1. Useless comments aside. I'm not a tone chaser in the regard I need/want it to nail the tone 100%. I just need it to be useable and at present the pickups aren't
2. I'm upgrading the pickups on my faker soon. I'm really between official Rickenbacker ones (high gain neck and bridge) and Classic Amplification who hand make them in America and claim to be a more vintage spec. Can anyone vouch for either or help with a comparison between the two? Happy to consider other options as long as they fit within the budget of around £200 a set All help appreciated
3. Would be really interested to hear how they all sound on bass
4. Deffo a pedal train nano, I have 4 boss pedals on mine (look up Hosa for tiny tiny patch cables) and when transporting just fastens to my gig bag and I forget it's there.
5. I use a Little Big Muff on my bass board and te guitarist in my band uses a Bass Big Muff on his. Like someone said, it depends what you want to sound like. Any guitar effect can work on bass some more than others need an EQ with it.
6. Haven't got this new record yet but his first one Coastal Grooves is brilliant and Meldal Johnson is all over it! If you get into him check out his previous incarnation Lightspeed Chamption
7. It is an Aniversary branded bass which sells as Jayro in Japan. By middle I mean the middle position. I lose low end and the pickups don't blend well. I have had it converted to Ric wiring and had all connections re soldered and earth wires done. The bridge pickup is just noisey in general it's not a fault. The neck is more my sort of tone anyway but I sometimes get carried away changing pickups and knobs for certain songs (or parts of) so a p might be good to simplicity. Just trying to get some thoughts on wether I should upgrade these pickups or buy another bass with what would be a decent amount of money for something second hand
8. I have a Ric 4003 copy that I'm always having trouble with. I use the neck most of the time. I loose too much low end in middle (pickups don't blend well) and bridge is noisey and needs replacing. So I was thinking if a set of pickups by Classic Amplifiaction who do spec and highly regarded at that which when factoring in correct treble bezel is just over £200. I'm gonna need to sell off some guitar stuff for this but I'm thinking if I have £200+ in my pocket why don't I buy a used squier (probably a p for simplicity) or add a bit on and buy something new (quite like the VM black/tort jaguar). Any thoughts?
9.
You want rosewood, racing stripe? Try the Mikey Way
Yeah but....silver flake? I'm not in a glam band! Have no issue with the humbucker but couldn't pull off that Finnish
10. Oh stop splitting hairs! Might not be the best use of language but was trying to get across that is I had a thing of 50's, 60's, 70's spec I could still be served very well by the Squier catalogue yet they still can't but together a faithful recreation of a mustang.
11.
As a recent Fender Pawn Shop Mustang owner, I have to agree. I don't think the Squier offerings bring much goodness to the table. Then again, Fender's whole ethos seems to be to flood the market with random options in the hope that some will hit the mark and sell.
Sort of agree with you but I know I can sort of pick a model, a year and a colour and sort of find what I want with Squier without even needing to look at a fender. The mustangs just sort of seem like the weakest link. Would love of of those pawn shop mustangs but more than I have to spend. My biggest mistake was buying a copy of a bass beginning with 'R' that now of course I can't advertise or sell anywhere
12. Why are the Squier mustang basses such a poor desperate tattoo compared to the rest of the Squier range? I played one a while back and the neck felt cheap and the finishes and colour options are uninspiring not to mention maple neck! When the new VM guitars came out there was a unanimous round of applause over how they were so faithful to the models people actually wanted (jazzmasters and stuff) and this is also true of the basses. Why are the mustang so rubbish in comparison? Maple necks (which I usually prefer but isn't spec) and either black/black or 3TS/black. Come on, give us red and a speed stripe or better better still white/tort. Sorry guys, Rant over
13.
The photos from the current Rancid tour have Matt Freeman playing one of his Squires, can't tell whether it's an off the shelf one, or a CS with a Squire decal. I'd like to think it was an off the shelf, but if I'm honest, it probably isn't.
I know nothing about rancid but soooo want one of these. Just perfect spec wise for what I would like and love the look too. To chip in though I think sig models should be based on artists customised ones like Johnny Matt and Billy Corgan rather than just standard instruments in non standard colours (Biffy Clyro). Really respect the folk who are actually using them rather than just doing for the indulgence of a colour sceame......and don't even mention Wentz
14. I have no help to offer. But I was given one of these for free a fee years ago and was by far the nicest bass I had ever head or played (I don't get out much) only it was fretless which I just couldn't come around to. Beautiful bass, if only mine was fretted. But tone, weight, neck everything was perfect....well done, as you were.
15. I had this exact same problem and a compressor was the oerfext answer. Buying a DI for this is like getting one and using it for 10% of what it can do. I use Bass- compressor (for definition and boost)- clean boost (to overdrive)- DI (for final tone shaping and clean sound)- amp
16. Your tone will change massively in the move from rounds to flats as will the tension. More so that a move up or down a gauge on either side of the fence. If your gonna move to flats, get it set up again afterwards. Flats aren't for everyone, I like the description of them but in reality didn't work for me.
17. Digitech bass driver is pretty good, blend keeps low end while level and morph changes the gain. I don't need mine anymore if you fancy it for a steal?
18.
I find Lofi a terrible place. The sound in their small rooms is shocking, especially the ones where the drummer sits in an inshot. Berkeley is by far and above the best rehearsal place in the town. Decent gear, you don`t need to wipe your feet on the way out and Steve and the girls and guys are nice people when they get to know you.
I wish I could go to Berkeley every practice but it's an extra taxi ride from town and we practice twice a week. We always get a good sized room in lofi, I agree the smaller ones are a bit ropey bit we are a five price and prefer to have one of the bigger room for the pianos in there too. I just think it's better of the city centre based places like Dixon.
19. Berkeley is by far the best rehearsal space but isn't that convenient to get to. We rehearse at lofi which for me is a second. Anyone any thoughts?
20.
close enough to the city, the guys at the music centre in Paisley are friendly but in general I find the shops are not so individual as they used to be, probably due to the market being dominated by certain brands and distributors ?? I think that merchant City was closed last time I was out that way.
Merchant city has moved but is still around, look them up online. It's true that most stores are full of the same stuff but for me the service will decide where I go. CCmusic just stock what they can get, pay no attention to trends in music or in instruments or newer lines coming out.
21. Good to hear from you mate. I live near CCmusic but make an effort to not shop there as the customer service is awful as is the stock holding. If I was looking to buy anything it would be Merchant City music as the guys are sound and everything gets a set up before it hits the shelves. I'm only just moving into the gigging world but I know what you mean, there's so many nights on! If I'm going to a gig I prefer smallest venues such as stereo, broadcast or the art school.
22. Really into this as a community and everyone is spot on. Anyone in Glasgow? Where do you shop? Where do you gig? Where do you rehearse? What do you play? Look forward from hearing from you lot
23.
The problem with extreme EQ is
But is it THAT extreme? It's a standard function on some brands and only notch up on one slider of an EQ? I really appreciate your input, this is exactly why I posted it here. I'm struggling to get my heard around firstly why it is seemed to be that extreme when so many players have a EQ pedal and secondly why everything minis this function seems harsh and horrible.
24.
Deep switches OR too much bass is a tone killer... IMO. I think you need to practice with the sound you use live.
Thanks for advice. I really don't have a "live" sound. I have a bedroom sound and then a practice room sound I don't like because it doesn't sound like the bedroom. I'm only just moving into a proper practicing and gigging situation
25.
The beauty of the Ashdown switches (IME) is that you can engage them for home practice at low volume and have a lovely rich tone. When you get in to a full band setting you can turn the switches off, turn the volume up, and have a similar tone that sits nicely in a full band mix.
Sort of my problem is that I can't mirror that tone without that switch and I'm currently looking at pedals such as a Boss Bass EQ and EHX mole to do a similar thing. I play in an instrumental rock band so there's lots of times where my bass is more at the front playing over ambience and stuff so I have to think about more that just how to sit in a mix with everyone else
