  1. Thanks for all the info chaps. I don't know why they chose this key and I told them it sounded very strange. But I did get the look from a couple of them, you know the one that says, " what do you know, you're just the bass player".
  2. Looking for a bit of help with All My Loving by the Beatles. All these years of bass playing and I have never played this number, however I was asked to learn it for last nights rehearsal. So over the weekend I dug out my copy of the Beatles 62-66 and had a listen and then tried to copy maccas walking line. Can't say that I nailed it note for note, but it was fairly close. My take on it was that the chord progression in the verse was F sharp minor, B, E, Csharp minor, A, F sharp minor, D, B, F sharp minor, B, E, C sharp minor, A, B, E, stop. (sorry that was a bit long winded) Anyway, got to the rehearsal and I was told to do it in D and off we went. I got some strange looks and realised I wasn't playing what they were. This is where I am a bit confused... Won't list all the chords again but transposing from F sharp to D< I thought the progression would now be Dm, G, C, Am, F, Dm, Bb, G etc. Whereas they were playing D, Em A D Bm G Em C Em etc. If you've bothered to read this far, what do you think? Am I missing something obvious or have the guitarist got it wrong? Cheers, all the best Gary
  3. Thanks for that. I will check out the sites you recommended.
  4. My new Squier modified Jazz suffers quite a loud buzz, unless I back off the tone control, so guess it's either a pick up issue or lack of shielding. I am thinking that the shielding would be the obvious first step. So I would be grateful for advice as to whether to go for screening paint or foil/tape. Best brands to look for and stockists. Thanks, all the best Gary.
  5. thanks Doc. Will have a proper read of the sticky. Cheers
  6. Nice one. I'm planning to do the same sort of mods to my new Squier Jazz, so maybe seeking your advice if you don't mind. I find it a bit unerving when first approaching a bass armed with a screw driver. Yesterday I made a tentative start by putting on strap locks. All went smoothly and the screws seemed to bite in properly. Looking for a bridge replacement next, either gotoh or bad ass, whichever is the most straight forward to install. Must admit I don't fancy filing the grooves on the badass.
  7. I've got the same amp. On the last gig I played I added my Hartke 2 x 10", which is rated at 150 watts @ 8 ohms. It worked very well and certainly gave me a cut through sound, which was much needed to keep up with keyboards and five guitars. I would prefer a trace 2 x 10", but the Hartke has the added advantage of being very light, which is a relief after having carried the Trace combo out of the car and into the venue. All the best Gary.
  8. Looks like it's a mod worth doing then, will have to start looking on Ebay. Hey Sticker, Don't know about the hum thing, didn't notice when I tried it out in the shop and haven't played it amped up at home yet. Will get back to you.
  9. Thanks Buzz. Sorry, I promise not to mention Coventry again, unless to give it praise. All the best Gary.
  10. hey chaps, have I been sent to coventry, or was the post just hellish boring. Not complaining but this is the first time I've not had a response to a question or a posting. all the best Gary.
  11. I had a trip over to Peach Guitars in Braintree on Saturday. What a pleasant experience. It made such a change to deal with friendly, helpful staff. They were attentive but did not pressurise me and they gave me a good deal on my purchases. Recent guitar shop experiences have been a bit depressing. Staff that grunt a hello at best, or at the worst ignore me and carry on chatting to their crowd of cronies. My wife treated me as a 50th birthday pressie, to a Squier Modded Jazz and my daughter a padded gig bag. Over the past few weeks I have tried a couple of these basses and couldn't understand what all the praise was about, as they were not very playable and the setups awful. The one that Peach had was a different beast altogether, nicely set up and no protruding screws on the bridge. I made the mistake of trying it through a mark bass combo, so now I'm gassing for one of those as well. I know that a few of you have fitted Baddass bridges. Interested to know if this is a worthwhile mod and worth the expense? Anyway, I can thoroughly recommend Peach Guitars, not a huge bass range, but the ones I tried were all nicely set up. All the best, Gary.
  12. Wow, that's a pleasure to behold. Don't think I could bring myself to sell that one. Just wish I could afford it. Best of luck, can't imagine it will be on here for very long. All the best Gary
  13. Found this book in the library a couple of days back, by Jim Roberts. Any of you read it? I've not finished it yet, but it's a very entertaining read and not quite what you might expect from the title.
  14. When I started playing in the 70's my influences at the time were John Paul Jones Chris Squire Andy Fraser John Entwhistle The bass player from Wishbone Ash, only the name escapes me at the moment.
  15. [attachment=6357:musical_...ents_006.jpg][attachment=6357:musical_...ents_006.jpg]My request for a Mark Bass was also turned down. But she is right really. I tried to justify it with the bad back argument, but as was pointed out to me, I'm only averaging a few gigs a year. But I do play a bass or two every day.
  16. Thanks chaps. I've currently got four fretted basses, so maybe a fretless would make sense. Just not sure if I'm up for the challenge of learning to play one at the moment. Tried out another Squier modified Jazz yesterday in a shop in Harlow. It was better than the one I tried a few weeks back, but still didn't really do it for me. I just hate the protruding saddle screws, they are quite sharp. Is that one of the reasons people fit the badass bridges, or is that purely for sonic improvement? Think the Marcus Miller one is not within budget, but like the look of it. The USA S1 would be great if I could find one at the right price. Will keep looking. Thanks again.
  17. Andy Frazers bass playing in Free, just perfect.

    Cubasis

Thanks will give it a try tomorrow.
  19. There are so many variations, will have to get out and try a few. Any more advice/recomendations appreciated. Cheers, Gary.

    Cubasis

Thanks for that chaps. Suspected I was missing the obvious, I am indeed using XP. OldG how do I sort the compatibility mode? Would like to try that first, before looking at reaper. All the best.
  21. Welcome Haimsey. Enjoy the site, be warned it's a bit addictive, just like collecting basses is. Nice collection. All the best Gary.

    Cubasis

Illness is keeping me housebound at the moment and yesterday in an attempt to stop climbing the walls, thought I would install Cubasis. Typically, I can't do it. I suspect I am missing something obvious and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. It's not a ripped off copy, geniune article that I purchased a few years back. I had it installed on my preious computer and all was well. Yesterday when trying to install I had problems. Wavelab lite installed ok. Master unit istalled ok. But not Cubasis VST. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Gary.
  23. Very very nice. I really fancied one of the SMJ basses, but the one I tried in a local shop was really orrid. Maybe I'll look elsewhere and see if I can find a good one. Nearly everyone seems to like them. Thanks.
  24. Sorry, maybe should have put this in the bass guitars section, feel free to move it.
  25. There I was flopped out on the settee last night watching the box, when the good wife suddenly piped up from the other settee, "How do you fancy a Jazz Bass for your birthday?" All in a quandry now, but the sort of quandry to enjoy for a few days. Don't know whether to go for a fretted or fretless, jap, mexican, old or new. Guess I had better find out what the budget is first. Any thoughts on which to avoid? That might help to narrow it down a bit. Cheers, all the best Gary.
