1.
I see from your sig that you have a 5-string. Make sure that's the bass you have with you on the night.
I love each of my instruments, but the Cort is my "go to" bass, the one I'm most comfortable on, and the one I'd take. To flip my original question the other way around: How easy/acceptable would it be for me to ask the band to play in the original ("my") key? Given that it's just for a couple of songs, and I've had no rehearsal time?
2. So, if it's not in the original key (which is the one I know, inside out, back to front, upside down), is it OK to shoot the singer? Seriously though, thanks for the pointers. I can transpose pretty much anything, but probably not at a moment's notice......
3. So, you're doing your thing in the local pub/club, playing 60s/70s/80s rock/soul/blues covers. Do you play the songs in their original key? The reason I ask is that I feel the time is approaching when I may end up on stage. I have posted about this previously (post no. 8) and believe me, it's a big deal. Probably gonna be a "guest spot" on bass for a couple of songs, but there won't be any rehearsal. What can I expect? I have to do this, and I'm scared sh!tless.

Hi all

Welcome aboard! Kewl username - got my attention Forgive my ignorance, but what is "math rock"???
5. Can't see owt obviously wrong with your technique. Only encouragement I can offer is based on my own experience: 2 basslines which had my left hand aching like an achy thing were One Step Beyond (Madness) and Billie Jean (Michael Jackson). I think it was just down to the repetative nature of the pattern(s). Constant practise means I can play them all night with no problems. How long have you been playing this song, and how long to you play/practise it for at a time?
6. Interesting reading, this.... The volume pot on my Cort crackles like a crackly thing. Think I feel a little squirt coming on....
7.
Well after years of trying to get back into 'it', giving up (more than just playing), and launching failed atempts to play with people who are more intrested in other elements rather than playing, i have finally found that fire again. I decided to play bass for my friends 'project'. its all his songs etc so i am just a hired gun really (even though he insits thats ot the way) And i've gone back to basics, stripped my gear sound and technique right down to the bare bones. FECK ME ITS GOOD. I no longer worry about trying to write a line that;s intresting, different, will make me look cool. I play with the song, relax, enjoy the music, not worry about if abillity is gonna be judged by some 9 string noodeling nonce and rock out. I'll add bits when needed IF needed but not for the sake of it.r field. I am not for one minute nocking more 'adventerous' play but hey music is about fun and passion, coming form the heart and being pure. Not noodling to impress other 'experts' of your field. i am off up stairs my studio* now to rock out. p.s. not drunk *spare bbedroom
Inspirational, mate. Truly inspirational.
8. I always assume (rightly or wrongly) that anything with moving parts will require some "loosening up" or "breaking in" after manufacturing. Maybe I just have more "mechanical sympathy" than most!
9. Oi! Oi! Oi! I didn't know about this! Why did I not know about this? Tantrum.... etc. Will definitely have either a black polo or a short sleeve t-shirt when next available. In a svelt XXL, thank-you!
10.
..... So yes it can be taught. However like anything just because it can be taught doesn't necessarily mean it can be learned.
I was gonna say that I think feel can be learned, but I'm not sure it can be taught Just my opinion. But my opinion is based on a wee experiment I did. About three months back I video recorded myself playing along to half a dozen or so tracks. Everything was note-perfect. But it's really interesting, because now I play these same tracks way better than I did then. They're still note-perfect, but the "feel" is so much better. They're somehow tighter, the note "punctuation" is better, the technique is better, and all of that - and probably more - adds up to "feel". But no one has taught me; it's just something I've unconsciously learned. Like I said, my opinion, and worth what you paid for it.
11. It would sound much better if the bridge was black.
12. Thanks for all the suggestions folks! Turns out that Audition has a "Group Waveform Normalise" function which seems to do what I want. It will bring the loud tracks down, and the quieter tracks up, to an auto-average point, or to a level which I can select. As I type this, it's currently analysing all the tracks on the other computer and I can see already from the "Eq-loud" figures that the levels are all over the place. It's working on a couple of hundred tracks (my bass playlist) as a batch, so may take some time. I shall post the results when it's finished. Sometime after the 2012 Olympics. Probably.
13.
Digital Audio Workstation - usually used to describe sequencers (e.g. Cubase, Sonar) but since they do much more than MIDI sequencing these days a new term was coined for them. EVERY wave editor will have a normalise function. Even the free ones they give away in cereal packets.
Thank-you! OK, will have a looky through Audition tomorrow.
14.
Run them through a DAW that has normalization of audio files on,something like wave lab or similar would do it or any sample manipulation program. You can then set the normalization level and run each mp3 through and save each normalized track. That way the tracks will all come out at the same level. . Adobe audition was cool edit pro i think so it should have a normalization feature somewhere.
Cheers! Will have a browse through Audition and see what it's got. Erm.... <embarrassed>.... What's DAW? (Not just what does it stand for, but what is it?)
15. Quick question (I hope!).... I have a number of tracks on my MP3 player (Tascam MP-BT1) and they have a vast range of volume levels. I'm not talking about the dynamic range of a song; think of it as playing a CD and the songs are all at different volumes and you have to continually adjust the volume control while listening. (Is this making any sense at all???) I have Windows Media Player and Adobe Audition 1.5 Is there any way I can level everything so that all tracks play at roughly the same volume? Many thanks!
16. I've just ordered a set of AKG K99 cans (£49). Should be here in the next couple of days. I'll post a review in due course.
17. I have the V940B and can highly recommend it. Outstanding value for money!
18. Anyone remember the tv advert - I think it was for the (then) new Peugeot 206? A poor kid in Bombay sees the new Pug, can't possibly ever have one, so gets an elephant to sit on his old shed of a car and bend it till it looks like the 206. Hell, it's a good effort. Better than any attempt I could make at it! Oh, and a Poseidon-5 is my dream bass.
19.
it is Z x
Good venue. Saw the Blockheads there a few weeks back, and going tonight to see Hayseed Dixie. Hope you have a great time! Right. Thread derailment is now over.
20.
Cheers hot Tub! ooo.. im going to Leamington Spa tomorrow... to see Pendulum! Z x
Kewl! Where's that then? Assembly?
21.
At our last gig, I really struggled with my sound.... I could hardly hear a note I played all night, with any amount of EQ'ing, which is not usually the case. Any thoughts or suggestions?
22.
I've got thousands. If you let me know the sort of thing you want, I'll send you some.
That's a very generous offer - thank you! I will PM you shortly.
23. I've been making a serious effort to learn to read music, and after a painfully slow start, am actually making some decent and - to me at least - impressive progress. So recently I've been wondering if there are any on-line sheet music resources? Bass tabs are ten-a-penny, but what I'd really like is pdf's of the bass lines which I can already play, so I can study them a bit more and probably correct all my mistakes! I know we can buy songbooks, but in many cases I don't want a band's entire back catalogue, or the latest album; I just want one or two songs. So, does anyone know of such a thing?
24. I don't really think the bass itself is that important. The set-up on the other hand, is probably critical. Disclaimer: See my sig.
