So sorry to learn of this.

Looking at combo amplifiers of earlier years (eg AC30, Bluesbreaker) it would seem that they were intended to be put in front of the user. Why else would the control panel be that way round if you were supposed to stand the amplifier behind you? It's not often I've seen them used this way (if at all) but if you did, it would direct your sound out front where it's wanted and leave you enough to monitor with from the open back of the cabinet. In a venue large enough to require a big PA for everything I guess you could put your backline anyplace you liked where it served your monitoring purposes best (so long as you had a wall of dummy stacks at the back to look cool), but in smaller places you've always got that compromise of the backline having to serve as both a monitor and throw the sound forward to the audience. Maybe bands should all use JamHubs with InEarMonitoring and their favourite amplifiers in acoustically sealed boxes at the back with microphones in, with one lot of sends going to the PA.

So was Glenn Gould. You're in good company. My nonsense lyrics are often about my cat. Pussy Pussy Furry Pussy for a bar full of quavers for example. Whatever works ...

Bluejay makes a lot of sense. I'm a guitarist before anything else and I tend to notice & analyse the guitar stuff first. Then the bass, then the keys. I'm usually aware enough of the rhythm to tell you the time signature, but I'll probably try to guess the key first from listening to the way the rhythm guitarist voices his chords. Music that I don't analyse includes Tudor church music, and the more complex forms of jazz. In the words of Sir Thomas Beecham, I just "like the noise that it makes"

Thanks for that. The guy is brilliant, I've loved his work for years!

Slightly OT I know, but I liked Jeff Berlin's bass-wise version of El-Clappo's Crossroads
I think we should try to avoid extremes, it isn't between treating like glass or abuse, or between putting a glass on a cab and pouring beer down onto valves etc, no-one is going to do that, just being much more precious about the gear than we used to. (If a glass gets knocked on a cab you'll need a j-cloth, not the end of the world.)
... until the beer dribbles in through the air vent and shorts the HT rail to the signal input, or causes a valve to shatter. That's why you take such precautions.

I paid good money for my gear and couldn't afford to replace it so I take good care of it. Ultimately my gear is tools not family heirlooms so wear & tear happens but even so I'll do my best to minimise that wear & tear. As for drinks on amplifiers? Well if the results of liquids spilt onto hot valves doesn't bother you, go ahead, but not on MY gear ...
that's what I think. And the smaller the better - I will probably take it places (like to work) and practice.
There's a reason why Behringer stuff is cheap, and it's not necessarily substandard features or performance. Some of it is down to physical robustness. A mate of mine has a small Behringer desk in his studio which he uses in his "practice rig": he says it does the job as far as the sound is concerned but it wouldn't last long if he went gigging with it. You may wish to consider a good case to put it in if you're going to take it out of the house.
Some friends got married at the weekend and they asked for a band to play the music during the service. The keyboard player wore a similar jacket to mine. We were nicknamed 'The Biege Brothers'. Luckily there was plenty of Champagne to drown the shame.
I guess you were concentrating but you look like you'd be having more fun at a funeral. -

Bump! I have a drummer for www.musica-electrica.co.uk ... a keys player I like and respect very much told me he'd take an interest if I could find a bass player. Prog rock, Mid-Suffolk. Email me via the address on the above site. Go here http://soundcloud.com/phil-aka-pip/theg-suite for an example of something we might play (with whatever changes you could think of to improve it).
I played a gig recently where a person commented how I just stare into space and become really engrossed in the music and become very natural and fluent. Truth of the matter was that was a TV facing us infront the stage and I was watching Barcelona v Real Madrid! My facial expressions were being influenced by what was going on the pitch during the game, not the music we were playing. Ok, I admit, I should pay more attention to what I am doing instead of being distracted like that, but I thought it was funny how my body language was bing misread. I looked like a super spiritual musician really getting into it, but the reality was that I was enjoying the football match!
I did a bass gig a long time ago in similar circumstances, part way through the set someone switched the telly off, and I made myself unpopular with the singer because I hijacked the microphone to say "Oi! I was watching that!"

I confess to being unfamiliar with the phrase zone out ... sounds a bit American to me. However from the context I get the impression that it's when you go on autopilot and stop thinking about your playing. A guitar tutor once described it as "there's a guy behind you and he's going to reach round and take over your instrument; while you're conscious of each note he won't do that but he will take over as you let go". This has happened to me on some occasions, and it has resulted in some good playing. However there have been some other occasions when I've "woken up" and thought "wow this is amazing what's going on here?" and that's when it's all fallen apart.

An audition isn't just about how good your chops are, its about how much you're willing to work with the band. For a covers band they'll need to know how good you are at learning new stuff as well as how well you can play. I say (along with other posts) learn whatever they ask you to learn. You can always make suggestions for songs to cover (that you know and think would work) once you've got the gig.
