  1. After two weeks you'll know if you want it or not. And £500 is extremely cheap for a playable bass with a decent pick up.
  2. Yes, I loved the Honeys and have a set on my laminate bass. It's well worth signing up to a few different sets on Daf's trial so you can find out what strings suit you and your bass. But it's a right faff to keep changing them over. Sooner or later, you'll want another bass too. And a very big wardrobe to hide the extra bass ...
  3. Congratulations! Where are you going to hide it?
  4. I said it. In fact, I think I'll say it again, it's so good. Hooray for Nantwich!
  5. Nantwich is my home town. Hooray for Nantwich! And welcome.
  6. Lovin' the Soular CD I bought from you. Ray Brown is so clear on this, you can hear the fills and runs and feel the really solid groove, rich and warm, that he gets going. I can't stop listening to it. Many thanks!
  7. It's interesting that he ignores the conventions of upright playing, at times gripping the neck like a bass guitar, with his thumb over the strings. Yet 2.58 onwards, he plays with his thumb completely clear of the neck. That's hard!
  8. I'm glad I saw him, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX--sM5G52U
  9. I wish I could do more, Keith. Fingers and toes crossed.
  10. I've just started on artistworks. It's cheaper than a teacher (the 3 month subscription price is the same amount I paid for a 2 hour lesson) and the material is structured. Every so often you are required to submit a video and will get a video response from the tutor. It's probably not as valuable as one to one lessons with a tutor, but on the basis that most people make the same sort of mistakes when starting out, I thought it would be good to be able to review lessons over and over again, see what other people have done and learn from the whole lot. Early days though! Hopefully, this link will work: http://artistworks.com/bass-lessons
  11. If there were but world enough and time, then all these CDs would be mine ... but the three I've got are great and arrived in double quick time . Surely someone will snap up Peterson, Pass and Pederson's 'The Trio'? It was the first jazz album I ever bought, back before CDs existed. My brother snaffled it when I went to college. I bought it again, on CD. Bass on Top is a great album, too. And if you want to hear the expression and inflexions and llittle leaps, slides, hammer ons etc etc, then you really need modern recordings. Christian McBride, anyone?
  12. Niel Tarlton's book of scale exercises is good, too.
  13. If you're anywhere near Cardiff, you're welcome to have a go on my two basses - the more you can try before you buy, the better. I'm pretty much a beginner myself, taking my time to balance the bass and play without hurting my wrist and shoulder, and trying to get those wonderful long legato notes. I have a couple of books and DVDs you could take a look at as well, to help decide what materials to learn from.

  15. And it's arrived at last! Hooray and wot ho for the hols, when I'll settle into a good long read. Thanks for writing the book Rob, and thanks to basschat (dood) for organising a prize.
  16. He must owe you a pint by now, Clarky!

  18. Worth waiting for good craftsmanship! That's brilliant.
  19. Hooray!!! Now here's a question: Would you use the same luthier again?
  20. Sorted - thanks for looking.
  21. Hull mid-week would be impossible for me. North Wales on a weekend, though, would be fine. Even if it's raining.
  22. I bought this second hand through ebay and the book is great but the CD is cracked. No worries with the seller, all speedily and amicably resolved but where oh where can I get a copy of the CD? I found somewhere in Italy, but I may as well buy a new copy of the book as pay their postage rates. Can anyone help?
  23. Yep. All ready to get low down and dirty ...
