Interesting reading, this.... The volume pot on my Cort crackles like a crackly thing. Think I feel a little squirt coming on....

I always assume (rightly or wrongly) that anything with moving parts will require some "loosening up" or "breaking in" after manufacturing. Maybe I just have more "mechanical sympathy" than most!

But my opinion is based on a wee experiment I did. About three months back I video recorded myself playing along to half a dozen or so tracks. Everything was note-perfect. But it's really interesting, because now I play these same tracks way better than I did then. They're still note-perfect, but the "feel" is so much better. They're somehow tighter, the note "punctuation" is better, the technique is better, and all of that - and probably more - adds up to "feel". But no one has taught me; it's just something I've unconsciously learned. Like I said, my opinion, and worth what you paid for it.

It would sound much better if the bridge was black.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks! Turns out that Audition has a "Group Waveform Normalise" function which seems to do what I want. It will bring the loud tracks down, and the quieter tracks up, to an auto-average point, or to a level which I can select. As I type this, it's currently analysing all the tracks on the other computer and I can see already from the "Eq-loud" figures that the levels are all over the place. It's working on a couple of hundred tracks (my bass playlist) as a batch, so may take some time. I shall post the results when it's finished. Sometime after the 2012 Olympics. Probably.

Quick question (I hope!).... I have a number of tracks on my MP3 player (Tascam MP-BT1) and they have a vast range of volume levels. I'm not talking about the dynamic range of a song; think of it as playing a CD and the songs are all at different volumes and you have to continually adjust the volume control while listening. (Is this making any sense at all???) I have Windows Media Player and Adobe Audition 1.5 Is there any way I can level everything so that all tracks play at roughly the same volume? Many thanks!

Anyone remember the tv advert - I think it was for the (then) new Peugeot 206? A poor kid in Bombay sees the new Pug, can't possibly ever have one, so gets an elephant to sit on his old shed of a car and bend it till it looks like the 206. Hell, it's a good effort. Better than any attempt I could make at it! Oh, and a Poseidon-5 is my dream bass. :wub:

I've been making a serious effort to learn to read music, and after a painfully slow start, am actually making some decent and - to me at least - impressive progress. So recently I've been wondering if there are any on-line sheet music resources? Bass tabs are ten-a-penny, but what I'd really like is pdf's of the bass lines which I can already play, so I can study them a bit more and probably correct all my mistakes! I know we can buy songbooks, but in many cases I don't want a band's entire back catalogue, or the latest album; I just want one or two songs. So, does anyone know of such a thing?

I don't really think the bass itself is that important. The set-up on the other hand, is probably critical. Disclaimer: See my sig.
