2.
he has a point though
maybe he's missed the point of the thread?
  3.
None of us have done this have we? So why not stop wasting time talking bollocks and do some practice, go out and gig and sound like the bollocks ?
geeeeeez louise, take a chill pill it's all opinion. I'd never be so blindly arrogant or ignorant to say i was better than a bass player who has made a bloody good living from being a bloody good bass player over 20+ years. as has been said before...i thought the purpose of this thread was to talk bollocks about bass players that we reckon are over rated?
  4.
Hmm, whose is this then? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ju1RaX9Vkho
5.
how so? in comparisson to some of the other bassists mentioned?
to be fair a lot of the players mention on this thread do over complicate things to a certain extent *but you have to take into consideration the context in which they are playing; i.e. a solo player is gonna play differently compaired to someong playing within a band set up*. regardless, i actually really enjoy the over complicated bass lines that flea comes out with as their great fun to play/listen to/watch. flea is definitely a bass icon for the masses but being rated Bass Guitar magazine's bass player of the year 4 years in a row or something crazy in the 90's is another example of how over rated he is. Edit: might have been bass player magazine?
  6.
he doesnt overcomplicate thing
????? yeah he does flea is a great player man and he definitely doesnt blow his own trumpet, and i grew up listening to the chilis and everything up to and including Californication was great and really helped me to learn the bass, but... he's still over rated even if he doesnt shout about being good.
  7.
I say Flea is over-rated because way too many bassists say he's the best thing ever - he gets a lot of recognition for being in a famous band and for slapping ostentatiously... I think he's great, but I think the average opinion of him is higher than it should be
+1 on this deffo. Flea is an amazing player but he does get far more praise because he's in a mahousive band. No one would know him if the Chili's didnt happen and he was still playing cheese funk rock in dirty Hollywood strip bars.

    Pedalboards

Due to persistent impulse buying (is there any other why of buying stuff??!?) I've just bought one of those XL Spider cases, I should have it by Tuesday. If anyone's interested I'll post a little review on it once I've used it a bit.

  14. Those Marleaux Signature basses look incredible but unfortunally very likely to be out of my price rage by about 2 or 3 times what I could stretch to...damn. Interested in the Godlyke Deity fretless 4, any idea of asking price and pictures?
  15. Dude…as other have said; I am AMAZED this is still here. This is a lot of amp for £300 here.
lovely, such a shame that stingray just aint sellin at the moment, coz thats gorgeous
+ a million It's exactly the same as mine which didn't sell so I'm holding onto it, not bad for a 2nd back up
  21.
The original query asks who 'you' think is over-rated... surely if you list a bassist that you don't like, that then means that they can't be over-rated. You don't rate them at all, hence they can not by definition be over-rated by you
ahh...the refreshing voice of reason
  22.
for me nothing beats good old fashioned playing
True. I think I appreciate it on a “man, I wish I could do that” kind of level cos it’s technically amazing and a good bit of ear candy, and I think the double slap techniques are well impressive and sound great. Saying this, I can also appreciate a simple groove that’s perfectly played with the perfect feel – there’s a lot to be said for not over complicating things. I almost find it shocking that Victor Wooten has been mentioned quite a few times yet Marcus Miller has not? Is it because he has his own signature Jazz? Both amazing players in their own right, and both 'over use' their individual technique or might be called "one trick ponies". In my mind this doesn't detract from their musicianship or make their music any less enjoyable to listen to.
  23.
for the reasons that have already been said in the first page of this thread sure, he can play fast, but to my ears, most double slap sounds pretty, well, rubbish...
not exactly well argued points, but whilst I don't agree with you on the double slap thing being "rubbish" (as it is incredibly skilful - can you do it?), i subscribe to Oscar South's views that he is an amazing musician and his arrangements are incredible. Slapping aside, if you haven’t watched or heard him playing Norwegian Wood then check it out. Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9a4ThBNacY - that was at Bass Day '98
  24.
victor wooten
how is he over rated? explain...
