Hey.. it works for me. He was asking for recommendations. I'm just recommending something. FWIW, there is a Tubepath 5.1 - a lighter 500w version. Playing devil's advocate for a moment.. I've spent a lot of time with Class-D amps. IME nothing beats the punch of a hefty transformer. Apart from an all-tube head, but even I won't go there.
Truth is we're spoiled for choice nowadays. I've heard people say they don't like class-d amps, personally I don't think there is a 'class-d' sound, because every one I've had has been different. Likewise I'd argue that there isn't a smps 'sound' because you can design them to act pretty much like an analogue supply if you want too. The LMII is very popular on this board (it has a smps) and is generally classed as being punchy. I wouldn't judge the supply or amp architecture on the implementation, but rather the unit as a whole.

I love Cream but very often bands who play it kill the songs due to the vocals. JB's vocals are such an element of their sound that they are quite hard to pull off (trying to imitate him never works). Some simpler pub rock stuff wouldn't go amiss, anything from Feelgood's Let it Roll for example.
Based on recent experience, without a doubt I'd got for a Warwick Tubepath. Here's a recent review I did. You could get one of these, used, for less than £450 if you look hard enough.
How many people actually need a 1000W head though? Especially when there are 500W amps at 1/10th the weight of this. Whatever you buy, I'd look for something that can drive 2ohms, if possible. And don't be swayed too much by power rating - it's a good tone you need. In fact, if you don't have cabs already consider the rig as a whole. Remember that adding a second cab to your rig will give you and extra 3dB in SPL (equivalent to doubling your amp power) and that buying efficient cab's opens up you amp choice (since the head doesn't have to be so powerful). For example a 103dB/1W/1m 800W rated cab can give you a SPL of 132dB when driven with the full 800W. A couple of 103dB 200W cabs will give the same SPL when driven by 400W, but may be a more adaptable rig (one cab for small venues, two for big ones etc.). One other thing, I don't know how old you are, but there'll probably come a point when you can't be arsed with heavy stuff, so I'd tend towards high quality lightweight gear.

As another customer of Steve's I doubt very much if anyone's ever lost a penny doing business with him. What Steve does (or doesn't) do in his private life, or how he chooses to run his finances is nobodies business but his own. If I was in the market for another Lakland bass there's no doubt he'd be my first port of call.

1973 Jazz - Sunburst'n'Rosewood - Defintely Withdrawn.
BB2000 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Basses For Sale
Why are folks so worried about neck pocket gaps? If it's 0.5mm or 2mm it ain't going to sound any different. If the neck moves in the pocket tighten the screws up! I've always preferred Fenders with a bit of a gap - with some of the Japanese Fenders you sometimes can't get a cigarette paper between the neck and the pocket, and more often than not you'll end up with paint chipping at the edge of the pocket if the neck does get a knock. Nice bit of rosewood by the way, and it's nice to see an honest description of an older Fender. -
please tell me something about the US built BB3000 I didn't know them.
I don't know the whole story, but the general consensus is that when they (Yamaha) were seriously trying to take market share from Fender they were chasing serious endorsers. One of these was supposedly Jeff Berlin, who had been given a BB3000. He supposedly specified a 1.5" nut version with V/V/T which became the BB3000s. At the end of the day he never became a Yamaha endorser but the BB3000s was placed on the market anyhow. I've no idea why (or at least I've read dozens of theories and don't which is true) but initially the manufacture of these was subcontracted to alembic. Incidentally, I don't know if you're aware but they still build the BB3000 in Japan, with a street price of about 190,000 yen, which isn't bad considering the strength of the pound against the yen. The BB3000s's sold even less than the BB3000's back in the day. There's a heap of Yamaha basses that never saw the light of day outside of Japan which most people have never heard of (like the 2000VI) - if you manage to collate accurate data on all these that would be impressive!

I wonder if they sent the original one back to him. I had an extended loan of a 750 last weekend, and it's a cracking amp, you can get some really nice tones mixing the two preamp channels. The Neo-Pak is great as well, they're very easy to use in a master/slave arrangement. I've ended up with 4 Neo's, and am in two minds whether to sell a pair to fund a 750.

The 2000s (the BO short scale 2000) has a rosewood fingerboard. Or at least the one I had did, so I assume they're all the same. Some of the legacy data on the Yamaha site is wrong (the BB2000 body is listed as maple, but they aren't on the BB2000, BB2000F or BB2000s). There were a lot of Japan specific BB Yamaha's as well that aren't mentioned on their site. They don't mention interesting guitars like the US (alembic built) BB3000s basses either.
I'm a huge fan (a real lover) of the 80s Yamaha BB Series... I actually own a very nice couple of BB3000A and I'm trying to collect and sort as many info about these basses I can... so, if you can contribute or just want to take a look at my work... here I am and here it is the table I'm trying to fill: http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p7j...PgUJBjdfvWI2aZA Cheers!
I've never seen a 2000 with a maple body (I've 3 and they're all alder). The 2000s has a rosewood board. There are also fretless and 'BB' variants of a lot of these. There was a BB450 as well.
Hello! It's a great pre. Can I ask what bass you used it with?
Tried it with my 50's Precision (bloody great bass - I'm selling off all my other Precisions and am just keeping this - can't believe how good they sound), a BB2000 (of course!), a Japanese jazz (JB65) and a couple of my mates instruments (an 80's precision and an Ibanez Blazer??). Oh - and a BB1500. Bugger all hum. (WOT - if your replacement still hums when it arrives insist on having it swapped out again.) If the rumour of a new high power Neo amp is true I think it'll blow away the Eden/Mark bass/AI/EA gear. Pity their European sales channels aren't that good - they should go through thomann or similar. I've been trying to get a bag for the Neo-Pak in the UK and they prices asked are comical for something that costs $30 in the US.

Had a chance to play with a GBE750 today. Couldn't tell the difference A/B'ing the tube channel with a Neo-Pak. Nice amp.
Damn straight - same here. But I have been lent a book of bass patterns over different chords. I need to dig it out and find the proper title. You might find it useful.
Which book is this?
