1.
Every time they mention tinnitus on TV, they talk about a loud whooshing noise, not a whining noise. I'm listening to my WHEEEEE noise right now, I've got two notes, one of them too high to guess the note. I also heard that these whining noises are your body's natural sound...think of all those moving parts in your body, they can't be silent can they?

One of the things about those anechoic chambers is apparently being able to hear the blood swooshing about in your brain, and the pulse of it all changing as you think about different stuff.
These could both apply to me! I had Tinnitus before I started playing, only mild. I didn't start out in really loud bands, we had 100watt amps back then lol. My real problems came after doing the big gigs with massive backlines. No one thought about ear protection then! I've had a burst eardrum and am now partly deaf. I do have special ear protection now. I guess I've had it so long now I just ignore it most of the time.
2.
Im currently playing round with nickle round strings as I want more growl and less zing. I have only used the Legacy sets from StringsDirect and they seem to be pretty good, I have a set of Picato nickles to trial. Has anyone got suggestions for me to try?
I heard a rumour that Lagacy strings are made by Rotosound. I did try a set but didn't like them. I prefer the zing myself, maybe someome here can help. Ellie
3. I always fancied a full double bass, but it just isn't practicle for me. They are a real pain to transport as well. The sound though......
4. Loads more useful info thanks again always good to know we are using.
5. Big thanks for all your replies guys. guess I'm gonna have to get hold of a few different sets. I have tried a few over the years but always ended up back with the Rotos. Time to try something different methinks. I use flats on my fretless didn't really like them on fretted basses. Spike I used Rotos on my Ricky for ten years of gigging without serious fret ware. Ellie
6.
Hey Ellie, you are doing a gig just up the road from me on Wednesday [Haystack] - I might pop in and see the band. Dean Markley SR2000's Stainless Steel Rounds 47/67/87/107 with a custom 135 B string. Fretted & Fretless. Nice and tight, great for finger and slap. Very meaty & Zingy, and last quite a while. Bit pricey, but have been using them for a while and love them. Garry
Hi Garry We're running the jam night, come along with your bass and sit in, if you don't feel like playing just pop along and say hi.
7. Hi all I suspect this has been done before, so humour me please lol. I was chatting with a couple bass player mates last night and we started talking about this subject which got me thinking (big mistake). I've been using Rotosound strings since I first started playing many years ago. I sometimes use Elites & mostly 40s. I've always liked the clanky sound they produce, and the price. The downside is they can be a bit rough when sliding. So what do you use & why? Ellie
8. Hiya JBR Like the others have said ask away, I'm sure you'll find plenty of useful info here. Ellie
9.
Hi Ellie! Yup, another Warwick fan here - they're small and sound great, even the cheapo versions I have If I compare my list of gear in my first post with that in my present sig, I notice I must have given in to a certain amount of GAS during these 12 months... But it's obviously not over - GAS is never really over!
They are great basses. They can feel a bit heavy though, my fretless certainly is after a night of gigging lol. I nearly decapitated my guitarist with the Buzzard once! I agree GAS is never really over
10. Hiya Bluejay Thought I'd seen a lot of posts lol. Glad to see you like Warwick basses Ellie
11. Hiya Zog Bass is the way lol. Most of us do alot of looking before we commit ourselves. Depends how far you want to take it I suppose. Good hunting Ellie
12. Hiya Sirenboy See you around the site...having a gas Ellie
13. Loads of great comments here! I'm known as a bass player, I'm asked to do deps as a bass player, studio work as a bass player, guest spots as a bass player. I do play guitar and mandolin sometimes, but bass is what I'm known for! Not sure that answers the qustion though. I suppose it's when you first get acknowledged by the public in a band really, otherwise you simply fall into the 'bedroom player' slot. Ellie
14. Hi I tend to play my own style on most covers, leaving the bits in that matter, like the solo in 'Alright Now'! To me it's all about how we feel the song. I'm actually better known for my bass improvisation now and people come to see the band partly for that. We've even added a bass solo to 'Badge' which goes down well! If I were doing a tribute I'd play it as near as possible to the original, allowing for the dynamics of the band. Playing original songs allows freedom to express yourself. If I'm asked to play something in a certain way I will but for me it's about putting my own stamp on a song. Most covers have set bits you have to play anyway so you do need to get those right. One of the worst covers I heard was this guy in a 60s covers band playing root notes to 'My Generation'! I just wanted to grab it and show him how. Ellie
15.
Hi, thanks for the welcome. My Mrs wouldn't agree with you about buying more basses. I have to pretend I only have a few. I have them all over. Even got two in a reording studio in Belgium she doesn't know about!!.
Hiya hiding basses, tut, tut lol. Westone Thunder! Never owned one of those, found a couple on Ebay recently, but didn't follow them. You're right they are heavy, but they did have good tone for their day. Hope you find a good one soon. cheers Ellie
16.
Hello everyone, my name is Rob and I'm an addict...of bass
I like this Welcome to BC Ellie
17. Hiya welcome. Cool bass Ellie
18. Hiya Welcome. I sold my very first bass, wish I hadn't. If it was me I'd sell the violin bass, if you decide you want one again get a Hofner. You could just keep them all and buy another lol. Ellie
19. Hiya Jim Welcome. Jamming is good, it takes time to get those licks. Keep at it and you'll get there, Ellie

Hello

Hiya Lee Welcome hope you enjoy it here Ellie
21. Hi just been reading this thread. Seems to me there are many factors to think about, it's never clear cut. Years ago I was playing in an originals band, We played a number of short gigs for nothing to get the band known. We offset the cost by doing paid gigs. I'm like most musicians, I simply love playing, but as it's all I do I need to earn so apart from charity gigs, and the odd festival I only do paid ones now. Although I have been known to help out friends sometimes for fuel money. I don't have an issue with bands playing for nothing, though I know some who do. I do think that musicians should be paid, after all even as a hobby it's not cheap these days (if it ever was).
22. Hiya, welcome.Go for it. Nice bass to play I have one, great neck! ENJOY. Ellie
23. Hi Rob good luck. You'll find loads of help here. Ellie
