1. Cheers chaps. Jay, when you have time if you could PM me that luthier's number it would be awesome. Thanks in advance. And yes I agree it's a dilemma, but it could be useful for little fun gigs, open air things, parties, etc If it's within the £300 ballpark I guess it is still ok.
2. Hi, I just took home a cheapo bass from a home where it was no longer wanted or needed. It was used for school and nobody there knew there was something wrong with it. My idea was to leave my good bass home on the, what shall we call them, less "humane" gigs... It's a ply, but only 5-6 years old: a Hofner. The body is fine, BUT, it has the worst case of saggy (a.k.a. concave, buckled) neck I've ever seen in the flesh. The action between 2nd/3rd position and thumb position is unplayable and the action at the end of the fingerboard is far too low! Neck reset, or something cheaper, or skip? Or else? It's not my main bass and I didn't pay for it, so I'm not too fussed, but can I save it? How? At what cost? and Where? (I'm in Scotland). Any help appreciated. PS, the photos are the best I can do, but the description of saggy should suffice... And no I can't manage to rotate the photos so they are easier to see somehow...sorry
3. Thank you. There's also really no catch; I just genuinely need the space and I can use the money for double bass gear or studio time. My feedback is there to prove it.
4. £600 for today only then the price goes back up where it belongs and there it stays as I found a place to store it out of the way until it sells.
5. I need this gone, so £600 this weekend only. Look up the reviews on the internet. Also called lb-30 15h (looks like the same to me). Only price I can find is ex display "gear for music one at £1400 and a RRP in $ of $2670!! Depending on where you are located we can chat about postage: It's a buyer's market, but I'm not Santa. Thanks.
6. 48 hrs bump, lots of amps for sale just now!
7. I take it your bass sounds even acoustically? (Edit: sorry, you said above it is) And I assume the Shadow is the "underwood" looking wing type? Lots of people use the Realist so if it just doesn't suit your bass, I'd say abandon ship. I've never had it on my bass, but I used to have an Eminence and it sounded champion on that. There's no point altering the bridge to suit the Realist unless you will then use it forevermore. And it may not work. In that case, if you wanted to just have a "truer" sound but not too expensive you could go down the route of Ehrlund. Schertler is much better but more expensive. Remic is brilliant. I have the studio version. I know they make a live version which is apparently much more resistant to feedback and trades off a bit on sound. If you play at extreme volumes however you'd just have to put up with the unnatural sound and stick to underwood-types or get the dreaded mag pickup.
8. These are great! I foolishly sold mine and regretted it. If money wasn't an issue, I'd buy one again immediately. GLWTS.
9. Bump for the lush tone of valves and the cool look of flip tops...
10. Thank you Geoff, I will indeed take your advice and I therefore changed the heading of the thread. Thanks again
11. He he, so...probably fair to say that Jay is not in the market for a 1/2 size bass...or a wee coffin... Still, as everyone said, get a 3/4. Peace.
12. Pm sent for info thanks
13. Couple of people asked for the head only: if I split, would I be left with a weird looking cab with a lid or do people reckon I may be able to sell it? Frankly I'd prefer to shift the whole unit at one time so fingers crossed someone soon is lookong for awesome valve tone in one cool package... I take Double basses and related stuff as part exchange...
14. Bump for final price cut. £650 is a very good price. Posted to he UK: bargain! This thing retailed for $2670 according to the only bass magazine review I could find...
15.
My SWL is 20Kg..... even with the castors there’s the car in/out lift. Thanks GLWTS
Sure thing. It's surprisingly manageable but still not the amp you'd be wanting to run around the festival field with.
16.
Ok, I have to ask, what does the beastie weigh?
30kg. It has really good wheels.
17.
I use a QSC K10 and it's great , I actually prefer it to a bass amp when using a pick up too, I set up the the qsc alongside a mackie srm450 a while ago and I was suprised how much better the qsc sounded ,way more detailed refined and focused Btw those remics look the business I might have to get one
Thank you very much mate, yeah, I'll go for one of them or the K8 as soon as I manage to sell my flip top combo (I'm so surprised about how hard I'm finding it to sell that even at super low price). Yeah the Remic is amazing in my experience so far although being in a sort of live sabbatical at the moment, I have not really tested it on difficult stages yet. I got one of them endorsing deals and I am so very glad about it, top quality sound and so much easier to install than all the other mics. I'm quite confident it will be perfect for the acoustic/jazz situations I will be going out with in the new year.
18. weekend bump. £680...Or trade for Double bass related pro gear.
19. Nigel, you are welcome to come up any time you like, always nice to meet other players. The Sansamp and underwood are the devils I've been running from, although I loved the underwood in my times of loud slapping gigs (oh the youth!). The PB300 I heard great things about but at 16.5kg and 6 speakers is a bit big for my purposes. By the way you lot of Basschatters are a great helpful bunch, thank you
20. Thank so guys, I think I'll go for that then. Jay, spot on I want to keep my current gear not replacing it. I have had a clear out a few months ago to coincide with a period with no gigs to attend to some family issues. Now I'm preparing to beget out there again so I'm basically starting with a clean-ish slate (keeping my mic and preamp and looking to get a speaker)
21. I had a crazy 8 and I'm sure it was great but at the time I had an Aguilar head, then a Markbass and Genz Benz and I wasn't too pleased. It's not that it sounded bad, it just didn't sound natural to my ears. Ears have got minds of their own of course. I think te biggest hurdle was switching to a mic. Now I have a Remic microphone which I am happy with but I was very happy with a Schertler too, just a bit fiddly to move between basses. Unfortunately the mic needs xlr input and 48v phantom, and only some Acoustic Image amps can do that. As much as that is certainly an option, the prices are what they are. I already have a good preamp option, so I was wondering if I could just use that and plug into a powered speaker. Disclaimer: there is no need for me to sound purer than snow of course...but struggling against a bad sound at gigs makes the whole experience unpleasant, we all know that. Af course, the gig-goer will be none the wiser, but thats not the point: we're at an age of self-indulgence (on a budget).
22.
Would this ... Barefaced FR800 ... Wee bit dear.... ... be overkill..?
Wee bit on the dear side, but I'm sure it's magnigicent!
23. Thanks guys, K8 sounds even better to my back. What do you use now bassace? Thank as well Alex.
24. Hi guys I have seen a couple of old threads on this so I would like a quick contemporary recap. I have had a constant bee in my bonnet about the amplified sound of my double bass. A while ago I gave up on pickups and I use a mic (this journey is for another thread). I have a preamp system I like but I still need a volume-maker for small/medium gigs and stage monitoring on larger ones. The bands are jazz/acoustic based and never loud. I have tried basically every kind of amp from stacks beasts in my louder days to the little dinky D class ones. I have also tried some powered speakers but they were cheap and rubbish. The mic and preamp give me the sound mirroring I need, so I don't need more knobs to twiddle (I don't like knobs!). Hence, what powered speaker would amplify this with good quality, enough for small/medium and/or stage monitoring? I have read QSC K10 are good. Worth splashing out on? Anything else around? Thank you v much.
