1.
Gene is an awesome player but surely 70's influenced rather than 70's in origin? Otherwise you could include Julian Crampton as well?
Sorry, didn't answer your question - agreed, Perez is a modern exponent.
 2. Crampton is a personal fave as well. To my ear, Perez is more disco whereas Crampton is more Jamerson influenced. Truth is, they're both such awesome players they can probably both do virtually any style. A question, listen to Incognito's Night's Over Egypt and MAW's remix. Which bassline do you prefer? I prefer the original - one of my fave Crampton basslines. Gary Crocket also does the style well - check out The Superphonics. 3. What was the purchase? A house?

 5. Find whatever you can played by Gene Perez of Masters at Work - his lines are pure joy.
 6. 1. Silverfoxnik 2. Walman 3. Merton 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Sorry guys, got to take my name off. My brother plays sax for the 80s sca legends the bEAT - they're playing in Brighton the night before the road trip and he's going to be staying at mine. Next time eh?

 8. If anyone's a fan of Paul Jackson's playing with the Headhunters et al really ought to check out the Bentzon Brotherhood. The bassist Kaspar Vadsholt has got the style totally sorted. His lines just put a on my face! Awesome. [post="0"] http://www.myspace.com/bentzonbrotherhood[/post]
 9. Yeah, it's great - I'm able to groove properly again. Glad you're enjoying the Jazz, hope you sell the other pups. I think the extra inch of scale on the DJ takes a while to adjust to, I can see why you didn't want to be switching mid gig. All the best matey
 10. Nik, why d'you sell me such a nice bass - I've gone nuts on the practise front and now I've got numbness and tendon pain in both my hands and forearms... So, whatever exercises you adopt, go easy!
 11. bump
Zoom Effects box. Bought but couldn't be arsed to work out how to use it. Manual downloadable in pdf format from Zoom's website. I just gave it a go to make sure it works and I think the circuitry must be pretty good because the sounds are really clean. Would make a great headphone amp (for when you're getting on people's nerves). £20 + postage. I'm in Brighton. Local pickup would be ideal but I don't mind taking down the post office. Thanks for looking.
12. Would those less in favour of practicing scale forms suggest an alternative means of developing left and right hand dexterity? That's the only reason I'm doing them. I think to an extent, learning an instrument is a little like training for an athletic event - a shot-putter never lifts weights in competition, but the strength gained from lifting weights help to throw further. In a similar way, if you have the dexterity to play scale forms at a high tempo with good tone, it will make you sound better when your note selection is more deliberate. Does that sound reasonable?
 13. Just bought Jazz Hanon. Don't think it's that great for bassists because it's got a lot of pentatonic runs that move up chromatically - tricky on the piano but not such a challenge on the bass. What I'm trying to do is take a phrase from a solo I like and then playing the same intervals on each degree of the scale it's based on. Hopefully this will be good for the technique but also be reasonably musical.
There is a jazz Hanon by Leo Alfassy (see amazon - less than £8). Not seen it up close but thought you might like to know...
14. You've just answered the question - you're into passive. I did have a USA deluxe 5 string that I had the preamp replaced with an EBS. The stock preamp was super trebley and harsh with it. The EBS is quite sweet.
I just have a think for the passive sound at the moment! The Marcus is awesome, but using passive mode most of the time. Why, you had problems with the pre-amp in the past?
16. Is the Marcus preamp not to your liking?
If I shift my Marcus ill have the Jazz!
17. Have or haven't? He first came to my attention on a Master at Work remix of Incognito's 'Always There'. Absolutely amazing playing.
Yes! I'm actually surprised other people have heard of him. Definately one bad mutha!
18. He does a lot of the New York disco stuff. One funky mutha.
 19. I don't normally use fast fret because I'm not really after a super bright sound and in any case, my fingers seem to get a slight reaction to it. I think due to the DJ not being used much, the strings had a buildup of that slightly sticky dust and the solvent in fast fret got rid of it. Basically, fast fret seems to me to be a solvent that doesn't smell horrible. When changing the pickups, just be really careful when you lift the control plate because I think it's quite easy to break the wire that goes into the preamp - you'll see what I mean - there's a thick wire that goes straight into the circuit and that broke hence the original issue. I'm not sure what Bernie did to fix it. I'm sure it's all fine but dig around with caution. If my memory serves me correctly, either the Fender pickups are a fair bit deeper than the KSD's or it's the other way round - you may have to add or remove foam to get the Fenders to fit properly. RE The date: I don't think she's going anywhere and as you said, man's got to get his priorities straight!
Glad to hear it's what you hoped for! Does fast fret work then - I always thought it was a bit of a con? I'm going to change the pick ups over in the Jazz later today which will be interesting given my luddite knowledge of all things electric...See you soon and hope you managed to rearrange the date!! Cheers Nik
20. Just did a trade with Nik. My Jazz 5 string for his Lakland DJ5. Nik's a great bloke to deal with from the transactional point of view as well as to just chat about all things bass Keep your eyes peeled for his gear for sale!!!
 21. I'm loving the bass. Possibly the bass to end all basses? I was going to ask whether the strings had 'Thieves of Sustain' written on the packet, but I cleaned them fast fret and after a couple of hours playing they're heaps better. I think this could be the intrument that inspires me to a new level. It's been a pleasure dealing with you, I'll try to get down to one of your gigs soon.
