Just took delivery of a pair of GK 212MBE cabs from Thomann. Amazing service - ordered Tues night and delivered today. Seem like a bargain at £205 each and sound great after a quietish pootle this afternoon. Try them out in anger next Friday and Saturday though. I had a set of DR Fat Beams die on me after 3 gigs the other week. Only about 7 or 8 hours playing time and the whole set sounded like rubber bands. Previous Hi Beams had been a bit better but i have just popped a set of Elixir Stainles Steels on to see if they last massively longer. I do like bright piano'ey strings i must admit.

Had a parallel experience last year during my great "i'm gonna join a band after a 15 year break" comeback. Local guys needed a bass player, had a setlist which included some stuff i liked and some that looked fun to learn so i auditioned and got the job. Guitarists were fine, singer ok and i thought the drummer was steady but unspectacular. Had 2 rehearsals with them ready for 1st gig in a months time and discovered the drummer couldnt play the same thing twice - he seemed ok initially and just seemed to throw a wobbler at random points in a song (you know, the old massive tom roll and get back in somewhere else in the song ;-)). My approach is a "play it until we nail it and then move on" sort of thing but theirs was a "never mind, we'll try it next rehearsal cos we're getting bored now" view. They had been together for 4 years rehearsing every 2 weeks. I can cope with flat singers and geetards but the one thing i do need is a solid drummer that i can hook up with.

I've had an Ashdown ABM575 Evo 3 recently and replaced it with the GK MB Fusion as i couldnt get on with the Ashdown sound. The GK is a completely different animal - it lacks the big soft (gooey was a great description Jack) Ashdown sound that i didnt like and couldnt get rid of via the eq on the ABM. It has a much more defined midrange (which i love) and i find it more punchy in the mix. Its also really simple to set up - just increase the contour if you want a more old school mid scoopy sound. I run everything flat with a little extra low mid (sometimes a touch more bass) and the contour off and its spot on at most gigs. ts not so brittle and edgy as the traditional GK heads but you can get close if you want it. Plenty of bass on tap and a tameable treble eq section. I just think its a really versatile head with a great basic sound and less of a one trick pony than the Ashdown which needed extreme eq'ing for my taste. ps I get the impression that Ashdowns work better with "basic" (no offence) basses such as Precisions and Jazzes rather than modern active stuff like my Spectors - maybe thats why i didnt get on with my ABM.

Neither of mine have clubby necks - i came off a skinny Ibanez Sdgr and they felt instantly comfy.

I have a Euro LX4 PJ and its a keeper. Best bass i have owned in 30 years. The neck is not as cramped as an Ibanez SDGR but still quite slim and is effortlessly playable. I believe the necks are made in the USA and exported to Europe to be assembled so youre getting US Spector quality with them. Felt like an old pair of boots from day one. The EMG PJ's are hifi clear but with a grindy quality when you push the tonepump a bit. Its a really hot output so check you have the adjustable trim pot version of the tonepump - some amps arent too happy with it (i run mine at about 80%). Its fine with my GK and Hartke heads but my Cube needs the input gain reduced quite dramatically to avoid overloading. It really shows up differences in string brands - currently loving DR Fat Beams on it. Most people agree the Euros punch well above their weight and arent far off USA NS quality for half the price. That black one looks lovely but he also had an older natural one for about 800 quid i think. It looked great vfm in my opinion but may not have the adjustable tonepump. Take a trip and try them.

[/quote] I had a very similar experience at The American Guitar Centre in Tonbridge. They had/have a lovely USA Spector in there. I went down with a pocketful of cash to try it, took 30 minutes to get the MarkBass Momark demo thingy to actually work (the guy in the shop didnt know anything about it) so i had an amp to play through and then found the bass didnt actually work either. The guy there was completely uninterested and had a "oh well, never mind" sort of attitude. He didnt even suggest they open it up and have a quick look in case it was an obvious problem that could be quickly resolved. I dont think he was the owner though - there was another chap downstairs who was a bit more helpful (or at least chatty). I never went back. I have found DV247, The Bass Gallery in Camden, Gig Gear in Harlow and Bass Central in Florida most excellent though.

Just picked up an aluminium case for my Fusion in Maplins today. Reduced from £35 to £19.99 and a bit tougher than a laptop case. Comes with all the foam. Spare amp and also Hartke VXL di/preamp thingy just in case taken to every gig. Its being professional i think - we're getting paid to do a job and not let anyone down on the night so we cover most potential problem scenarios. Drummer has a spare snare, guitarist has 2 amps in a roadcase and 2 cabs, i have 2 separate amps and cabs in case one blows, we all have a spare guitar. We did a big gig in Cornwall last bank holiday which involved a lot of travelling, big audience, good pay and got to thinking "what if an amp blows at 10pm - we're stuffed!!" so made a few investments since then. Good for peace of mind i think.

Clarky, i work in the smoke a few days a week. I could chuck the GK MB Fusion in the car one day and pop round if you wanted to have a blast on it.
