Happy to plug the Recording section as a whole on Twitter - as opposed to [s]spamming[/s] continually reminding our followers about the Comp Comp and the Mix Comp Let me know if that can help. What I make a point of avoiding on BC's Twitter account is promote every single release or band gig by members. That would fill up our followers' feeds, irritate them, and also open us to criticism of the "you plugged his gig a lot but didn't plug mine enough" kind.

On a different note - I've finally written that blog entry! If you read it you will notice that I've been rather sparse with people's names throughout. Please feel free to either comment on the blog itself, or here in this thread, or PM me, and let me know if you'd like me to add your name when you appear in a photo, or if someone's playing your bass, etc. The blog can be edited at any time. And obviously, give me a shout if I got something wrong. Another question. I recorded several short clips of Laurence playing bass for us, from the "12 bar blues in G" that quickly becomes an awesome jazz improv to other bits of basslines he played while talking to us. Anyone know how to ask him for permission to upload one or two of them and link them to the blog? Mick, Lozz? I imagine one solution to that might be to organise a "festival" with more than one band playing from the late afternoon to the evening, perhaps preceded by a mini-bash for attending Basschatters. But of course it would be necessary to make sure we can rely on a good number of punters definitely coming along, and from a relatively large area, so that's a bit of an unknown quantity.

Strange that you would say that. I have a set of long scale TIs on my Corvette 4 and a set of short scale TIs on the Hofner, and on both the E string looks huge but sounds perfectly balanced (after height adjustment etc.) without the need of any additional trickery. Have you checked your pickups' height at the E string vs the G string? Edit: With the above I mean I hear no "jump" in tone from the big E to the thin A string.

Checking out DB in need of repair is a good idea, and I'll consider the option if I decide to go down the real DB road, but that would have to be only after I've either re-jigged the furniture in my entire flat, and jettisoned some of it, or I've moved into a bigger flat! Excellent, thank you both! On the basis of what you say, Peter, I actually think I'm doing OK with my ribbon. But yes, if I realise I've seriously caught the bug, I'll find a teacher That elusive lefty DB is still a long way away... but my HB upright has a bridge and neck/fingerboard which are very similar to those of a real DB, so they're OK for practicing as a complete beginner for the time being.

Very interesting, thank you Peter! After we went to Matt McDonald's masterclass I was so inspired I actually got meself a bow! I had never actually held one in my hand, so I went online for info, and decided that French would probably be more comfortable to my wrist. (I think I was right.) I've been practicing gripping and bowing my HB upright - without a hint of rosin for the moment, to save my ears from the inevitable cacophony... If I decided to take it up seriously I would obviously have to find a teacher, but for the moment the main stumbling block for me is being sure I've tightened the ribbon to the correct tension when I'm bowing. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of advice on that detail online. I'll have a read through the site you link to

I have flats on all my basses, regardless of number of strings or presence/absence of frets. They sound great even on the cheapest models, and I don't see myself ever going back to rounds, really.

My tuppence: I love TIs for their awesome sound and for their low tension. I tend to install them on 4-stringers and reserve the somewhat brighter-sounding D'Addario Chromes for 5-stringers. I don't do rounds at all these days.

Curiosity. The desire to explore all bass-related possibilities - fretless, 5-string, short scale, looong scale, and combinations of some or all the above! I still haven't had the honour of meeting a lefty double bass, though, as opposed to an EUB. Which obviously means: GAS lives on!

PS thanks also for liking my Ignition! It's the Indonesian-made model, not the expensive German one, but it looks good and sounds pretty awesome all the same, especially now that I've installed a set of TIs on it
