  1. I've never tripped over a guitar stand or guitar case.
  2. Weirdly, the "top string" of an electric guitar is read the same as the "top string" of a bass guitar. For example, 5th fret on a 6 string guitar's top E string is A (1st ledger line above treble clef); and 5th fret on a bass guitar is middle C (1st ledger line above bass clef). Its a happy coincidence due to the clefs being a 6th (actually a 13th) apart and the top strings being the same distance apart too.
  3. Its just one of those things, you are what you practice. If you don't practice it, even if you once learned it, you'll probably forget. I need to do some reading practice before rehearsals start up....
  4. Thanks for the feedback. Its a real guitar amp, when I dialled in the initial tone I liked it and went "yes!" but I've always preferred quite harsh, trebly guitar sounds rather than more rounded. I think its because a lot of my experience comes from playing guitar in big bands, where I try to go above the alto saxes rather than compete with them. But point taken, I ought to try a few different variations, then see how those sit in the mix. I got into the habit of taking a DI signal from the guitar too (which isn't actually used) so I could play around with re-amping too. Also I recently bought a Native Instruments keyboard and it came with a ton of software including the "Guitar Rig 5" plugin. So that might be worth a look at.
  5. Whilst I sympathise with Sting's plight, he was taking his chances by chucking a bottle into the sea with a message in it - and let's not mention microplastic pollution either. He would have been much better off with a GMDSS-compliant VHF transceiver or a satellite phone. Mind you, it came good in verse 3 (although it took a year or so).
  6. Are you saying she didn't come at all, and faked it?
  7. Bowie, Starman: "Some cat was layin down some rock'n'roll" Anatomically, the domestic cat simply doesn't have the reach to play an electric or bass guitar with both hands, thus the proficiency on those instruments is sadly lacking. Drums too, their body weight is unlikely to operate the bass drum pedal with sufficient force to create a suitably-loud beat necessary for the genre. And their keyboard skills......
  8. Being quite late on in their careers, I am surprised The Beatles needed to write an entire song "Something" (...in the way she moves.....reminds me of no other lover....blah blah blah). Its fairly obvious, its her derrière.
  9. When Adele sung "never mind, I'll find someone like you" she didn't really think it through. Because, someone very similar looking and in the area, may well be their brother/sister or cousin; or a close friend, girls always seem to hang around with mates that look similar? When I was at school, going out with an ex's sister not long after, actually turned out to be really annoying for the ex.
  10. Whenever some crappy covers band does "Nobody does it better", I feel its my duty to point out that Carly Simon did it better.
  11. Live and Let Die: Its either "in this ever changing world in which we live" or "in this ever changing world...which we live in". NOT "in this ever changing world in which we live in"!!!!! Grrr!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. My favourite is Zombie Crew by Send More Paramedics. "10,000 volts of current fills the room"......hmmm, does it? Regarding lions etc, I have always wondered upon the historical anomoly of small children having a teddy bear - a bear is a dangerous wild animal, very unsuitable for domestication.
  13. Given that community centres etc can re-open from July 4th, at least that gives a firm idea of when rehearsals can re-commence. Its just up to the rehearsal venues to confirm.
  14. https://www.sheetmusicwarehouse.co.uk/20th-century-songs/travis-tritt-country-club-its-all-about-to-change-songs-from-the/ is the closest I can find.
  15. Its a tool for going from "I haven't got a clue" to "I have a clue". Once you can actually read, you don't even associate them with the note names, you just translate what's on the page directly to the position(s) on the fretboard. Even with key signatures.
  16. I think its to do with underlying legislation. They're not legislating, just releasing guidelines. Some aspects of different Covid-19 restrictions are written into law but a lot aren't. Of course, if some incident were to happen, and then someone tried to sue the pub later on, they could use the fact that they went against a "should" in government guidance. But then, there's lots of pubs who would say that doesn't apply to us; and/or we can mitigate the risk in another way, so having a law which they'd technically need to break rather than a guideline would be too restrictive and not the intention.
  17. Geeez don't go too crazy! Its only a global pandemic.
  18. Does anyone have clarity on the issue of outdoor performances? In one document it says "Venues should not permit indoor performances, including drama, comedy and music, to take place in front of a live audience." and in the other one it says "At this time, venues should not permit live performances, including drama, comedy and music, to take place in front of a live audience. "
  19. Would you be comfortable to share a larger (so that everyone can be socially distanced, probably at 2m because the extra mitigations for 1m would be difficult) rehearsal venue, which was much cleaner (regularly cleaned) and has a Covid-specific risk assessment published and available for all to see? Because I think that's the reality - but its now up to venues to take those next steps (for rehearsals).
  20. At 1:10 she fiddles with the IEM receiver, probably can't hear the drums.....
  21. Gigs of amateur bands clearly fall in the "high risk, low economic value" category. My main fear is if areas such as gigging, and many others, are introduced earlier rather than later, the R value will be (for example) R=0.9 instead of R=0.7, which results in the pandemic dragging on longer than it otherwise could do.

  23. Thanks, I thought there would be official advice offered to underline the announcement yesterday. It makes perfect sense from an epidemiology point of view, although I can understand why some people would have associated pubs reopening with gigs starting again. As has been said, things are going to be different, for a while yet. I've already seen the shambles in the car dealership sector - they reopened car dealers, but didn't reopen car auctions until 2 weeks later - which resulted in bizarre prices, shortage of stock and there's severe logistics issues with transporting cars safely. Oh, and DVLA are still on holiday too which doesn't help. Similarly, they pragmatically ought to allow rehearsals at least a few weeks before they allow gigs, otherwise its going to be a similar, but musical, shambles. (Perhaps not as musical as it ought to be!)
  24. The problem is, there are many businesses whose business model is somewhat marginal and they need some kind of incentive to get punters in (be it a shop, pub, website app, widget factory selling stuff, etc etc) to be profitable. With Covid 19 and the required social distancing that goes with it, many businesses are simply unviable. Fortunately, the government is artificially propping many of these up with a humongous financing package. Put simply, pubs don't need or want bands at the moment. Maybe one day, environments such as pubs etc won't need to impose social distancing - the idea being, if the virus is sufficiently quelled and the ability to test/track/trace is well-developed enough, then an outbreak can be known about and acted upon swiftly enough to make a difference. Also there's other factors such as people's awareness and possible treatments. And of course it would rely on the number of people with it to be sufficiently low too. Only once we're in that area, will government not need to 1) restrict the operation of pubs quite so much and 2) offer that financial support. At that point, pub gigs should return. BUT.....in the meantime, we're in a "new normal"TM situation. Bands could and should adapt, there are other opportunities in addition to pub gigging. They just take some amount of effort to accomplish and an amount of determination to achieve. Personally the example which comes to mind is a drive-in/open air gig. Its summertime after all, apparently.....at least for a few more days.
