Sound City Mk4 B120 1973 £300

Hello, For sale is my 1973 Mk4 Sound City B120 (120W) I’ve had this a while and will be really sad to see it go, but I’ve acquired an Ampeg SVT and can’t justify two high power all tube amps. I won’t go into the full spec here as it’s available all over the net; this site is one of the best http://www.soundcitysite.com/sc_webpages/sc_home.htm -120W from six EL34 valves, x4 ECC83, x1 ECC81. Good quality Partridge transformers with excellent output impedance selection, being a B120 it apparently has extended bass response. -The amp as far as I know is all original (correct me if you know otherwise) .I haven’t touched it since I’ve had it. -It operates fine and works with plenty of clean headroom. - All Sound City Mark 4 variants are known to be noisy/ ’hummy’ to some degree due to the active tone control circuit , this one is no exception and some background noise is present. -The wiring is in good condition and the amp is clean (it is suggested sound city amps have poor wiring, but this one looks neat and well done). -The amp is 36 years old, so has nicks and tears consistent with age, most of which can be seen in the pictures. The front panel writing is fading, but still readable. -It may be wise due to the age of the amp to have it checked over by an amp tech, but I'm not aware of any problems with it, it has always been a reliable amp. Any queries or questions send me a mail. £300 Collection from Central Bristol (BS3), currently no mailing options Cheers Neil

Hello. I'm having a big clear out and first to go is a pair of B&W (Bowers and Wilkins) DM11 speakers:- -These date from between 1978-1984, made in the U.K -The speakers are complete and fully working (I cranked them up yesterday). The 8" woofers and tweeters work fine on both units and are not damaged. -They are well made and solid; they are a 2 way unit with removable grills and 4mm banana connection sockets at the rear (and fuse) - They cabinets are tatty, they have scratches and dings , but could easily be restored by the right person -who has the time. The grills also have slight damage but the plastic housing to hold them to the speakers are all there and intact. - Size 20" (H) X 10"(W) X 9.5"(D) Only £20 – (which is what I paid for them a while ago) Collection only from Central Bristol (BS3), sorry I don't have the time to pack them up for postage, due to size and weight. Cheers Neil

Wiring of an old cabinet with 2 odd speakers
orangepeelneil replied to bennifer's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi Ben, Basically your wiring speakers options are :- 1. Series i.e 8+16 = 24 Ohms 2. Parallel i.e 8x16/8+16 = 5.33 Ohms Watch your wiring to avoid phase errors and check out below for speaker wiring diagrams (on the drop down menus in Dr.Decibels secrets) http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/f...cibel/index.asp Most amps would drive a 5.33 Ohm fine, but mixing different impedance speaker isn't good practice. To quote Celestion:- 'It isn't advisable to mix speakers of different impedances in one cabinet. This is because power will not be shared evenly between the speakers and it can cause frequency dependent shifts in the power balance. This will sound terrible, can affect the amplifier and may damage the speakers. It is always best to use speakers of the same nominal impedance in one cabinet. (Similarly, it is also advisable to have extension cabs with speakers that have matching impedances)' Hope that helps Neil -

Hi, I now run a Licenced Pro-tools home studio set-up, but I would recommend Adobe Audition. For years I used Syntrillium Cool-Edit Pro 2.0 which was a good wave file (.WAV) editor and the multi-tracker is pretty good, and has some very usable effects, I've always found it easier to use than Steinberg Wavelab. http://www.adobe.com/special/products/audi...yntrillium.html Adobe bought out Cool-edit and you can do a 30 day free download of the latest Adobe Audition 3.0 from the website which I have used for Vista and is fine. http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/ You may be able to download a free full copy of the older Syntrillium Cool-Edit Pro 2.0, but i'm not sure if the driver support Vista, I have only tested with XP. Any technical problem send me a message Hope that helps, Cheers Neil

Hello everyone, I have a 9V /Phantom powered Hartke bass attack VXL tone shaper/pre-amp for sale. http://www.soundtech.co.uk/hartke/vxlbassattack I bought the unit as part of a package a while back and it has a fault. The unit has two independant fuctions 1.Preamp and 2.VXL (harmonic tube simulator tone) Basically the Pre-amp (3 band boost and EQ) works fine but the VXL effect only works with the harmonics knob to max, so its either off or on full. If has footswitches for 'SHAPE' and effect 'ON/OFF' Someone has been in the unit and a few screws are broken(not me!) the ground lift /phantom push and pre/post DI buttons have lost their rubber outer collars but still fuction- with a screwdriver! May be useful to some one- for parts alone as spares/repair. £15 delivered ? comes with original box and instructions. Regards Neil

Hi There, I'd be interested in the unit, My Dad could collect he lives fairly local in Leamington Spa but often goes to Banbury for shopping. Let me know- I could organise a fairly swift pickup. Regards Neil

Hello everyone, A somewhat delayed but updated follow on from the tele-bass pickup topic.... I received my reworked Fender TEB101 hum-bucker pup back from Andy at Wizard promptly a few weeks ago. I installed it into the SVM tele-bass. I also screened the all cavities and fitted new alpha 250K pots and a sprague 47nF cap. Andy reworked the pup to be more akin to an over-wound P bass pup (it is still 16K Ohms mind), as I wanted more of a single coil sound-I always loved the way this bass sounded acoustically, but amped up it was just mud with no clarity. Results -Fantastic... much more top and middle, the standard P bass tone stack works a treat, rolls of the treble to get more of the pup muddy original sound. -I guess the pickup neck placement is still is a big factor, but I'm getting much closer to the P-bass nasal honk which is the sound I wanted. -Winding up the gain on my tube amp allows the pickup to naturally overdrive the preamp tube and I get the Jack Bruce 'Badge' cream sound, whilst retaining some top end clarity. £45 for the pup reworking and £5 for the pots and cap. On this bass the tuners are upgraded to Schallers and it has a reissue bridge cover... a totally useable bass ..! Thoroughly recommended upgrade. Cheers Neil.

Hello, I'm considering investing in a high power all valve amp, but to be honest I’m not totally convinced by the current batch available. All the amps in question are all over £1000 and considering the Orange AD-200 Mk3 (£1200) and Marshall VBA-400 (£1100) are mass produced PCB amps I've been questioning their robustness and value for money. See: - http://www.planetoftheamps.com/orange-ad-2...k3-bassamp.html http://www.chambonino.com/work/miscguitar/misc9.html http://www.chambonino.com/work/marshall/marsh6.html Don't get me wrong I know both of these amps sound excellent, but will they last compared to proven designs and build quality of old Ampegs and the Hiwatts. The Current Hiwatt 200w head (£1500) and 400W (£1900) are both hand wired are so justify the price somewhat, but it’s still a lot a cash. I'm also considering the alternative of buying an old Sound city L120 and reworking it to a Hiwatt DR103 spec. Does anyone know of any other 100W+ all valve alternatives around £1000? Thoughts, cheers Neil

Hello everyone, Food for thought on the Telebass pickup issue, Andy is rewinding my stock Fender telecaster TEB101 humbucker this week. Will keep you all posted on the outcome Regards Neil 'Neil, Right, we've tested and looked at your pickup, although there are alternative wiring options all are pretty dark and muddy. We have no "off-the-shelf" replacement but we could rewind your pickup to give a more open toppy tone, cost would be £45.00. Cheers Andy - Wizard Pickups Ltd'

Hi Chris, Please see :- http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39537 I selected new topic not reply (duh!) Regards Neil

Hi Chris, Interesting thread… Telebass is spot on in his assessment. My Squire VM Telebass TEB101 pickup has two coils around 11-12KOhms each wired in Hum-bucking mode, I have read elsewhere on the net over the years that the original 70's Tele pickups was a bit hotter towards 30K Ohms in total. The pick up has 8 pole pieces, four on top four below, I also have had mixed results removing the underside pole pieces, and actually the sound was better with all 8 in place. I contacted Hammon Engineering in the U.S about a Darkstar replacement, which was $208 +p&p, plus would involve minor cavity routing (and at the current exchange rate I'm not going down that route.) The don’t often come up for resale ( I guess that’s because they’re so good) I find my pickup unusable even with lots of treble and middle on my amp, It’s too muddy, lacks definition and has limited scope for tone control . I have just sent the pickup to Andy at wizard for assessment; hopefully he can 'tame' the beast and get me a sound more akin to a P90 or single coil. I have generally has issues with hum-bucking pickups for bass, but that’s another topic. I'll let you know the outcome. Regards Neil

Hello Everyone, I've a query about Fender colours from 70's P basses, which someone may be able to answer. Its my favorite with a maple neck and black scratch plate Mike Mills from REM and Colin Greenwood from Radiohead (and Thom York borrowing it) both player lovely 70's P basses in a shade of fender yellow you don't see much of these days . Is the fender colour vintage white or olympic white which has yellowed? I have an old 80's Maple necked Fender P bass I plan to get refinished in this colour soon. Regards Neil

Is this appropriate? check out the description. http://cgi.ebay.com/1967-RICKENBACKER-4005...20364759592QQih If i was spending nearly $4000 dollars on a bass ( and I love these 4005 models ) I wouldn't like the colour described in that way.
