1. As many people, I have made the decision that I'm tired of carrying around big heavy gear between home and car, car and venue and back again. I made the leap with respect to my amp and purchased a Markbass F1 from Mark at Bass Direct who very kindly let me play through the variety of Bergantino cabs he had and by the end of the afternoon I'd sort of settled on the AE112. My other option was the Schroeder 1212L which I tried in the Bass Gallery. My only reservation on the Bergantino's is that most people seem to use 2 1x12's and my budget would only run to one for the foreseeable future. (At least until I can convince the missus that spending £6-700 on another cab is justified!) Can anybody who already uses these cabs tell me/reassure me that a Berg 1x12 would be sufficient for most gigs? I play in a couple of function bands and a 6-piece ska band (2 guitars, drums, bass, sax and trumpet). I'd say that the majority of gigs I do have the bass D.I.'d, but just in case I want a cab that is going to cope. I think I just need a bit of reassurance before ditching the heavy 4x10. Also, the schroeder has the tilted speaker which I'm sure helps when using it as an on stage monitor (if stood on its side), but what's the best solution if using just a 1x12? Any opinions, experiences are greatly appreciated.
2. Gutted. I'm hopefully going to try out an F1 at the weekend and if I liked it I would have had that F1 for £500. Would have meant I could have bought a new amp and cab at the same time. Oh well, I'll carry on saving I suppose.
3. Another +1 on the Korg. It has no problem with the B string.
4. Having seen your board on the pedalboard forum it would be worth a trip to stockport to try it out.
5.
If it's past Watford and people can't talk properly then it's the north.
As opposed to all the londoners with their cockney rhyming slang, "innit" and the rest of their colloquialisms? Such as "I'm gonna proppa knife you up good if you don't gimme your phone, innit." Ooh. Bring on the North-South divide.
6.
Both. My 1210R came direct from Jorg as back then you couldnt get them over here and my 1212L came from SHX music a few weeks ago. Price wise they worked out about the same although getting it here was a lot easier as getting it from Jorg means you have to transfer the money in to his bank account as you cant just order on-line from him. Either way you get the full backup from him.
Thanks, that's good to know. Now all I have to do is find a spare £600!
7. To Schroeder cab owners: Did you find a UK distributor or ship directly from the U.S.?
8.
I love the sound of slap - there's something so gloriously satisfying about it... ...but only if it's done well and done appropriately. I still wince at the thought of one of the first rhythm section classes I had at college - we were doing a basic blues groove and working on getting the feel right with the drummer and guitarist. One of the other bass players got up for his try and immediately lashed into a sloppy flurry of slapped and tapped fills, none of which were in the notation. Thankfully the teacher explained to him, diplomatically, that he was completely missing the point. Sadly, he kept up his approach throughout the course - I hope he's figured out by now that more is not always more. That said, right now I'm going through Stuart Clayton's excellent Ultimate Slap Bass book with the purpose of getting my slap chops really tight and trying to master some of the more advanced techniques. Not because I want to show off, but because it's fun and I like the way it sounds. Simple as that. Though it's highly unlikely I'll be using any of the techniques in any of my bands.
I met him in a bar in Kingston a few years later. He's now a guitarist! ... You're not surprised are you.
9. It was amazing. I wasn't sure how much I was going to enjoy it as I'd had a long week, I was tired and I find most of Victors' songs (i.e. the ones where he sings) very cheesy. I thought it could go either way. But the band was incredible. Anthony Wellington was great and Victors solo was something else. And I bet that drummer feels like on of the luckiest drummers in the world getting the gig for the SMV tour. Stanley, Marcus and Victor. Can't wait for the album and I hope they come over to the UK, rather than just doing mainland Europe.
10. I picked up my pedal from the post office this morning. It took about 14 days from the date of shipping and the customs charges came to £24.04 in total. It's worth the wait (as Matt is justifiably very busy). It is the best fuzz I've ever used and the added blend control is great, tightens up the sound really well. Definitely going to be a permanent fixture on my board. If anyone wants a fuzz pedal they should try one of these.
11. I've ordered the Pickle Pie 'B'. Just wondering how long did it take for the pedal to arrive from time of shipping? I needs tha fuzz!
12.
Which board have you got? I've just checked Diago's website and the three boards have different internal depths. I rememer my old guitarist moaning about how the top of the wah was knackering the foam in the lid when the board was shut.
I've got the Gigman. Yes the wah pedal presses into the foam in the lid, but it hasn't ruined the lid or the pedal in my case. As mentioned before, the only problem I have had is the carpet coming up. My board usually has on my wah and whammy pedal and the carpet does come away fairly easily if you have heavy pedals on it; or you are changing your pedals regularly.
13.
For those of you who have used the combination of both, is a Diago pedalboard deep enough with the lid on to fit a Wah under? I am thinking of downsizing my guitar fx board to a Diago board and want to make sure I could fit a Wah in. I've got a Diago board, but laziness is preventing me from taking the lot apart!
Yes it is. I have a Diago board and my Crybaby 105Q Wah fits on it fine.
14.
Most expensive I can find is £119. iMuso have them for £79.99....
Vintage & Rare Guitars sell them for £179. Bass Centre sell them for £149. Admitedly, both London based retailers! But whoever does buy it will be getting it for a lot less than that. However, I have revised the listing as, as you've pointed out you can get it for £79.99 from iMuso and it's not my intention to mislead anyone with regard to the value of the pedal.
15. EH Q-Tron for sale on ebay. I don't use it, so someone may as well have it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=009
16. I am selling a few items to fund some other GAS. First item is a DOD FX25B Envelope Filter. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=009 I don't really use it anymore, so it seems a waste to hang on to it.
17. Has anyone used the Subdecay Echobox? From the mp3s I've heard, I like it. Just wondered if anyone has any opinions on it?
18. Thanks for that. I've been looking at this pedal for a while, sounds good. Wouldn't mind seeing some reviews of the other pedals on your pedal, like the quasar or the barge concepts. And what is the unmarked pedal in the top left for?
19. Hello to you all. OK, here's the deal. I'm going to be on tour with SKANKt for the next 2 weeks. I'm driving from work to Bristol tonight and from now until the 18th I'll be in a van travelling all the way up to Glasgow and back down to London and right now I don't know where I'll be sleeping night to night. So first off, here's the dates. If any of you are around the area, it would be good to meet you and the support would be much appreciated. Apr 7th - Mr Wolf's, Bristol Apr 8th - Barfly, Birmingham Apr 9th - Club Nirvana, Wigan Apr 10th- The Castle, Oldham Apr 11th- The Parish, Huddersfield Apr 12th- Maggie May's, Glasgow Apr 14th- Joseph's Wells, Leeds Apr 15th- The Red House, Sheffield Apr 16th- The Glebe, Stoke-On-Trent Apr 17th- The Limelight, Crewe Apr 18th- The Bedford Park, London (Streatham) If any of you know any of these venues, please let me know what they are like, as most of them are new to us. Secondly, we have a single out! 'The Cruise' from our latest album 'Thieves Operate In This Area' is now available to download from iTunes and other downloady type sites. Also, available on iTunes is Full Control from our previous album, 'Perfect Timing' and one of our live favourites. They're only 79p and if you like 'The Cruise' feel free to download the other one as well. The whole album should be available in the near(-ish) future and a second single will be out nearer the summer. Cheers. Paul
20. All these rack compression units seem to have 2 channels, is there any reason for this? And what effect does running the two chains in series have (as mentioned by Dood)?
21. I've never tried the Bass Whammy, but I do own the regular (red) version and it works fine. I use the octave up/down a lot and the detune (chorus type effect) has also been used a lot. It's one of my favourite and most used pedals that I have.
22. This has been a great thread to read. So, here goes. I'm 29 now and I started playing at 16. I was originally a violinist (since age 9), starting on the piano and fancied a bass clef instrument to help my reading. After hearing Jason Newsteads solo on Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge I chose the Bass. After about a year it was pretty much the only instrument I was playing. I was originally a full-time metaller/rocker but as I played and learned more my musical tastes began to expand massively. Early influences include Jason Newstead, Flea and Cass Lewis. I blame Cass Lewis for introducing me to effects and Doug Wimbish. I moved to London and attended Basstech in 2001. Before then, I'd pretty much played in strictly original bands from pop to metal and I played bass for the City Jazz Orchestra, mainly because I could read and follow chords and less because I was a competant jazzer. I now play in one original band which is predominantly a ska band (although before this band I'd never really listened to ska). We do however try to fit in as much of our influences in as possible and so there's elements of rock, jazz, latin, funk and whatever takes our fancy. I'd say I'm a member of the "Watch the drummer's kick pedal" club. I generally follow the chords and the bass drum and build my bass lines up from there to fit the song and hopefully creating some interesting lines in the process. Other times I'll just hear what I want to play in my head. I play in a couple of covers/function bands. So, that's probably where I use slap the most in public. I used to think tapping was a waste of time until I saw Stu Hamm at a guitar show, even though I was there to see Nuno unveil his new band, Mourning Widows. It was then that I realised when bass players tap it is usually over chords and melodic opposed to guitar widdly widdly type stuff. Although, tap and slap are usually confined to home playing. I play mainly my 4-string for the ska band and my 5 for functions and jazz gigs where I may need the low B or I'm following chord sheets (in case I need to concentrate on the paper and less about my hand position). On stage I'm fairly active. I generally use all of the stage behind the lead singers/guitarists, jumping, spinning, head-banging and a few close calls with the lead wrapped around my leg led to me getting a wireless system. Obviously, this doesn't happen during function gigs. I doubt somebody wants to see a sweaty, bouncing bass player at their wedding. I don't make a full time living out of it, but I love playing Bass, love playing live and my general GAS and gigging has led to very few holidays and an often grumpy long-term girlfriend. Not going to stop now though. Bass is for life, not just for the first 10 years!
23. Hi from another exiled Geordie. Been living away for about 7 years and I'll second the stottie sentiment. I'm still relatively new here too and have already made some very helpful and useful contacts and got some great advice. Hope you enjoy the forums and welcome aboard. Paul
24. Well I was looking at it for gigs where I use 2 basses and FX. Other options would be the EBS Microbass II (but the DI is pre-EQ) or the new Sansamp Bass Driver Deluxe thing.
25. I guess no-one has ever used this thing then!
