I think it's a nice idea! I obviously can't take part (lefty + don't gig) but I'd be happy, for instance, to take photos of local BCers gigging the bass, if that may help

Your Musical Development since joining Basschat?
Silvia Bluejay replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
It might be a sad reflection of the state of my existence but additionally Basschat has now become the lens through which I view the world. If I want to find anything out I come onto here first. If it is in the news and worth reading, it is on here. If it is for sale, it is on here. If I (rarely) am bursting to say something, I do it here.
I don't see that as saying anything sad about your existence - rather as giving praise to Basschat as a community. -
Your Musical Development since joining Basschat?
Silvia Bluejay replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I'm not sure my actual bass playing has improved since I joined 14 months ago, but that's entirely my fault - I'm still a bedroom bass player who is learning and playing favourite songs along the record, and that's presumably not going to change for quite a while. That was my plan all along - I never picked up a bass with a view of finding a band and playing in public, I only needed to find some solace in a new activity. That aside, I arrived here from the Warwick forum, therefore I was already in full GAS and in possession of two (Warwick) bass guitars and one upright. I also had some general technical knowledge I gained in my previous life as "the guitarist's woman and occasional roadie/tech" . What Basschat has given me in abundance is renewed confidence in all things bass and all things musical in general, and enticed me to try new types of bass (5-string upright, acoustic bass guitar, fretless bass guitar, and hopefully, sooner or later, a real DB), and a fantastic first port of call for queries of any type, including off topic ones if I were so inclined. All the above still pales into insignificance when compared to the way the actual people I have met through this forum have changed my life for the better. Some of them are now my best friends and immensely important to me. Since this last point is off-topic on this thread, I'll save you my waxing lyrical about it! The only thing I will add is that meeting such great new friends has also given me opportunity to go and see many bands (their own or simply their favourites) I either didn't know about or was only a casual fan of before. That has to count as progress from the point of view of bass playing and music in general. -

Good God, there was I, thinking in Latin and understanding "muliebrous" as deriving from "mulier" (woman) and therefore just meaning "womanly" or "pertaining to a woman's shape". Sigh. Jack, will try to think how I would describe taking off my leathers in Latin. I fear it would have a - totally inappropriate in this context - military connotation -
Welcome, Dr, from the spirit of 1978 (as in - disco fan) and the spirit of the 80s and early 90s (as in - trad metal fan). And 34 years in a band is unfeasibly cool! Join the fun on here, this is a great community. PS If you're near London, you might like to come to the London Bass Guitar Show in March, Megadeth's David Ellefson is one of the guests!

I'm sure it's common sense to assume that the shape of the player's body influences the type of bass that feels right to them. That's the whole point of this thread, after all, even if it started as a female-centric topic. -

Still better than taking them off inappropriately... -

Silvia Bluejay replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Heh. spent most of my life as a younger woman wearing leather miniskirts, jackets, hats (à la Klaus Meine of Scorpions), stiletto boots... All still there and a little too large for my present frame, but one day I'll have a Rockstars themed do and dig it all out, and possibly take clothes in appropriately -

LOL that's more or less what I look like - I think she might possibly be 5'2" like me. My Corvette is smaller than that seemingly humongous thing she's playing, then again she's wearing platforms here -
Take a look at these two threads on here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/195846-which-tuner/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/156472-clip-on-tuners/page__view__findpost__p__1895650
That's a shame.. maybe next time. Getting a date that's going to suit everyone is literally impossible. It's frustrating.
Yes - but I guess it's also because the bash is only three weeks away, and clashes with another one. I imagine it'd have been easier for some of us to attend if we'd had more time to organise our schedules. But hopefully there's always the next one. -

LOL but it's true! I guess being little and in proportion implies that my curves don't get in the way of bass playing! But, as I said, the flipside is that even the smallest basses still look huge on me -
Metallica would have been a place that I would have expected to find good bass......Jason Newsted is pretty well know as is Robert Trujillo. And they are a guitar based rawk band.
You missed my irony then... it was surprising to find bass in such a hopeless place as AJFA, where it had notoriously been lowered to inaudible levels in the mix.
-
I haven't played the youtube bit yet but. I'd have thought that would have required remixing or dubbing to get any bass audible. The bass was originally mixed so low I doubt remastering would be able to do much. Now Metallica own their back catalogue I hope they do remix it. Although I doubt it as it was James' and Lars' desicion to basically remove the bass.
The clip sounds better when listened to with (decent) headphones, by the way. I guess Lars and James will allow official remastering sooner or later, possibly when publishing a new version of AJFA can bring in a bit of cash Also, after the group therapy thingy they appear to have - erm - cleared some issues. Or at least one hopes.

Apparently it's all Jason's work on that clip...
-
I guess I should nominate Metallica's And Justice For All (the album) - remastering or enhancing discovered a bit of bass! For instance this version of Blackened... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAvwod7BBK0

Any hope of persuading Dicktum to advertise on Basschat?

Silvia Bluejay replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
Mel, come on, lighten up a little. We girls did give you a bit of relevant info in between the guys' laughs, after all. My two cents is basically to look far beyond Fender and copies thereof, which are relatively big and heavy (not to mention boring!), and find a small bass (Warwick Corvette, one of the little ones from Status if you can afford it, etc.). With small size usually (although not always) comes lighter weight, and better handling. Having said that, even my Corvette 4 still looks huge on me, but hey ho, I am tiny... Hope you find a bass you can be fully comfortable with. Keep us posted. -
Is that what made you decide to buy an upright? Very wise decision BTW.
Heh. The NXT 5 is ridiculously easy to play. I'm in for a shock, in terms of physicality, when I finally meet a left-handed double bass (the real thing in all its size and weight) and fall head over heels in love with it. -
