Jaco’s 1962 Fender Jazz Bass “Bass of Doom” Found!
Jase replied to Funkmaster's topic in General Discussion
IIRC, he threw/dropped it out a window and it got run over by a taxi. I think he says something about it being away getting repaired in his instructional DVD... I might be wrong. This bass, and another Jazz, later got 'stolen' some time before he took a holiday at Bellevue Hospital. Given his mental state, the fact that he was often homeless and reduced to begging for food in this period, and the fact that he often left his instruments unattended and at least once had to buy back his bass after giving it away, the nature of the theft is open to some interpretation.
Ahh, right. Cheers I had heard/read about the taxi story, like you say it's open to interpretation. Apparently the bass is still a joy to play. -

So the " Bass of Doom" was given to Jaco with the maple finish etc????? Just a tad confused, I thought he lost it when it was all knackered and worn out......and died not long after http://www.hamiltoneguitars.com/palmbeachg...iliano_Jaco.jpg -

Advice for a rock bassist wanting to expand horizons!
Jase replied to Bigwan's topic in General Discussion
I didn't mean it to come out like Rock music is one dimensional, I mean my playing is one dimensional. I'm constantly coming out with the same old fills, etc.
Yeah, I know, was just trying to get a feel of your taste just to offer a few suggestions -

http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14814 'rolled over neck edges' - that sounds'a'niiice - what does it mean? in the interests of not hijacking this thread, respond in the other topic if you wish. sorry cris. cheers, sparky.
It gives the edge of the neck a sort of worn in...smoother feel.

Whether you choose MIA, MIM, CIJ, you won't go far wrong, Fender basses are a good reliable instrument to use live and in a studio, have a shop around, they all have subtle differences.

What sort of rock have you been playing Bigwan? Just wondering what you found one dimensional -
+1 for bilbo suggesting Percy Jones, well worth checking out his approach and applying it to the rock side of things, the other chap that's also worth checking out is Mick Stevens.

Elvis had cool low end vibrato.

I'm sort of with bilbo on the ERB side of things, I don't have a problem at all with players that use them, perhaps it's early days for 6+ string basses, hats off to players who understand chords and theory in the higher register.....any register for that matter, cos I sure as hell don't (wish I did) but I haven't seen or heard much by an ERB player that grabs me, makes me want to buy his/her album or see them live.

I'd bid if he was willing to post the bass but says he'd rather have it collected, I'm the same as darxide, wouldn't want to pay too much for curiosity.

I'd love to have a blast on this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ozark-Bass-Resonator...1QQcmdZViewItem
oooh hang on can we bring this back from another discussion of "do you think the bass player should do a solo?" I think we have covered that several times and I'm on the side of the majority. I do play a bass solo when introduced at wedding gigs - it's over the verse part of "Coming round the mountain when she comes" and is mostly the Pagannini cello riff from the South Bank Show intro, but it's less than a minute long That's plenty. What I'm really talking about here is when someone says "play something for us" and you reach for the bass ...
I wouldn't mind being able to do this if someone said "play something for us boy!!"
You've never heard 'Ascension' then!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kotK9FNEYU Was just playing along to this, and noticed that I'm dragging slightly. Seems my reading is getting a bit rusty unfortunately.
I think for BBC's punishment.....in showing disrespect to the heavy weight of jazz, is to sit through both editions of Ascension, followed by a dose of Interstellar Space :brow:

Always worth looking on ebay, I think Jazz replacements are about 150-200 quid from WD Music and Allparts, might be just as well to get a whole bass, there's on for sale here, looks a tidy little number http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=15760
