1. Sweet, many thanks Mr M! I like the idea of having different EQ options for monitors for the 'same' channel as such, very handy! Not something I'm used to on my good old GL3000! The idea of having EQs on all the outputs sounds great too, different master EQs for different groups? Brilliant! Using a jog wheel and display aren't a problem for EQ, comp and gate controls. As long as I remember how to get into them of course! I have no problem with spending time with the thing making sure I know how and where things are. I'll do this before I take it out on the road. In all fairness, I'm looking forward to the learning curve! Nights of the faders flying into position? The Mrs will murder me! I can live with running a few dB down, its what I do with my Allen & Grief and the Mackies anyway, I like 0dBu to really be plus 3 to plus six so I know that 0 is flat out and beyond it is into limiters. I don't like red lights, they only ever mean bad things! And I'm guessing (I can't find a good pic) that -18dBFS is reference and 0 is clip like the soundcraft is? Either way, its not an issue. With regards to the software, I can put it on my laptop however, I'd rather get used to doing it all on the desk just in case I don't have it with me. Sounds handy like you say, just to keep an eye on stuff during a show. I can't seem to find any bad words against them, I'm guessing any teething troubles, Yamaha ironed out early on. Most of the desks out there seem to have the version two software which looks to have a number of useful improvements. Lastly, those flying faders can never get dull can they? Ha!
2. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/photobucket-fixer/ IF YOU'RE USING MOOZILLA FIREFOX THEN USE THE ABOVE FIX TO RESTORE IMAGES - SIMIILAR ADD-ONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR OTHER BROWSERS. I've been a pro live sound engineer for more than ten years and have used many an analogue desk working in venues and for various pro-audio companies. However.. Inspite of this experience, I've always worked for someone else using their system and their desk. All of these have been analogue desks from dinky 8 channel Mackie and Spirit boards up to Soundcraft Series Two and Allen & Grief ML5000s. I want my own desk! I have used a Mackie D8B which was OK but I just didn't quite love it. I also tried a Soundcraft 328XD which was very easy to use but I've read these have a number of issues. Which leaves me with Yamaha. I have no problems Yam stuff, The analogue desks are fine as are the outboard rack units, power amps, speakers etc. Oh and the bikes are quite good too! I'm looking to invest about £700 into a 'sorted' 02R as it looks to suit my requirements and if I decide that digital isn't for me, it can go back on eBay..! Any peeps have experience with the 02R as a live mixing console?
3. Interesting observations there gents.. Maybe Fender are just being greedy? But in all fairness, they wouldn't be the first.. Paul, I know you'll never sell yours! Especially cuz whats on the back of the headstock!
4. In 2004 had the fortune of having a MIJ '75 re-issue and it was a great bass. I paid £400 for it and sold it about 12 months later in a part-ex for a 5-string Jazz Bass Plus (the one with the kubicki and lace sensor bits) and got about the same back for it. Later in 2006 i had to down grade my 4-string Jazz Bass Deluxe (cuz I broke my wrist when I threw my Suzuki at the road!) and wound up buying a Japenese Marcus Miller signature. I bought it £450 and was happy with it at first as its sounded great by itself but I really couldn't get it push its way through a band mix so six months later moved it on for £420. I bought a passive US Jazz bass after it had gone. Fast forward to late 2011 and both of these basses are doing silly money on eBay now. People are regularly asking £750 and there's a 'Miller signature for £900 on currently! I know some (if not all?) of the new ones are US basses but the Japenese ones are pulling the same monies. Did I miss something somewhere?
5.
I was using Peavey from the late 80s until around 2005 - same combo & it never let me down. I couldn't care less what haters say about gear (Rotosound strings get knocked sometimes & then there is the anti-Fender brigade). Live & let live, I say. It'd be boring if we were all the same
I quite agree..
6. I've no bones with Peavey stuff. I loved the 410TVX that I had for a while, only sold it cuz a friend was desparate for a cab! I would have another. I've used countless Peavey PA systems and as long they're not running Peavey amps and have had time being setup are great, plenty of bang for buck! The amps are good for monitors as they have DDT so they can be thrashed without too much consideration. I always thought they sounded a little 'stifled' for FOH use and Peavey watts arent quite Crown/Crest watts are they!? I've replaced a few Black Widows over the years in both bass guitar and PA cabs and most simply been a damaged tinsel/lead lines. I've repaired our HiSys 4 drum fill a few times because of this fault. It does work hard, its bi-amped on a Crown 24x6. I did replace some 18" examples that had nearly been on fire that had been fried by a heavily clipped JBL MPX1200. Having said that, as long as they're not abused (like most speakers) work well without incident. I like 'Widows, they're certainly not a bad driver. Long live Peavey gear, I have plenty of respect for it.
7. I'm not familiar with the Eden range of kit. A friend used to have a 2 x 12 cab but I have no idea about any valve amps that they may or may have not made. I think its ace tho!
8. Might know someone who could be interested. They're not my thing really but if my friend is, I'll post on here.
9.
tinny - thin and metallic in sound; lacking resonance
Still hate it man, still hate it.
10. Thats a sweet looking CX man, real sweet.. You opened the door now so here's some pix you may like Mr D. My '87 FJ currently about 2/3 of its way through a complete rebuild and modification. Note its sat on FZR1000 wheels and suspension. The frame has been powder coated and the engine has Wiseco High comp pistons in. Should be a flyer when its done! I took it to Nurburgring back in 2009; its great upsetting sports bikes on an 'old tourer' ha! 1980 CX 500 A that used to belong to my dad. I haven't told him I've got it. I love riding this bike and I consider myself very lucky for it to be still in great condition after 31 years. Love it! And finally my daily rider. This 1992 Fj gets used all day everyday as I don't drive a car. Its a solid bike which inspite of being nearly 20 years old and having 72k on the clock is still quick, comfy and reliable. The pic is in France at the Milau Bridge last year.
11. My '01 Streamer LX5 has the gold writing (well, it did when it was new!) MEC twin jazz setup. I'm still pleased with them as they're quiet in operation, have a healthy output and perform nicely. The EQ facility (top and bottom) is more than adequate too, I use it reasonably flat, more for just the finishing touches really. The best sounding Warwick I heard was a Streamer Stage one which had a set of Bartolini's in. Very very smooth and very tight especially on the bottom B. Mine sounds great but that one certainly out performed it.
12. I always wind up being guilty of cross forum contamination.. I talk about pro audio and bass on my Yamaha FJ and Honda CX forums I talk about Yamaha FJs and Honda CXs on the bass and Carver forum I talk about Honda CXs on the FJ Forum and FJs on the CX forum I talk about bass on the Carver forum I think you get the idea! Guilty as charged..
13. Sounds like fun! Its what I like about the CX, plenty of personality (not sure 'attitude' is the right term for the CX!) and identity. Love the slight burble and chuff from its exhausts..
14. Thats truly an oldschool bit of kit, lovely tho..Bet they're worth a pretty penny these days. FJs are mint, they're just getting a little old now.. Wouldn't be without one tho!
15. I don't think they are, made anymore. You can still get the manual for them but that seems to be about it. It'd be nice to get some service data too as the bias is adjustable on the back with a multimeter. I did read somewhere that they were marketed as a FAME BV300 elesewhere for a while. I also read that they a re-hashed Eden amp too but I can't find an eden anything like..
16. KH 250: Legendary smoker, sweet man! Triumph 21: Never heard of that model, sorry. Honda CX500: Used to belong to my dad, I managed to find it 15 years after he sold it. He doesn't know I have it yet, Ha! Great bike in an old school steady kinda way. Very charming indeed! GSX600F: My first bike. I thrashed the nuts off it and dropped it a couple of times. Very solid and reliable. VFR800: A few friends have had these, a quick and capable bike with legendary honda reliabilty. V-Tec or none, both great bikes. Shame yours have gone dude. I sold loads of bass stuff including a Status to get into bikes. And my personal weapon of choice: FJ1200: I like 'em so much, I have two!
17. I wouldn't swap my Streamer LX5 for a Spector or anything else for that matter..
18.
Interesting budget valve amp tip off!
It seems to be quite well made (well, from the outside at least), the transformers are reasonably large and quite heavy, it has Electroharmonix branded valves in, the wood work and upholstery are to a good standard, the finish on the brushed control panel is nicely done etc. My only minor criticism so far that the fan is a little noisy in operation. I tried it in the shop and had to have it. A jazz bass sounds great through it, even better with my NE1 (I don't like 1k6-2k5 in my program) unit in front. My Warwick is always my reference and that plus the NE1 with both cabs is stunning. I just hope its something like reliable. So far so good.
19. Cheers man. I'm surprised will hasn't seen this yet..
20.
Tinny - a term that describes a tone or sound with too much top end, and not enough weight. Does that help? I almost asked you to pop out to the car the other night to help me work out why my stereo sounds 'boxey'
Paul, you couldn't help it could you? I hate that term.. Ha! I can live with 'thin', 'harsh', 'sharp' etc and even 'boxy' and 'meaty' but not that one..
21. Hey Paul, All good man, just learning my way round this forum! Cheers
22. One that musicians and none muso (but not engineers) types use: 'It sounds a bit tinny' That bugs the hell out of me.. Tinny? What!? Use your words to decrible what you're hearing. Last time i looked, a tin makes no sound at all unless struck and even then.. Stupid term and none descriptive!
23. Cheers for the positivity guys, its appreciated. I love my Korg MS20, its a truly wonderful bit of kit. I've used it loads of times on recordings over the years and it delivers everytime. I love and don't think I'd ever sell it. I used to play it in a band when I was 17 with an old RockTech delay pedal and an Electric Mistress flanger. Massive and silly indeed! My computer is borderline vintage too! It used to be an XP2000+ but it recently blew up so I upgraded it.. To an XP2500+! High speed stuff! It does have enough power for what I use it for tho. With regards to the Ashton setup: I too could find next to nothing about it on the net either, there is a discussion about it on another forum but even that doesn't say too much. Truth is, I haven't had it that long and haven't gigged it yet but I'm still very pleased with it on all fronts. It has a very clean 'valve' type sound, its a bit more mid-biased than the V-Type Trace Elliot I was used to but that helps note definition. Its not as agressive as the Ampeg pre-amp but probably sits between the Ampeg and Trace sound. I'll write a full review in another topic section when I've had it a little longer but for the time being, i'm very pleased with it. Especially when the full stack in the pic only cost £500! Bargain..
