1. Not really... I ended up getting an OLPMM32 instead of a proper stingray based on recommendations from either here or talkbass (can't remember now), and when I decided I didn't need get on with the narrow spacing of the 5er, I swapped it with Jobiebass on here for his Fretless Jazz. Probably saved a fortune compared to what I'd have spent if I'd just had local music shops to base my purchases on. Although the old Dod FX25 I got was a bit extravagantly priced... but I'm blaming that one on talkbass rather than here.
  2.
Started off with violin at primary school
Me too.... never really got that far with it because I wasn't particularly into music back then... it was just a convenient way of skipping a few classes here and there! A few years later on, my folks were running a scrapyard and at some point in the late 80s the portakabin that the boys used as a tea hut got lined with several layers of old crusty carpet.. and the lorry driver's blues/rock band started using it for practice and rehearsals on weekends and evenings. I used to go out there on summer evenings and sit on top of a 3-high stack of cars and listen in. I got a few drum lessons at school after that, but soon realised that carrying around a whole drum kit would be a right pain in the arse, so started getting guitar lessons with one of the guitarists from the blues band. Messed around with a couple of bands doing a fairly mediocre rock/metal kinda thing but it never went anywhere and gradually fizzled out. At some point, my folks picked up a really sh*tty SG copy bass for £20 at a car boot sale, but I couldn't set it up to anywhere near playable, so I stuck with the guitar pretty much exclusively. I still kept practicing and at one point had myself convinced that I was almost quite good. Then I went off to uni and pretty much forgot about playing... none of my social circle were into playing anything, and those that were into music were evolving their tastes more into hip-hop and dance music, because that's what tended to be on in the more fun places to go out drinking where we were. My musical interests inevitably followed suit somewhat, although I still listened to a fair bit of rock / blues / metal, and still picked up the guitar once in a blue moon... but found it increasingly frustrating cos I was always having to relearn stuff to get back to where I was rather than really progressing any. After uni I decided to try my hand at DJing, reasoning that my musical background thus far would make it fairly easy to pick up and get good at... it hasn't quite worked out as simple as that, but I'm still sticking with it and enjoying learning it.... but I was also finding that there was lots and lots of dance music out there that I kinda liked, but couldn't really get into cos it was so mind numbingly repetitive.... and thinking "I could do better than that.... surely...." Am now trying to get my head round cubase and all manner of other technological stuff, but one of the things I wanted to do was to create more organic sounding basslines.... so I now I've got an OLP twin pup ray-a-like and a fretless MIM Jazz to try and get my head round as well! No doubt I'd be better off just trying to concentrate on getting good at one thing at a time, but I never was one for the sensible approach.
  3.
its either a stingray 5 or the Wal i think, thats what it was narrowed down to in another thread
Umm... I think it was this thread, wasn't it?
  4. 2 soundcards arrived in good condition and in good time. Nice one fella, cheers!
  5. Hiya - got any of these left still? How about a price for two, including postage? Paypal OK? Cheers, stoo
  6. Am currently re-organising some stuff in my itunes folder, so daren't listen to anything from the computer in case my poxy external hard disc decides to randomly delete stuff again, as it does anytime I try and do more than one thing at once from it. So I'm listening to a minidisc of a DJ set I did a few years ago. Mostly breakbeat stuff - just gone from Stereo 8 - Get Above Yourself to Seconds Out by the Autobots. Can't remember where it's headed next but I'm loving it at the mo'. Before that, I was listening to a mix of Smashing Pumpkins, AC/DC, RATM, Howlin' Wolf, Wildhearts, Isley Brothers and some Hendrix.

  8.
I like MM's but that one doesn't float my boat.
Ditto - not keen on the figuring or the colour or the edging on the body. The 12th fret inlay looks a bit gash as well, but then I suppose I rarely get enthusiastic about the look of fingerboards that aren't maple. Don't mind the lack of a scratchplate, but if I was gonna have an expensive bass with a large expanse of look-at-me finish.... it wouldn't be that finish.
  9. Not really cos the tapered edge will taper the wrong way, leaving a sharp edge to catch your fingers on. I suppose you might be able to reshape the edge a bit, but then if you were going to do that you're probably just as well making yourself a whole pickguard from a blank...

  11.
You can pick up a new Line6 Lowdown 110 for around £150, and secondhand ones pop up in the for sale forum here! An excellent practice amp, and really small (12" x 12" x 12") I'm very impressed with mine. Hamster
+1 Can't fault mine - sounds very impressive for such a tiny bit of kit. It's handy that it's got an mp3 player input too - sound quality's decent enough to use instead of a regular stereo if cost cutting is the order of the day.
  12. Was it the Beautiful South that did "Don't marry her, f**k me"? That seems like a safe bet to avoid at a wedding gig.

    OLP
Ahh…so OLP f***ed it up for themselves, unlucky. If OLP have got their act together then why pull the licence now?
Seems odd, eh? If they'd already started making arrangements for another company to take over OLP's role then I could understand it, but then it's dragging out a bit if they're still not at the point where they're confident enough to go public about it.

    OLP
Apparently the later OLPs (MM22/32) were great, but it was too late by this point. I think it was Sterling Ball who said this..

From what I can gather, the older OLPs vary wildly on quality so you might get a blinder or might get a lemon. To quote Sterling Ball....
Regarding OLP quality it was all over the board much to my disapointment...(why do you think I cancelled the deal?) The irony is that the last batch were made in Korea at a higher price point due to the sub leaving the markiet and they were truly great....to good but too late.....
http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-...html#post485243
OLP
What’s happened with OLP? Were EB not happy with the quality of the products they’ve been producing? I must have had my head up my arse recently cos I’ve not heard about this yet. Excuse me if there’s another thread about this…
Thats pretty much it. EB thought the earlier OLPs were too inconsistent on quality and so cancelled the licensing deal. Some alternative arrangement is in the offing, but haven't yet heard much as to indicate who or when...

    OLP
Do they have plans to start another lower cost range to replace the OLPs? (or to change to a different manufacturer?)
Yep - their plan is to start over with a new manufacturer, but they don't seem to be in too much of a rush.

  18.
Am i the only one that finds fender basses hideous with painted headstocks? Same with most musicman basses too.
Nope - same here. Maple necks and headstocks should be left naked. I don't even really like the look of rosewood boards on them, although I've accepted the compromise on my OLP MM22 cos of the huge price difference. Colour matched headstocks just always seem to look massively naff to me.
  19.
Your right, I could lower the neck pup right down, but then it'd make no sence in having it there in the first place cause you wouldnt get a nice tone out of it or hear it.
Yeah - I wasn't really suggesting that as a remedy. Just mentioned it to point out that it seems to be fairly easy to adjust your technique so that having the neck pickup there isn't a problem. So easy in fact that I managed it without even consciously trying to - I was just practicing as normal but with the neck pup lowered right down. At the time I was considering either removing the pickup or relocating it closer to the bridge cos I was also convinced there was no way I'd be able to adjust my playing enough for it to no longer be a problem where it was.
  20.
Afternoon, I JUST (this week) got a HS bongo in gold from this forum, I never played a bongo before and I got some real Gas, Its a lovely bass but I cant get on with the Neck Pickup, Gets in the way for slap (I dont have a good technique) Trade only, I want another bongo, but a single humbucker. Might trade for something like a sadowsky 4-5 ( + extra cash Obviously) but would MUCH prefer a Bongo 5H (not interested in a 4 string Bongo) Edit: Im a Maple fretboard fan Original Basschat for sale thread with pics
Blimey - you've been going a bit GAS crazy since we traded, eh? Your Jazz hasn't seen much use since I got it (in the middle of building works so only have space for one bass out at a time just now) but I have been quite pleasantly surprised how little the neck pickup bothers me on my OLP 4HH now... I started off hating it for slap stuff, and lowered the neck pickup right down until it was pretty much flush with the pickguard. After a month or so I put it back to normal height and... somewhat oddly - it doesn't get in the way anymore. I can't really work out exactly what I'm doing different - although I guess I must be playing a bit further up the fretboard when slapping... but I reckon it could be well worth sticking with it for a bit to see if you can get on with it.. it'd be a shame to lose that extra bit of versatility for the sake of a bit of effort working on technique. (And it must be piss easy if I can do it. )

  22.
Hi Jack, have they arrived? Do the front and back zip flap things come right off or just fold up and velcro in position? And could I stack my percussion box on top of the rackbag on top of my cabs? The top looks a bit too lumpy to put things on (and expect them to stay there )
It's fold up and velcro. I would have thought it'd be ok to stack stuff on top of it while it's closed, but probably not while its open. Unless you put your rack stuff in upside down, and fold the flaps underneath the rockbag, leaving a flatter surface on top. ??
  23. Nightmare. I paid £25 for a 4U Rockbag a couple of months ago. I was robbed!
