They're £200 cheaper at Coda Music than the Bass Centre. I'm very tempted! http://www.coda-music.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=27_128

I picked up my Gallien Krueger 1001RB-II and Neo 212 for less than £1000 (via Soundslive.co.uk and Thomann.de). Highly recommended. Very portable, very loud (700w), and a fantastic sound. You could even go for the 700RB-II and a couple of Neo 112s if you wanted even more portability, still kicks out 480w, with the advantage of only using one cab for 320w whenever needed. Wish that's what I'd done now, not that I'm unhappy with the bigger version, just I don't drive so rely on other people to cart my gear around.

I've got a 1001RB-II and Neo212. Can't fault them, and I'll never play anything else now. Spent some time in the studio recently and the producer commented on how good it sounded. The cab is easy to shift on your own, is very loud, and crystal clear. Buy one now!

Found this '1960 vintage reissue' - http://www.grouseguitars.com.au/sold/fenderjazzwhitejap.htm. I see the strap pin on the headstock there. Mine originally had a white scratchplate, and there's more written on the headstock there, so it can't be one of those. But it's entirely possible it is a reissue, I don't know a lot about it.

I've had this mid-80s Japanese Fender Jazz for quite a while now, but rarely gets played because it's in pretty bad condition, so I'm going to get it sorted and start gigging with it again. If this was your bass, what would you do to it to fix it up, and how much do you think it's worth now, and after the work? Serial number E968125. The reason I'm asking what you think it's worth, is because I don't want to spend more on it fixing it up than it's worth in the first place! Here are the problems... The original pickups have been replaced with 'Select by EMG's (although they sound pretty good!) The paint is cracked on all edges, with plenty of dents. It's clearly been dropped at some point (or thrown judging by the damage!?), as there's a crack at the headstock (only small, and has been fixed), and at the neck joint (not fixed, doesn't appear to be any problem). Pretty bad buckle rash on the back, which was originally covered with green felt. I took that off, but the paint was quite flakey on the edges, so I've covered it with gaffer tape just to stop it getting any worse. The headstock is in pretty bad shape - dents and knocks all over it, and a decent sized gouge along the bottom edge (what used to be in that screw hole by the way?). The machineheads work, but have seen better days. The E string peg isn't quite 90° to the headstock, it's bent slightly forward and doesn't stay in tune as well as the others. The neck has a few grooves along the top edge, and plenty of dents and scratches along the back. But the fretboard is in decent nick, with only two noticable marks, above the 12th fret, possibly where the strings have banged into the neck during a drop. However, the frets themselves are in pretty bad shape. Some of them are very badly worn, mostly around the first five frets. The end strap pin is loose, and it's been threaded, so can't be tightened. The original white scratchplate was pretty dirty and scratched, but was replaced with the tort one by the previous owner. I don't want to get rid of it, because it's very light, comfortable to play, and has plenty of mojo! but I do want it to be playable. I've got my Mex Active Deluxe for recording, and this will mostly be used for gigs. I'll be taking it to my local reputable music shop next weekend, asking them to sort the frets (I expect to need a complete refret), fix the strap pin, and give it a good setup. But what else should I do? Should I replace the machineheads, or keep them original, should I get some better pickups, etc? The bridge, controls, etc, all appear to be fine, and I know it was never going to keep it's value like a US Fender, but I think I'd prefer to keep it as original as possible all the same. Besides, a shiny new Bad Ass would look out of place on the battered body, so all suggestions welcome, but I probably won't be doing anything too extreme to it!

You'll be wanting a biography (pad it out as much as possible, big yourselves up as they say!), a gigs list, a photo and a demo. The bio should mention any positive reviews, or even just comments from reputable sources, like a local promoter. Hope that helps!
Hi Russ, I need a new compressor and wondered about buying a half rack unit (Presonus Blue Max) to mount on the right of my rack unit (see above) cos I'm pretty sure it won't reach the fan but are you sure that a half width space is enough not to cause problems?
Definitely. If I recall, there's a very slight overlap, but only of the grate, not the fan itself. I never had any problems with it, even considering getting another AKG and rack-mounting again.

Yeah that's River Phoenix, not Johnny Depp.
Heres my new rig, same head GK1001RB II I've had this now for around a year and am very happy with it. Mounted in a 4U flightcase which Im planning on sticking in a compressor at some point. And the new cab (cheers Alan) and Epifani UL310
Not considered rack mounting your AKG? I used to have one, I mounted it on the right hand side, and didn't cause any problems with the fan on the GK.

I'm a Jazz man, but the sunburst/tort look really doesn't do it for me! Gimme a Geddy or '75 anyday!

I use a GK 212. Ive had it for a year and still just this weekend a bassist came up to me after we'd played to compliment me on how punchy my tone was. A nice small cab that handles 600w and is very easy to carry into venues without needing help. Highly recommended! My photos aren't particualrly good, so here's a pic of the 1001RB combo if you're considering one!

I played a Peavey Max 158 yesterday. Only with a passive 4 string, but it had a hell of a lot more volume and tone than the other practice amps I tried. Well worth a go. I'll be getting one as soon as I've got the cash! http://www.gear4music.com/Peavey_MAX_158_Bass_Combo_Amp

Thanks very much!! Our new material is much mellower than TFM, Signals and Resilience are the heaviest we go. We're recording a couple of the mellow songs (with much more interesting bass lines!) in August, so I'll get those uploaded as soon as they're done!

My band The Wait has been in the studio, and recorded a single. www.myspace.com/thewaitbanduk Signals is the main song. Nothing really stand-out on the bass there, but it does suit the song nicely. Resilience is the first b-side. Again, nothing complex here either, but a decent song. Playback is the second b-side. My favourite of the three. Nothing stand-out (again!), but the tone is great when the bass is on it's own in the verses. With decent speakers, you can pick out the punchy tone from my GK rig, and the DI'd tone from my active Jazz. Shame we recorded the three songs where I don't play anything particularly standout, but they do rock pretty hard!! Opinions appreciated!

Think my GK 1001RB-II covers all points there, except no tuner-out on the back, just the front.
How much did the GK Rig set you back? A huge fan of GK myself and I intend to get a stack off them.
I'd recommend it! The head was £499 from Sounds Live, and I think the cab was £470 from Thomann. Small, light, but sounds absolutely massive for it's size.

GK 1001RB-II, GK Neo212, Fender Deluxe Active Jazz, Fender mid-80s Jazz. Doubt I'll ever use anything other than GK now, this rig sounds perfect. Even tempted to get a 400RB for practice.

Fender Jazz. Previously owned Ibanez, Warwick, Fender P, Spector and *cough* Shine, but always gone back to the Jazz, so now that's all I own. Mex Deluxe Active and Jap mid-80s.

Started gigging regularly again, so here's me on Monday with my Deluxe Active Jazz.
