I would recommend low tension flats, such as Thomastik Infeld (mentioned above), D'Addario Chromes or Labella Low Tension (*not* normal Labellas). I have tried all of those, and would recommend you made sure to at least hear what any set of strings you decide on sounds like, before buying. Best of all, play someone's bass that has them. The TIs have a gorgeous, mellow sound, and a really soft feel under the fingertips. So soft, in fact, that sometimes they're simply not suitable to the kind of music you may be playing. D'Addario Chromes are my favourite strings, but they do have a bright, zingy sound that may not be your cup of tea. Labella Low Tension are as soft as D'Addarios but have a more traditional, less bright sound, while still producing a well defined sound on each note. Also make sure you're not allergic to one or more of the metals and coatings used in whatever strings you decide to use, as that can make things worse when your fingertips are already under stress.

I'll leave the advice about speakers etc. to others, but you could do worse than check out this thread re. the actual PA 'desk' unit. Wireless, cheap but excellent quality.

Absolutely. And it helps you get familiar with how to plug everything together without having to think about it too hard. And at least, you get to try levels, effects, etc. so you know what to press/drag/mute at exactly what time.

Ha! 😎 Booking a hall for testing is fine, but only for the really basic stuff. If the hall is not full of people, or if it has got sparse upholstery, and/or reflective surfaces, much of the EQ and the levels, and quite a lot else, will end up being set all wrong, and will have to be re-done, differently, for each and every venue the band plays. This is especially true if the band mainly plays pubs, as HJ's two bands do. Don't ask me how I know...

Mind you, apparently Warwick Black Labels are made in the US too (I don't know where exactly), which opens some interesting possibilities. My head hurts.

LOL I'm tempted to ask Mark Gollihur, of the omonymous bass store. He seems to know everything about strings! On a less jokey note, let us know what arrives in the post - take pics! Our community is now really curious!

Thing is, I don't think Warwick would be allowed to use exactly the same colours as D'Addarios for exactly the same strings. I'm reasonably sure D'Addario must own some sort of patent to their combination of colours and strings, and they're unlikely to have licensed it to Warwick... *scratches head*

Yes, your FoH person - NOT the band - will be asked by the audience for their favourite songs, and they won't understand why said FoH person points them to the band leader to ask him/her the question instead. The Pro app is better - doesn't crash, allows customisation of the tablet's display, and moves the Mute button from almost constantly under your fingertips at the bottom of each channel strip to a safer place higher up.

I'm sad to hear about the dearth of lefty models, as there were just as many lefties as righties at Rickenbacker's booth at NAMM. Yes, I know - we're talking mostly fakers rather than originals here, and what is at a show is not necessarily what is actually sent to/requested by the shops. But don't lose faith.

While I'm sure there's nothing wrong with Warwick strings in general, in this case a bit of the tapered section on the low B is actually part of the speaking length of the string, which can't be good for the sound or the stability of the string. In other words, the saddle is actually too big for the diameter of the string at the point where it touches it. I would not accept even a new string if it did the same as this one, and would insist they sent me one with a shorter tapered section.

Actually your theory makes sense. Next question - what to do about it? Can you send a non-threatening ( ) enquiry to Warwick to see if they can shed any light? What would bother me is that the low B is dodgy, both in sound and because it doesn't fit the bass properly. I'm sure that it would sound better if the whole speaking length was of the correct gauge, as opposed to the taper reaching past the saddle. I would definitely contact Warwick before doing anything else.

I doubt it came straight from Warwick like that. It looks more like something done by the distributor. Why would Warwick keep D'Addario strings in their factories, let alone put them on their new basses, when they have their own strings? Even just for the sake of publicity and good PR?

The low B is also the only one that's tapered, as well as not matching the D'Addario colour scheme. It does look like it's a mixed set.
