Final show of the year (and indeed our second ever show!) was at Heartbreakers in Southampton, opening the show.

We had some technical issues with our previous gig (venue's bass head and cab didn't work 5 mins before we were due to start...) and, while it was overall really enjoyable, I wasn't too happy with the sound on-stage. This show was miles ahead sound-wise, and that's because we managed to have a proper 30-40 minute soundcheck before doors. Big shout out to the sound guy Izaak - we're a loud band, so it really helped to have an outside ear to keep us all sounding even and ensure we had enough coming through the monitors so we could hear ourselves properly.

The sound guy took the DI from my Darkglass Element to the PA, and I used the venue's (or maybe the other bands? didn't check!) 210 Ashdown combo for stage monitoring. Sounded great and most importantly I could really hear myself, which felt like a world away from the other show. It's made me think I should invest in some kind of lightweight head/cab/combo for stage monitoring in the future. Done a few hours research and I have complete option paralysis, but that's maybe for another thread...

I genuinely thought we'd be playing to about 3 people as this was a paid event very close to Xmas, so was pleasantly surprised to see a good 25-ish people there. A great local show by Psych Ltd and v well-organised, I'd play again in a heartbeat.

What’s your band and who did you open for?

  2. Bought from Bass Direct when I joined a band that busked. But plans did not work out, so the big advantage of running on AA batteries as well as mains was irrelevant. Apologies, it needs six batteries not four…but at least I got the size right!

It’s a fabulous little amp with potential for acoustic sessions, open mics or rehearsals, not to mention outdoors. I bought it straight after seeing someone play a bass Uke through his, backing a dance team. It really put the power out there.

Comes complete with a Roqsolid bag (bought separately) that makes transport a doddle.

    Specs/Roland blurb:

Stereo power amplifiers and four newly developed 4-inch (10cm) speakers

Eight COSM amps, six digital effects, and chromatic tuner built in

Rhythm Guide function for practical rhythm training

Stereo AUX input for CD/MP3 player, Phones/Recording out

Battery driven (6 x AA, up to 11-hour continuous use), AC adaptor included

    Compact body with carrying strap

The MICRO CUBE BASS RX’s line input lets you plug in a guitar, bass, or microphone. In addition, the stereo AUX input accepts input from an iPod®, a CD player, or musical instrument so you can blend its signal with your own.

With two specially made power amps and four speakers contained in each, the RX amp produces an immersive, stereo sound that must be heard to be believed. The true stereo engine also allows bass tones that defy the size of the cabinet.

  3. I went to a niece’s wedding in the summer. The song that got the whole room dancing was unknown to me - the first I hadn’t recognised, let alone played. Apparently it was from Shrek the movie - so I reckon that’s a cert!

pS Just googled and its All Star by Smash Mouth. I had guessed Joe Jackson!

Nice Christmas event last night, another only wanting the 6 piece, male singer not available so the client just asked for one vocalist (my wife) but she managed to navigate the set ok, including a multiple personality disorder version of Fairytale of New York, which went down an absolute storm.

We only had the small HK elements PA so I beefed it up with an actual real amp, must admit it was fun having that at my back. Best bit was having our ‘winter’ drummer back, a really good musician who tour manages for a living so isn’t available all the time. A joyous experience, he can play.

    Is that a G&L bass?

  5. I have an Elf as well.

This is 500w if used with two 8 ohm/ one 4 ohm cabs, Elf is 200w. So it has more headroom.

Feature wise theres no comparison. This is Jaguar, the Elf is Mini Cooper.

The Elf has its own sound, astounding for its size; the MiniMAX can give you many variations as well. The TT boost, punch, midshift and bright buttons are all toneshaping  options.

When she left before our third and last set we breathed a sigh of relief,

only for her to reappear ten minutes later with a pizza from the takeaway over the road!
Just hope she’s not in on our gig in December.

She is annoying, that Marguerita… 😀

  7. Not last night, but yesterday lunchtime, we played our third gig at St Peter’s church in central Bournemouth.

I woke up with no voice thanks to a vicious germ, so the Otis Jay Blues Band did some extended numbers with extra solos to make up for my three songs.

The venue’s promoter (dark shirt) got up to sing a couple too, which always helps. And we broke the ‘last Friday session’ attendance record with 100-plus.
