Cheers folks! Will give the Warwick bags a looky!
-
Need a new one for my 5-string, but don't wanna spend silly money - ideally £30/£40 or thereabouts. Been googling, but can't really tell the good from the bad or the ugly! Any suggestions?

With that budget, you need to take a day trip to Bass Direct here in Warwick. Trust me.

Thanks guys - gonna have a play this afternoon, see if I can figure it out. Again...!!! btw, the tune is Uncle Tom's Cabin by Warrant. Oh, and no B#! Or Fb for that matter!

Figured this was the best place to post this - Mods, please move it if this is incorrect and accept my apologies. OK, question is, these (below) are the guitar chords for a song I'm trying to work out: Cadd9 G D A A5 C5 D5 C#5 E5 G5 G#5 The guitar tuning however is half a step down, so Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, etc. So, what should I be looking at for roots on bass?

Four-week course ends this week, and a few of us are looking to go out on Thursday night. Does anyone know of any live music happening? Prefer a decent rock covers / open mic / jam night. The alternative is the Love Shack in Durham, which is an experience myself and some others on the course would prefer not to repeat! Obviously prefer if there's some Basschat involvement, as I can then guarantee to my colleagues that it'll be a top night!

So, I'm stuck in (what is effectively) a hotel room, noodling through my Tascam thingy, and I decided to play around with the built in effects. Long story short, I've settled on a wee bit of chorus (if anyone's interested in the settings, Depth and Mix both at 10, Level at about 2 o'clock) and the difference is amazing! It's really "filled out" the sound of the bass, but the effect itself is not intrusive, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I got to thinking, who uses just a wee bit of chorus as a component of your "standard" sound when playing live? Or is this something which really only works for headphone practise?

Playing around with "I Predict A Riot" - got the roots sorted and just been improvising around them. Got a few nice ideas going on which still work with the original song. And Roy Orbison/The Travelling Wilburys "Anything You Want". Dead easy, but hey, I just love the song!

Welcome, and enjoy this fabulous forum! Well, we've had drummers, guitarists, keyboards, but I don't think we've ever had a mike... Yeah.... I know.... I'll get my coat....

Mrs HT got me a new set of Rotosounds to put on my 5-string, but being a Scotsman (and, therefor, a tight git), I decided to keep the new ones for a while and have a go at boiling the old ones. So, large pan full of boiling water on the cooker; cut open one of those laundry liquid sachets (they look like small pillows) and empty the contents into the pan; loosely coil up the strings and in they go. Left them boiling away for about 15 minutes, then a good rinse in cold running water and pop 'em over a radiator to dry. Meanwhile, I gave the bass a good clean. Dunlop 65 guitar cleaner and lemon oil which comes in a little kit with a couple of good cloths. The body came up a treat with the cleaner, and the difference the lemon oil made to the fret board is - quite frankly - amazing! Then I decided to clean the frets which were looking decidedly grubby compared to the rest of the now gleaming instrument. I got a new kitchen Brillo pad and rinsed all the pink soapy stuff out of it. Now the clever bit; fold a piece of cardboard (shiny printed stuff seemed to work best) and make the crease pretty "sharp". Then I cut a tiny strip off the crease. When it's opened out again there's a long thin hole in the card. I laid this over the fret I was cleaning and it's perfect for protecting the fretboard from the steel wool. The frets are now immaculate! A bit more lemon oil and job done. Popped the dry strings back on, and WOW! It really is like a new set of strings! In fact, it's like having a brand new instrument!

Ah, thanks for that! Bit nervous about the wire wool bit, but I'll give it a shot with some good quality cleaning cloth.

What would you recommend for cleaning open pore instruments? I have a combination of swamp ash and bubinga bodies, wenge and maple necks, and rosewood fingerboards. There's no laquer finishes - it's all natural wood. Can you get kits, or can I use one "do it all" cleaner?
Thanks Hot Tub,how does it sound if you crank the volume up?
It sounds bigger than it is! The "Deep" switch does what it says - low boost, mid scoop - but is really only noticable at more enthusiastic levels. Not sure how it'd fare up against a drummer (it is only 30w) but it's perfectly capable of p!ssing the neighbours off! Also, it stays clean - doesn't break up or grind at all (which is personally what I like), so if you want that sort of sound you're gonna have to factor in some sort of o/d or distortion pedal.

Just recently got an Ashdown Perfect Ten, paid £105 from Dolphin Music and got it in a couple of days. Very happy with the unit - it handles my low B admirably considering it's "only" a 10" speaker. It has a headphone socket which kills the speaker, and a cd/aux input which is brilliant for playalong practise. Just one thing to note: When using an MP3 player, although the player will provide a stereo output, the combo only reproduces a mono signal. You get both channels, but "blended" into one. This is the same when using headphones - you get two identical channels, not a left and right. It's a minor gripe though, and all-in-all I'm well chuffed and have no hesitation in recommending this unit.

Anyone know where to buy MarkBass t-shirts, badges, etc? I've emailed markbass.it but no response.
