1.
My mate uses a single GS112 with a Markbass LMK in a regularly gigging cover band, doing stuff like Springsteen, Eagles etc. I think he hardly gets the rig past 2 or 3. Feel free to chime in Stu!
Stu's band plays fairly low backline levels, pretty sure that was the main reason for using the single cab. I bought Shauns (4000's) 2 GS112's off him, great sounding cabs, but didn't for second suit his Rick tone at all. We go for massively different tones. I like a very modern twang, I like having the horn. At a gig where the backline was our pal, Stuarts 2 GS112's and Mark bass head, the first bass player had a tone to me that was superb (active warwick dolphin from memory...great player as well), shaun's passive Rick through the same rig just didn't do his playing any justice at all. I have been gigging recently with just the one cab, mainly as it is plenty loud enough for the small gigs I have been doing. but have to say the two cabs paired together are superb. As always, one mans tone is another mans bag of washing..... Dave
 2. Another vote for Flightcase Warehouse. Fairly well priced and quick turnaroud. Had lots of cases off them in the past for PA related bits n bobs... Dave
 3.
I will admit that I wouldn't usually play for less than £250 for myself per gig.....
And at this point I feel you are perhaps in a slightly different sort of venue...... Out of interest (and this is genuine interest) what sort of venuess/gigs are you taking this sort of money from ? Dave
 4. Well said Mr Sugden Sir....... Great photos as well !
 5.
....there was never any kind of competition either in chops or gear.....
Yep...we were all crap...the gear was all shabby......
 6. Well, had great weekend roadtrip. Went up for the Saturday night, had a great night drinking beer and eating curry and talking nonsense till 3.30am...sugden went to bed around 9.30 with his slippers and ovaltine... Hats off to Alan for being a damn good host, and organising a great room Its a great location, easy to find, easy to load in and separate quite place to try out stuff without the war volume It was just a shame that more people did not turn up to help start off what could turn into a really good event. .....basschaters....you is one lame set of monkeys...!!! Hey ho, it was a small turnout but to be fair still a cracking weekend. Highlight for me (other than the superb curry) was the curry...no wait...probably noodling on 7strings 9 string. surprisingly easy to play, and it sounded stunning. Alans DR Bass cab sounded great as did Ou7shined's Schroeder. Shuttle 6 - any body say lightweight !! not to mention the ludicrously bright set of Blue LED's. Great to meet and chat with Ou7shined, neepheid Eude, 7string (never met these guys before - top chaps, and great players) Very nice collection of basses to be played even with the modest turnout. Only thing is my head was still hurting from the massive lack of sleep and excess Beer....... Dave
 7.
a car load coming up from Cumbria on the Saturday for a curry and a pint or two. Alan
Indeed..... I'll bring the North/South divide phrasebook.....basically its a big megaphone so we can try and be louder than you Scots in the pub
 8.
Nice one Dave - so pleased for you. Where and when's the gig? If I can make it, I will.
Cheers Alan Its the Hop pocket, Chorley next friday.....See you soon pal if not at that one
 9. OK...just got back from the band rehearsal......and first chance to crank it up... Bloody hell Alan...its a monster.... I was so concerned about getting the tone I like with this new bass.... As soon as I plugged in I obtained one of the best and most articulate bass tones I have ever had the pleasure of working with......I know this sounds like a huge statement, but honestly, its just an enormous sounding bass. I cannot explain the relief I felt. The bass plays like a dream, but most importantly it feels so comfortable and familiar, massively in part to the work Alan did to obtain the narrow string spacing of my Status, and measurements he took of the fingerboard. I have been playing the same Custom made Status Empathy 5 string for the last 10years, and another 5 string status series II (with the same neck and spacing) for several years before that. I am one of those guys who does not change basses often, and am very comfortable with what I have, and how it should sound. I knew the bass would play well, but the sound was THE biggest concern for me, (far mores so than I let on to Alan or Peter -Greenking- to be honest)......but damn what a massive sounding instrument he has created.....The single coils are fantastic, and very quite (other than the enormous sound of bass twangy goodness....) When I got in from work today I got the Status out and expected (and quite rightly so) to feel 'more at home'....It took me less than a few seconds to instantly recognise that the Harlot has grabbed me by the balls and wont let go. Alan....I salute you sir.....you have one very, very happy customer...unfortunately one who ain't likely to buy another bass for another 10 years... Dave 'damn I'm happy' Perry
 10.
A little tip on getting a good meaty slap tone, don't eq the pickups individually, just dive in with both pups on and tinker.Steve.
Cheers Steve...that was pretty much my approach last night. So far I found it more sense to do both pickups together rather than one at a time as Alan and others suggest. What I find astounding is the massive change in tone just a slight eq change makes with this pre-amp. I know its going to be a little bit of a challenge to adjust from what I have been used to with my status basses for the last 12+years
 11. Here she is...My lovely Headless Harlot.......I is one happy bass playing fella. Massive thanks to Alan, above and beyond the call of duty.... Got home from Alans and then had to sort out some work stuff so could not even plug it in until a couple of hours ago..... Just been having a play in my office at home and its a bleedin joy to play.....obviously can't crank it up much..and a bare plaster finished room ain't the best acoustic choice.....but had a mass of fun using the eq..its the one thing that scared/ still scares the sh*t out of me. Being used to simple balance, bass treble and mid eq...Alans pre amp is a lot to get your head round, but damn, the variation in tone is Massive.... The thing I liked is that I got the piano bright sound I love pretty much straight off..... Got band practice tomorrow night, and 1st gig for it next week, and cant wait to get it all turned up in anger.... Volume and mixed in with the band is the only way to really get a feel for how much of a dainty lover or angry slapper she can be... .... I really can't express how good this thing looks in the flesh.... Really looking forward to tomorrow night now.....
 12.
Open to suggestions as to the best opening hours so feel free to air your thoughts. Alan
I think it depends upon what is going on during the day. If its just a gathering to try out bass gear and look at stuff then 12ish-5ish I think is plenty of time, if the plan is to have a couple of guest speakers then perhaps a little more time could be handy, but I still think it probably enough for most people. You have to factor in that most poeple will have an hour or two travelling (at least) and even perhaps a hang over to nurture.... It has to be said that your ears do tend to start shutting down after a few hours of bass....its perhaps nice to break it up into a couple of talks for those who want a break from the slappity slap, boomady boom, so if it starts at 12, perhaps a first talk at 2 and then a second talk at 3.30 ish.... Just my thoughts Dave
 13. Top do fellas...Thanks for organizing the event. Great photos ! Nice thing about bashes like this is all of the gear tends to be high quality stuff that you normally would never find in one shop...and every body is more than happy to let you try it all out... Alans Genz Benz sounded the muts nuts......(cant find a shot of it..) Just wanted to really crank it up, but then its not an ideal situation to do that unfortunately. All in all a great day, great venue, and great burger and hand cut chips......Had a great laugh in the car with Peter and Alan (Skelf & Greeneking) Made the 2.5hours trip a breeze... Dave Perry
 14.
Sorry but I'm not going to be able to make it tomorrow. Don't feel great and I can't manage the long drive. Hey ho...Got Alans Northern bass bash later this year... Dave

 17. Either date is fine by me. Happy to give anybody a lift....In fact it would be better than not as its a long journey on your own.... Will have my ACG headless Harlot by then as well...assuming Alan doesn't slip with the drill this weekend.... Dave
 18. Certainly up for this Alan...could it be a Sunday..?? That way it would not interfere with people gigging on the Sat night...just a thought. Dave

 25. Alan, check out the Robben ford stuff, its great for playing along to, the bass player is great, plenty of scope to do your own thing and just jam along with this gear. Its anything but ' keep it simple' bass playing, as the guy does some amazing chord stuff, but its not in yer face stuff.... its pucker good bass playing....
