1. I'm not sure whether I agree with G in disliking Krist because he's not good enough, or because I can't stand Nirvana. I had to learn two of their songs for my bass classes and hated every note.
2. Not a fan of Rob Trujillo (see my list of fave bassists in the other thread, containing Cliff and Jason but not him!), but hell, he CAN play.
3. Damn, RolandRock, you're right, forgot Carol Kaye and Gary Willis. No particular order in my list above either.
4. Cliff Burton Jason Newsted Geezer Butler David Ellefson Ian Hill Steve Harris James Jamerson Duck Dunn Stanley Clarke Marcus and Jaco - in a more indirect way as I don't seem to listen to their stuff all the time. I would like to add that no individual bass player inspired me to learn to play the instrument - I was mostly driven by the desire to "dissect" (so to speak) and play the songs I like, and especially the old ones (any genre) which I have liked for most of my lifetime.
5.
I usually say "Thanks, glad you liked it. Thanks for coming. Are you a bass player?" Then get into a massive argument over why I don't play a fender and whether the second note of the fourth bar in the third song should have been an E or a G#.
Best post in this thread BY FAR!
6.
Because some people can't say what they don't mean
As in "What? Of course I was fan-frigging-tastic on stage, how dare you even assume I could ever be otherwise?" Doesn't sound like something a bass player would usually say, but does sound like some singers and some lead guitarists!
7.
Again, I respect your opinion. However, I still cant get my head around someone who cant simply SAY thanks.
But we ARE in agreement - sorry for not being clear enough. I'm just saying that being unable to say thanks in this case usually isn't as rude or awkward as in other social situations.
8.
I agree, but IMO someone who cant simply say "thanks", lacks basic confidence, regardless of "excessive", "over confident" or the instrument in question. You dont have to be an egotist to say thanks.
Yes, but there are ways of expressing gratefulness for a compliment even without uttering a word. All a bit too subtle for someone, but not for others. Also, we are talking about a special situation in this case, I think, not quite the same as giving a presentation at the office etc., as music is art, and isn't "measurable" in the same way as other kinds of performance.
9.
I would say this is a simple lack of confidende and down to personality, rather than any instrument related issue.
It's instrument-related only in the sense that bassists tend not to be over-confident arses like - erm - some other musicians Lack of excessive confidence is not a bad thing, and does not equate total lack of confidence.
10. Aw, how sweet of you guys. As a veteran member of an audience, I have learnt to compliment bass players' ability only indirectly, because a bass player's normal reaction is to blush and/or not know what to say, or even how to say thank you without feeling awkward (yes, Jack, I'm talking about you as well! ). Drummers are often like that as well. I think it's an endearing tract most of us share, and it's not bad manners at all in my view.
11.
I play bass in a band and we play Jazz Standards and Bublé songs - great fun!
Jealous (of your ability to play jazz standards, I mean! ). Welcome to the fold, Harry. Plenty of multi-instrumentalists and especially bassists-guitarists here - you'll feel at home.
12. Sorry to hear about your troubles, Clarky. Every time Metallica come to a festival in this country I'm sooo tempted to go, be it the "Fab Four" with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, or Download, or whatever... and then chicken out miserably out of fear of exactly what happened to you. I see Andy's point about big outdoor gigs with camping being fun, whatever the weather etc., but I assume he's younger than us I used to do the various Monsters Of Rock festivals when I was in my 20s, but even then, my ex and I always made sure we went to the Italian and/or Spanish legs, as the weather in those countries was bound to be less inclement!
13. Welcome Lee! Squier is not the only option. Do visit a shop and try out a few basses - you may find something in the same budget that you like better. (I for one am not a fan of Squier or Fender basses myself, soundwise and looks-wise.)
14. Looks good! Please keep us posted about any future gigs of yours in London.
15. Welcome, John! I'm afraid I can't hellp you with your question, but I'm confident that one or more of the experts will read this thread and offer advice. Nice bass (and young son)!
16. Apologies - didn't make it in the end... I hope I'll have another opportunity to see you guys soon. Hope it was a good one. If you have any photos, please post them!
17. I would love to come see you guys - haven't been to the 100 Club for aaages... I won't know until tomorrow, due to a possibly overlapping engagement, but if I can make it, I'll be there.
18. Sigh, you're too far... if you come a bit closer to us BCers down sarf, do give us a shout. All the best for tonight, post photos if you get any taken!
19. Welcome, D! Please do tell us more about your touring with metal bands, I'm all ears
20. Two words - Black Sabbath. You'll be fine, fill in the guitar void with the bass and it will sound awesome. \m/
21. Public FB album from last night https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150945417434207.441870.528729206&type=1&l=6ab3d6463e
22. So we officially have reason to agree that playing a Warwick is eminently cool
23. I was in favour of the Like button exactly as it is on FB, where it saves posting +1s and Hear Hears (or "Here Here's"!) but doesn't get counted into a popularity contest. I'm against the Dislike option - I tend to articulate my opinion, if it's contrary to the one expressed by the poster and I'm willing to debate. Otherwise I forever keep my peace
24. Went to see Now Loaded and the other bands at Camden Rock tonight, and loved it. Thank you Mark for posting this gig! Photos to follow on FB - and one or two of them probably also on here - as soon as I've had time to review them.
25. +1 to binning IE and getting FF - works fine, although this site is still, occasionally, a bit slow (nothing to do with our browsers, and all to do with the hosting server, I reckon).
