is who told you changing those chips would make any difference? Without any accompanying circuit changes to affect (say) the gain etc. you're not going to notice a thing.
 11. When I was in this situation last year, I told them I would play until I was replaced but not for more than 2 months no matter what. I was replaced in a week
 12.

It's a shame he only knows one song
 13.
In the mid 80's I was playing professionally with Les Gray's MUD. In 1986/7 I recorded and appeared on an episode of 3-2-1, playing (well miming and chewing actually!!), yes you guessed it "Tiger Feet". I used to have this on a VHS cassette which my Aunty Marjorie kindly recorded for me, and this had pride of place at the very back of our Video/DVD storage system... kept for posterity and for the kids to see and be greatly amused by their daddy's antics, but not too prominent so that mates could spot it and laugh hysterically!! In 2005 when my life was turned upside down and my marriage came to an end I was "given" huge great piles of cr*p from our 19 years together, but some of my more important stuff strangely disappeared, including my 3-2-1 VHS. I spoke to ITV who own the rights for these shows, and they wanted an 'effin reeediculous sum of money (we're talking hundreds here!!), even though I was a "contributor", to put it on DVD for me. The series has since been re-shown on Challenge TV. If anyone has a copy of this programme (Little Foxes and 5-Star were on the same episode), or can help me get hold of it I promise I will post a clip on youtube with a link here so that you can all share the delight of my totally embarrassing chewing, and an oggle at my wonderful olive ash Mach1 Wal, which I stupidly sold in a moment of complete madness.... Perhaps this could also be the start of a new topic "Really embarrassing footage" or somesuch!!!!
That's not embarrassing!! I saw Mud play Newcastle University back in '84 probably. It was a great night
 14.
People in WMCs up and down the land will be tutting in outrage... I think it's decent pop-rock or whatever you want to call it. It's not something I listened to at the time really.
Wales Millenium Centre? Somehow, I don't think they'd like it either!
 15.
Link please? I can't find it
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OGzwNdTVHJo
 16.
Woah... hold on a second! Sounds like someone's stopped believing. Take that back sir! I'll not stand for any bad-mouthing of the mighty Journey on here or anywhere... As for the bass sound, perhaps you just need to pray to the gods of AOR, so that they might bless you with a bass sound half as astounding as Ross Valory's...
Sigh!! I bet you think Guns N Roses are good too? (Clue: they're not!)
 17.
It's cheating. And I want to drill some holes.
Buy a passive DI box, rip the guts out of it and fit it all in your head. Connect the input in parallel with your effects loop out probably.
 18. I just listened to it on YouTube.... what a dreadful song New strings every 10 minutes? The intro and chorus bits he's playing relatively high and he's quite high in the mix. The guitars are actually quite restrained for this sort of thing.
 19.
No, that will just produce another treble cut with a higher roll-off frequency. To make a passive bass cut, the signal needs to go THROUGH the pot and cap, not to ground via it. You have the cap value correct at .0047uf (ie 1/10th of the value of the normal tone cap), but you need to wire it like this: First, connect the pickup hot connection to the normal (treble cut) tone control middle tag, with the normal tone cap between the anticlockwise tag and the pot casing, exactly as standard. Now connect the same pickup hot/middle tag connection to the clockwise tag on the new bass-cut pot. Connect the bass-cut cap between the clockwise and middle tags of this pot. Then connect the middle tag of this pot to the clockwise tag of the volume pot, and the middle tag of the volume pot to output as normal. None of the connections on the bass-cut pot should be grounded. Obviously the pickup shield (bare wire), the volume pot anticlockwise tag, and the casings of all the pots should be grounded as normal. It must be this way round (pickup > treble-cut > bass-cut > volume) or you will lose almost all the output when you turn down both tone controls. It will still get quite a bit quieter anyway, will passive controls. It doesn't actually matter which way round the connections on the bass-cut pot are, if it's neater to wire it the other way round - as long as you use the middle and clockwise tags. I would also connect the unused tags of both tone controls to the middle tag, as it slightly increases reliability and can reduce noise when turning them, especially the bass-cut.
Quite so.... brain not working :-)
 20. If you are asking, "how do I substitute a pickup with only one output" into a two output circuit.... you are right (I think), but are overthinking a bit. Simply delete the front coil volume and its two connections to the other pot! Your red wire goes to the centre tag (as in the diagram) and the bare (ground) wire is connected to the case of the pot. That's it, everything else is identical. To add a bass (cut) reproduce the existing tone (which is really a treble cut) exactly except the capacitor needs to be 0.0047uF (ish). The existing connection that went to the output jack now goes to the centre tag on the bass cut pot, the cap is soldered between an outer terminal and the case and the case is grounded somewhere handy. Having said all that, have you considered simply buying a pre-wired active circuit? If you are fussy about controlling the tone on your bass it will give you a lot more options.
 21. Do the scale lengths match? It won't have to be much different for it not to internate.
 22. I think I've always been a contrary git - if everybody else wanted to play guitar then I'd want to do something different. I actually played orchestral percussion on and off since I was at school until well into my thirties, so I guess that end of the band had been drilled into me. On top of that a couple of mates played, so it just seemed like a logical thing to try. Addiction and massive financial drain swiftly followed±
 23.
Ha ha this sounds like my lad when he gets his birthday money .... Actually it sounds like me a few years ago The result? Some fixed teeth and my Shuker P5 ... Get a custom, you'll probably never have the spare cash again ...... or pop it in the bank, I hear they are doing really well right now
Yeh - I think that an Icelandic bank will give you the best rate of return at the moment....
 24. Put it in the bank for when that - I MUST HAVE THAT - moment comes along.
 25. Mmm.... Good bits Reasonable ear, get near enough most of the time Enough technique to fool most audiences Good rhythm - used to be a percussionist (not a drummer - oh no) Ok on a fretless as long as I stay at the thin end of the neck Reasonable theory knowledge and getting better Can read the dots at a push Good gear, decent car Loads of practical gigging experience Can solder and fix stuff Always turn up on time Don't drink and can drive a van Reasonably attractive wife to distract from my ugliness Bad bits Not enough technique to fool discerning audiences Can only play fingerstyle. Picks, Slap etc. a mystery Bit stiff and sloppy - cramp up with tricky/repetitive stuff (old age) Old, fat, baldy - your band will not look sexy with me in it. Strictly covers. Soloing and improv completely unknown Can't/Won't sing Can't/Won't dance Don't understand EQ at all - it makes a noise, it'll do!! Can't play guitar - I have no idea what chords you are playing, sorry!! Spectacularly bad memory - if I learned it last week I've forgotten it this
