Rickenbacker Vs Stingray Vs Warwick
budget bassist replied to jonnyfastfingers's topic in Bass Guitars
if you want a rick-ish sound, a warwick $$ probably wouldn't be the way i'd go.... ricks have a nice mid-honk, something my $$ doesn't really have that much of, at least get something with a 3 band EQ. Also warwicks don't really have "fast" necks... you really want to try before you buy with warwick, seriously. They're nothing like ricks or stingrays (i find both ricks and stingrays absolute pigs to play though, so you may like a 'wick like i do). -
that destroyer is very nice!!

aye but these sterling by musicman basses are worryingly close to the price of a used stingray, of course there will always be people that will want to buy a brand new bass.
Quite! My 'vette was awesome last night. Familiarity and fickleness is my problem. And I like like having new pretties to stare at and play.
Yeah, i'm exactly the same, i can't see myself getting rid of this one now though, unless of course a prettier $$ comes up
I agree completely, but it's bad news IMO. It's just bluring the lines between the Rockbass and the German made stuff...
a little bit yeah.... but they're still nowhere near the quality of the german made 'wicks.
I'd be interested in seeing the prices once everyone has them in stock. The Basscentre now has the Premium 4 string Corvette for £609 (rrp - £780) so that's not too promising. Basicaly the same price as the German ones
I think that's not as bad as it sounds, while £600 is a lot, the standard german corvettes were RRP £900 before they got axed, and this is the premium corvette. The basic will be a fair bit less i would imagine (and the basic is the only one i would buy anyway) Looking at the pricelist now, the corvette basic passive is RRP £497 and £539 for the active. considering no shops actually charge the full RRP, that's not too bad a price for a quality instrument like that, especially with the recent changes and the fact that the german ones were almost twice that for the lowest model. I can't find a price on the RB corvette $$ though, that's annoying.

haha this is very old news but yes, it's true. All the new rockbasses have the warwick W on the headstock instead of that crappy looking rockbass logo, two piece warwick bridges and the necks are 3 piece maple with ekanga veneers. It's about time, the old rockbasses just didn't look very nice to me.

Yeah, that's what i'd reccommend, though the more expensive the gear, the harder it's going to be for you to learn to use it, generally. Kit is getting a lot cheaper though, as all technology does. There are some knowledgable people on SOS, moreso than me. You might want to try gearslutz.com as well, it's a music tech forum more similar to this.

flyfisher - what you're describing is available, it's also VERY expensive.... you're looking at either a digital mixer or what is basically a midi/sound card type thing. Basically you can get cheapish control surfaces for mixing, and you can get cheapish interfaces for inputting audio, but the two combined tend to be pretty expensive, we're talking upwards of a grand for the most basic. You could get a decent USB audio interface for about £100-£200 depending how good you want it to be, most have two mic/line inputs and one instrument or DI input with gain controls on each channel and a stereo return for monitoring, some more expensive ones have more channels, 4, 6 etc. You can't mix on them, but i use one and mix in the box (on software). You can also get separate USB devices which allow you to control certain things inside the software, EG levels, pan, mute, solo etc etc and many other things, a lot of the controls are assignable to different things too, so you can set them up how you want, but it can be complicated. Behringer do a cheap one, but i wouldn't advise anything by behringer. Korg to a very basic micro one for about £50 which might be what you're after. Q1 - nope anything is possible almost Q2 - explained above, you can have both but it can be expensive. Have a look at the alesis multimix mixing consoles, they are analogue mixers with a USB out. Now i know they're compatible with cubase and the like, but i'm not entirely sure how many channels you get out of the desk, whether it splits all of the channels into separate signals or whether you just get 2 (stereo), and i don't know what the return is like either (stereo or 8/16 separate channels). It may be worth going into a specialist shop or the sound on sound forum and asking, as they seem to have some potential for what you want. Q3 - yes indeedy, it's called automation, one of the more marvellous things of modern technology, not having to mix on the fly! Q4 - maybe try and find an evening course or something, the basics can be learned very quickly and can be extremely helpful. I'm sure there are a lot of books out there on the subject, though i couldn't reccommend any in particular. the "X for dummies" series seems to cover about everything else, i'd assume it would have one on home recording

I was getting worried about you, WH, as i'd seen you posting about zons and bolins more than warwicks! What was that about?! It seems that you're still into your warwicks though, so i can forgive you
Thanks dude, they're certainly very special!
you can have my soul in exchange for that SSII.... seriously
-
That's stunning, really interesting too, i love seeing these old 1 piece bridge streamers! Don't think i've seen one with that headstock before though, awesome. That SSII is really pretty too, i'd love to own one like that some day the new ones aren't as pretty IMO
-
love those streamers! that old one is certainly something special!!

A bottle of wine and a box of chocolates Sorry, i'll get my coat!

the service was pretty poor the couple of times i ordered from them online, won't be doing that again.

I would leave it for a bit, it's just going to take longer to heal if you keep trying to play.

Megadeth 'Two Daves are Back Together'
budget bassist replied to Fitzy73's topic in General Discussion
he did have an ok tone (i tried his ashdown overdrive pedal, never did find a usable sound in that thing), but i think ellefson just suits megadeth so much better -

Thank god for that! It just wasn't the same without Ellefson! -
she seemed like a nice enough person tbh and if you'll notice, i've barely even replied to the thread since i wrote it when i first found all this stuff out and i was a bit pissed off, and personally i think a few of the replies, as well as my OP if i'm honest, we're a bit harsh on her. thats also the reason i didn't mention where the gig was at, i know there are a few nottingham based basschatters and i didn't want people to go along or blame the venue or even blame her, i'm sure its as much about bad luck as it is about bad organising really. its not about her at all, its more just how badly the gig has been organised that i'm moaning about, and the fact she wanted us to play even though we're all under 18, and the whole drumkit thing. i don't know about the family friendly thing since its an 18+ gig, that doesn't really sound family friendly at all. it didn't sound like it was her first gig, because i'm sure she's said the place have moaned at her for having under 18s play there before. either way, its still a badly organised gig that i ended up annoyed about. also - i didn't know it was a charity gig if i'm honest, but i can't see how that makes a difference anyway. we we're getting paid, but i didn't mention that because she told me before we agreed to play we weren't getting paid. i never once thought she was trying to rip anyone off, like i said she seemed a nice enough person, and i only found out about her gig because she was a friend of a very close friend of mine. i don't think she was even using us for the drums really, maybe that was why she wanted us to play even after she found out we were under 18, but we had sorted out the fact we were playing at least a week before she asked if we could bring drums - its not like she said "you can play if you can bring drums". i just think its amazing about how unorganised the gig was, and how none of the other bands can bring drums. we don't have a problem with lending the drum kit out - we've done it before, and if my dad hadn't had a gig that night, we'd have lent it out again at this gig - but we simply couldn't bring the kit, and i didn't want to trust a total stranger with our drumkit. she also definatly knew we shouldnt be playing and still insisted that we should. i forgot in the OP that i i dod ask her if it was worth calling the venue and checking, but she said that would just make it worse (i know a couple of people posted in the thread i should have called - it did go through my mind). its not even like we are all 18 except me, in which case i'd have probably gone for it because i doubt they're going to ask the band for ID and if theres a 17 year old with a group o 18 year olds, no one's going to notice. but i'm the oldest, and the others are 15 and 14. they're going to pick up on that, and she must've known it too. she knew we shouldn't be playing and refused to check with the venue if its ok that we're playing, and yet by then i believe she probably was just using us for the drumkit. anyway, we've dropped out of the gig now. i hope it goes well for her and everything, but i didn't want to risk having our drumkit nicked, or risk setting up the drumkit then getting kicked out, risk going to all that effort to be told we can't play or anything like that. my rant may have been a little harsh, but i still stand by it.
Nah, i understand why you were a bit cautious, you're right though, the organisation was piss poor, and the hucknall bands that she booked didn't help matters, i've played with/watched most of them play before and as a generalisation, most of them couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery, let alone organise a gig date to which they can all turn up to and then actually turn up on time on the night, a lot of them don't even have their own equipment, and that's before i get to the music... honestly, organising a gig in hucknall is an absolute nightmare. And yeah, it's for charity, her and some people from college are going to ghana to help build houses or schools or something? I didn't know she'd organised anything before, either way, she hasn't done it much... as for the 18's thing, I think she intended it to be for all ages and then realised that it's in a pub so she couldn't (some of the pubs round here are ok with it, some aren't. Personally i got fed up of all the U18's turning up at the gigs and just behaving like what they are - children. I don't mean you luke, you're alright, but just some of the under 18 regulars just acted like prats until eventually any adults that would pay to get in stopped turning up and they just became children's parties... not good. but i digress. She's organising another one in april, she did say to me that this one was just to "test the water" and wasn't going to be all that important, though i may have to help her out a little on the next one... she does mean well.
Right on. Good to hear, I hope you understand that my comments on this are strictly business related. (looking out for a fellow bass player). I hate to see people having dreadful gig experiences, I have had so many I wouldn't even know where to begin! I was hoping to help him avoid some of what I have been through in the past. Especially when I was his age. I believe you when you say she is nice. According to the OP it is not her first booked gig, I only went off the info provided. Sorry if I offended you about your friend. Best wishes, Craig
No worries, i only read the first post I'm not sure if it's her first one or not, but i know she definitely doesn't have much experience in it. Aside from that, i can't really comment, but she does mean well. I'm not sure if luke mentioned it - but it is a charity gig and she's not out to rip anyone off or screw anyone over...
Is this gig by any chance a charity gig at the plough in hucknall?
Yep it is I've known this girl all my life (literally), she's nice and this is her first time organising a gig so she deserves to be cut some slack, and in fairness she has had some trouble with bands dopping out etc, not sure what the deal about it being over 18's only is though, she asked me if i could get something together for it and for it to be "family friendly".... She only asked me a couple of weeks ago though, obviously i couldn't get anything together in that short a time frame. You can trust her to get someone to pick the kit up though, she's trustworthy.
