Marvin Gaye.... Jamerson, Jamerson...in colour
redstriper replied to steve-soar's topic in General Discussion
Jamerson started playing jazz in 1954 and played on many jazz sessions before he joined Motown. His early influences were jazz players like Percy Heath, Ray Brown, and Paul Chambers. This qoute from an interview in 1979 says it all - 'Bass players call from all over, wanting to know what type of equipment I use, what type of bass, what kind of strings-- things like that. I'll tell them, but that's not what's important; it's the feel. The strings don't make the sound, it's the feel. It's all in here, in the heart'. I wonder what he'd make of basschat ! -
Owen is dead cool. I bought a bergantino cab from him and decided it wasn't right for me after a few days. He took it back and gave me a full refund with no hard feelings. Deal with him in confidence.

The Ashdown mag115 deep is under rated and usually relatively cheap used. Ii sounds solid and loud as it comes and if you upgrade it by fitting an eminence kappalite 3015, it will go even louder and deeper.

I know what you mean about the RSs, I also have them on my EBO and I'm not sure they give the best tone, but it might also be the tone of the guitar and I seem to remember them sounding better on my jazz bass about 30 years ago (could be rose tinted glasses though). I've been using GHS medium gauge on the jazz for about 5 years and they sound pretty good to my ears. I'm also curious about Labella Deep Talkin strings which might be up your street too. Hope you get it right first time and don't forget to give them at least a year to settle in. -
How would flats on a jazz/precision sound? If I sold my Spector with little money I could acquire a Squier VM Jazz & Precision (I also want to go back to 4 strings).
I haven't played any Squiers, but they have some good reviews. If they're anything like the old Fenders, they'll be good at dub. I prefer the jazz, but I'm happy with either and heavy gauge flatwounds are a must. I've heard Labella deep talkin strings are very good, though I've yet to try them. I think they are also available nylon wound like the rotosound RS66s. I find new strings take about a year to settle in and really start sounding good after about five years. Good luck with the journey back to bassics.
I adore a smiley face EQ as much as lots of people seem to hate it. I hate the sound of mids, I like a dull, undefined tone, which makes me wonder why on earth I have a Spector and also makes me wonder what bass I should actually be playing. Anyone care to help?
Flatwound strings and a piece of foam under the strings by the bridge, then EQ out all the treble and upper mids and most basses should give you what you're looking for - an Epiphone EB-O will do it on the cheap.
a quick search of 'flite' in the forums shows that a 1x15 sold at the start of february
That's the one I bought and I'd like another if anyone has one they want to sell or trade. They must be the lightest cabs in existance - ideal for my bad back.

tips on how to improve your musical ear
redstriper replied to valentine's topic in Theory and Technique
Don't want to put you off, but I've been trying to do that for 30 years and still can't manage it - I think it's called tone deaf, but don't let it hold you back -
takes all sorts to make a world..........
Kinda depends on the material you're playing I suspect? Me I prefer a barky lower mid tone to a woolly rumble but there are some songs it suits. Les Claypool would hardly sound good with a dub tone (Although he'd sound a lot better than me)
I kinda suspect he'd hardly sound any worse.

Flite cabs are made in the US, very light weight (that's why they're called f....lite). see here I have the 1x15 and I wonder - is anyone else in the UK using them, or am I the only one?
-
I like it extra deep, I don't need treble or middle or bridge pups or tweeters or new strings. Bass means bass Sizzle my arse................

I have a mag115 and I love it, I think it's very underated after comparing it to a few more expensive cabs. I haven't tried the ABM, but this one sounds smooth and deep and it's not too heavy either.
But if you do have an amp with ooomph(tm) few can deny the joy of a big fat old bass sound! Alex
Good point Alex - well made Bottom end is what bass is all about and when I hear twangy hi-fi bassists, it makes me wonder why they play bass at all. I know it's easy to make a bass sound trebley and clever marketing has made it desirable, while deep bass is a greater engineering challenge requiring more power and intelligent design, but there's nothing like the feel of deep fat bass - who feels it knows it.

You're not being paranoid and you shouldn't be ashamed of wanting to look after your hard earned gear. So why not keep the input gain at a level where nothing lights the clip light - then you can chillax and if the gain is a bit low for some basses, so what - different players can use the output level to adjust their volume. Or just tell the ungrateful git with the loud bass to bring his own amp next time

What does adding a 2 x 10 to a 1 x 15 do to the sound?
Sorry if I have opened up a can of worms with my original question. Still not sure to go for a 2 x 10 or 1 x 15
I love the can of worms - it's what makes basschat so interesting. As to the answer to your original question - go for another identical 15 and buy it used so it will keep it's value. Everyone here agrees that is the sensible scientific and cosmetic solution. I got mine from this forum for £60 and there's always one or two on ebay under £100. It's not going to surprise you, because you already know what it sounds like. It will give simply you more of the same and you can leave it at home for small gigs and practises. Now where can I find more worms.......................... -
OK, how many 1x8 or 1x6 w/high pass filtering did you try along with 1x15s w/low pass filtering? When the question posed is whether a top and bottom cab combination have been optimally engineered to acoustically complement each other those options would have to be made available to the consumer. They aren't. The options that are offered are only matched in cosmetics and footprint. Your response is to a different question entirely, that being whether you can run a 2x10 and 1x15 together with an acceptable result. Obviously the answer is yes. Whether it's the best possible sounding option one could only say if you could try the above mentioned 1x8/1x15 or 1x16/1x15 with appropriate crossover, but you can't, so you'll never know. As for Alex's perceived concessions to the conformity game, I'm sure that they will never include a 2x10 to be used with a 1x15, nor a 2x10 with horizontally aligned drivers, nor a 4x10, period. He knows better, and that's more than you can say for the usual sources.
Thanks for the advice, but I can't help think that when you make suggestions for the 'best possible sounding solution', you are not taking into account the differences in subjective tonal requirements. My preference is for 2 separate 15" cabs, although I find a vertical 2x10 used with a 15 works fine too and I use a single 15 or 2x10 for small gigs and practises. It's my personal choice after months of trial and error and it works for me, but I'm not an average player in that I don't like any treble or upper mid range in my sound, just smooth, deep bass. I look forward to trying a 1x8 or 1x6 cab (if can you tell me where to find one) with one of my 15s as you suggest, meanwhile I'll stick to the 2 15 drivers that Alex recommended. If the 1x8 or 1x6 works better than the 2x10 or single 15 as you predict, I will be very happy because it will be a lighter and smaller box. -
