  1. I went to a niece’s wedding in the summer. The song that got the whole room dancing was unknown to me - the first I hadn’t recognised, let alone played. Apparently it was from Shrek the movie - so I reckon that’s a cert!

pS Just googled and its All Star by Smash Mouth. I had guessed Joe Jackson!

Nice Christmas event last night, another only wanting the 6 piece, male singer not available so the client just asked for one vocalist (my wife) but she managed to navigate the set ok, including a multiple personality disorder version of Fairytale of New York, which went down an absolute storm.

We only had the small HK elements PA so I beefed it up with an actual real amp, must admit it was fun having that at my back. Best bit was having our ‘winter’ drummer back, a really good musician who tour manages for a living so isn’t available all the time. A joyous experience, he can play.

    Is that a G&L bass?

  3. I have an Elf as well.

This is 500w if used with two 8 ohm/ one 4 ohm cabs, Elf is 200w. So it has more headroom.

Feature wise theres no comparison. This is Jaguar, the Elf is Mini Cooper.

The Elf has its own sound, astounding for its size; the MiniMAX can give you many variations as well. The TT boost, punch, midshift and bright buttons are all toneshaping  options.

    Here’s an informative thread:

When she left before our third and last set we breathed a sigh of relief,

only for her to reappear ten minutes later with a pizza from the takeaway over the road!
Just hope she’s not in on our gig in December.

She is annoying, that Marguerita… 😀

  5. Not last night, but yesterday lunchtime, we played our third gig at St Peter’s church in central Bournemouth.

I woke up with no voice thanks to a vicious germ, so the Otis Jay Blues Band did some extended numbers with extra solos to make up for my three songs.

The venue’s promoter (dark shirt) got up to sing a couple too, which always helps. And we broke the ‘last Friday session’ attendance record with 100-plus.

These were very much lauded here back in the day, and I understand that. Fantastic bang for the buck. But its just too much power for what I play, so time to let someone else use and enjoy it.

Or the Queen channel, although they seem to have stopped showing every blo*dy Queen

concert for whole evenings just lately.

The Andre Rieu thing is unbelievably popular, but every time I’ve had the misfortune to see a clip

of any of the shows on Sky Arts they all seem exactly the same, just a different setting. The

massive audiences must mean he’s minted! Good luck to him, he seems to have found a massive

market - seen adverts he’s doing a UK tour in 2024, with good tickets around the £150+ region.

Given the size of the orchestra I reckon that’s not bad when compared to ticket prices these days

for rock and pop bands with half a dozen musicians. Apparently a lot of people in the UK attend

his gigs in Europe on a regular basis too.

Could be a new project for you, Pete - The Andre Rieu Experience…

    And I’m on 10 per cent😂

  8. Just published books on Denmark Street and Immediate Records. Fascinating reading for yourself or a present for a discerning friend. Interestingly, it’s Andrew Oldham on the cover of the Denmark Street book!

My final gig of the week tonight with our acoustic duo at Beverley’s The Sun Inn. We last played there in

July to a full pub and this time it was the same. Plenty of requests, so we played songs including ‘Autumn

Leaves’ through to ‘Good riddance’!  Last time we didn’t manage to do a request for a young lady wanting

some Backstreet Boys and told her we’d do it next time. She was in again tonight so we stuck to our

promise and did ‘I want it that way’! She seemed happy enough but I think it was maybe down to the wine.

Loads of local musos in again tonight which is very flattering albeit a little unnerving, makes us raise our

game though. Used my Ibanez shortie electro acoustic into the PA via my Rumble 100 combo’s DI.

No gigs now till next Sunday in Scarborough, again with the duo.

Out of interest, are you ever asked for any ELO? 😈

Good gig last night at The Leathan in Portlethen with Nine Lives.  We were well looked after, the band area was already cordoned off with a couple of tables which were labelled as reserved for the band (that's a neat idea!) and were swiftly removed to allow us to crack on and get set up.  I went up to order a few cans of Coke for us and the landlord gave us them gratis (and repeated this at half time, came over and offered us a drink, nice one!)

Gig went well, it wasn't super busy and it's an odd layout, it's almost like there are two bars.  I could see a bunch of people through the doorway in the "other" bar enjoying the music but too shy to come through for a dance, ahh well, as long as they're having a good time that's all that matters.  We did have an enthusiastic gang of dancers who were up for most songs, so that helped.  They left about half way through the second set, but were replaced by a couple of guys who were into the heavier stuff we tend to gravitate towards at the end of the night, so it was rewarding work all night.

I played the Harley Benton HB-50 through a Markbass rig (Mini CMD121P IV + New York 121) and it was sounding really good - I actually got compliments on my bassing and its sound from folk.  Had a fine chat at the end with a young bass player who said that my bass tone was really clear and coming through strong.  Oh no, says I, that means the mistakes were coming through loud and clear also :D

Anyhoo, great night, really enjoyed it, and smugly played a bass no-one can buy until 2024.

Nice to see ‘Keith’s cab’ contributing to your sound!👍
