I've heard before that Sabbath (and so presumably H&H too) had a weird bee in their bonnet about keyboard players being visible onstage...didn't Rick Wakeman get stuffed behind a curtain when he toured with them?

Pretty sure Rick only played with them on one studio track and was paid in beer!

Can you really see the man who ate a curry in stage with Yes staying behind a curtain? I can’t!

  2. This is truly a classic thread…

Stop me if I have told this one before… In 1980 I had a band modelled on the Pretenders, whom I had seen and fallen in love with. Our Chrissie was an Australian girl who ended up being deported I believe - anyway she left us looking for a replacement.

We auditioned four girls at Alaska Studios in Waterloo, London. Among them was a lass fresh down from Scotland who was so shy she wouldn’t emerge from the corner of the room at first. Also she had a rather obnoxious boyfriend, as I recall. So we passed.

Months later I saw Eddi Reader on TV backing the Gang of Four, and later still duetting with Annie Lennox in Eurythmics. Bloomin ‘eck!

Bet she has had many a sleepless night regretting my decision😂

I'll be onstage at 4pm on Sunday by the looks of it... a bit of Sandberg action plus a very lovely '71 P I've borrowed for the weekend! If you're about please say hi... looking forward to a few hours wandering about beforehand!

I don’t remember lending you my Fender, Paddy😂

This is what I'm thinking, and why I asked the question.

I have one One10 which I use for home practise, it sits in the corner of the room almost unnoticed, but last week I decided to use it for a rehearsal and I was amazed at just how tight and punchy it sounded, so this got me thinking that if I had two, would they be able to cut through in a average size pub gig?

We play mainly 70's classic rock covers.

Absolutely no problems - even with a small amp like a MB200 or Elf.

The manager of one of the pubs we play in is quite a good artist. She drew a guitar playing devil to put as a poster to promote one of our gigs.

We loved it and asked her if we could use it for our logo. Luckily she agreed.

    A bass-playing angel suggests itself!

What a weird venue. It must have been like playing to an audience peering over a fence! Was it disconcerting?

Third time there so we are used to it!

Admittedly they won’t be dancing on the spot, but when you’re playing to a packed house (plus a few upstairs) it isn’t too much of an issue.

Worst bit is playing strung out in a line. Looking at pics I shoulda maybe been closer to the drummer.

That's an interesting looking venue, Mick, but somehow I suspect the acoustics would have been a bit tricky ?

The bass rebounded a bit, so I might take a second cab to elevate it next time and give a bit more headroom at the same time…

  8. The Otis Jay Blues Band kicked off 2024 at Ringwood Meeting House, Hants. Four new numbers went pretty well, and with 60 paying punters we beat our previous record by 10!

Was told to ‘turn up the bass’ in the interval… understandably so as I was only using an Elf and BF One10. But ‘going active’ on my Sandberg VM4 gave me the bass boost I needed and apparently the second half had more low end.

Talks of three possible new gigs through this, so quite excited!IMG_6765.jpeg.b6b47f62302190cad9ccd8bcbe174eb1.jpegIMG_6766.thumb.jpeg.58bcf008e1c132070f684a838398ecb0.jpeg

Even though I'm in a great band I occasionally struggle with " is the grass greener on the other side" syndrome.  Especially when I see the some of the top teir local cover bands playing the high end stages with high end production, great time slots and higher pay. I'll try to attach a link to the band I wanted yo audition for.

But I'm always told by my close friends

" Daryl, You already in the best band for you". And after I do my research on these bands I find that it's not all peaches and cream.

First of all after they pay for sound and lights the individual members are making no more money than me. All their gigs are not high end and they don't always have large crowds.

At the end of the day if our 2024 summer schedule continues to fill up like it did this week I'll probably feel like a pro anyway.

    Daryl

I reckon you’re better off where you are too. She can sing, but he can’t….
