I was just looking at the Sade vid a minute ago and thinking that's a great tone. Haven't heard the song since before I played bass, so never realised it was a 'Ray. I can listen to the whole album again with a new perspective.

Not REALLY sure why I started this thread. It was a kind of portmanteau of several classic threads of the past few weeks.

I've heard tales of folk filing down the frets until just the metal tang remains within the slot, flush with the fretboard surface, then applying several coats of a suitable varnish. Can't remember where I heard this or how successful it was though.

...if you walked into a bass dealership after selling your Rickenbacker and found an £11,000 Fodera propped up against and amp (with a smiley face EQ) next to a music stand?

Another good 'in' if you are a reader is the amateur dramatics route. Pantos, musicals and stuff. Usually two or three pro players in the pit who are well connected to The Matrix of the local music scene. Just remember to bring your own music stand *ducks* a pencil and a battery powered stand light. Theatre gigs have been my only source of paid musical income for 20 years and it's a right old laugh.

Love my Stingray. Finally got the 'Nard tone nailed. Took me 15 years and three different 'Rays to realise that it's all in the fingers!

A girl approached me at a gig once and asked what the big black box was behind me, meaning my old Trace 410 combo. I explained it was the amplifier and speaker where the sound comes from. "Oh" said she "I thought the sound came out of them black things" as she pointed to the pickups.

I have the two wheeled one also and it's fantastic. It also doubles as a combo stand as I discovered at rehearsal last night. The hard floor in the big hall makes the amp very boomy and unfocused when flat on the concrete, so much so that I was considering a new combo. But now, my Stingray sounds like a Stingray. Great video. Should be noted that there is a great chunk of foam under the strings too. May be tempted to convert to flats when I next change my strings in about 3 years! How do flats affect neck tension vs same gauge rounds? Am I right in remembering that TI flats are fairly gentle on the neck and fairly loose?
