Somewhere in Morden if I remember correctly. The "Micky Kemp Band" went out under the name of "Badlands" supporting a Guns and Roses tribute band who where running out of steam, bored and just going through the motions.  You came to talk to Micky about Ryan Adams.

Absolutely right, sir. There’s nothing wrong with your memory!

And this was the book that resulted…

We played this afternoon at the Shropshire Tattoo Show.  In some ways a tough gig, because the audience were there for the ink, not the music, but we were made to feel very welcome and were well looked after, which is always a huge lift.  We played pretty well on a very small stage, despite the room being very hot indeed and the sound was pretty good too.  This was our first gig playing a split set, which meant re-ordering the songs to suit, but I think it worked well.  We got talking to one of the exhibitors who is organising another tattoo show in Wrexham in November - he and his wife loved our act and he asked us if we'd consider playing there.  It's a great feeling getting another booking at a gig, I always feel.

I look very grumpy, but that's just a bad case of RBF!

Can we come up with a set of songs that contain the word tattoo, as in the Pretenders’Tattooed Love Boys’?

  3. Otis Jay Blues Band’s second gig at the Ringwood Meeting House outside Bournemouth brought in 30-odd (odd!) people.

The venue now has an easy-assemble stage that means those in the pews can see us from knees up rather than the waist!

£8 admission shared with the venue, so a good time for a good cause. Playing places like this is a real bonus.

As ever recently, my Flea went through an Elf/BF One10 mini rig. Just about sufficient. 32EABC5F-2116-4BB8-9D8A-7CB685635D10.thumb.jpeg.c7fda2906bbddc46015e4b4a089a2b17.jpeg254B8A83-7EC8-4E66-9C5C-69F9F6852254.thumb.jpeg.cc17db4de358c9c4ce18a848e59f3865.jpegD8400348-F9DB-4E50-B539-58C680CDC94D.thumb.jpeg.3be9dda6913cd93fa114e440f76c8b90.jpeg2474C685-0FB4-4A8C-8DBD-240D90E63361.thumb.jpeg.9a251a62da8ea61285e24c807229f37f.jpeg

Never had any ambitions to become professional, just not good enough and I wanted a steady career.  I'm probably a better player now than I was 60 years ago.

By a strange quirk I ended up playing for a songwriter in the early 2000s and went with him to Austin, Texas to record an album.  Took 2 weeks leave.  One of the best holidays I've ever had but 3 months later I was made redundant and that was the end of the day job.  Played for him again in 2005 and as I had no day job I suppose I was professional as I had no main income.  Did 80 gigs that year but made no money.

He was never signed however still writing, gigging and recording.  Won't put his music on on-line platforms. Sells CDs to pay for beer and holidays.

Remember seeing you with Micky Kemp👍

Similar guitar style and sound on Perfect by Fairground Attraction, and also Faith by George Michael.

    Same bloke?

    Faith: Hugh Burns

The song began life in May 1987 at PUK Studios, Denmark with Michael doing a 2-bar LinnDrum loop and Hugh Burns playing the Bo Diddley-style acoustic rhythm guitar part on a nameless metal-bodied acoustic.

    Perfect: Mark Nevin

Superstar by the Carpenters. A cover of Delaney and Bonnie's "Groupie (Superstar)"

They took all the rough edges off, changed the title and the lyrics and hence the meaning of the song. Turned it into a MoR song with no message. Even Karen Carpenter's voice was not enough to save it!

With respect, John, I couldn’t agree with you less. Though logic is on your side it is, for me, one of those songs that sends chills.

Maybe if i had heard the original first I wouldn’t think that way.

Awaiting the Poole Town choir’s version of   ‘Tubthumper’😁

  7. Our second gig at an amazing venue, a former Methodist meeting house sitting pretty in the midst of a shopping centre that grew up around it!

It’s difficult, as we usually play free admission venues. But the £8 is split between us and the venue. Beer is club prices and is delivered direct to the pew.

Starts 7.30 and all over by 9.30 so not a late Friday night at all.

We - Otis Jay Blues Band - got 49 paying customers last time. You could be the difference🙏IMG_4792.thumb.jpeg.b971ea02d5ab9a791ca88316897093e8.jpeg
