1.
Preston is nice and close, when are coming up there? its not really a case of "too soon" just has to be a weekend (busy this one though!)
Well, it was going to be around Xmas which is quite a few months away. The other option is meeting up one weekend half way if you are up for that.
 2.
Im in Rochdale nr oldham, tell you what, Ive got to go to work just now and wont be back till tomorrow but thats a good thinking period. we'd have to work out where to meet up and "try out" and that, trouble is I work some insane hours but allways get school holidays(next one 6 weeks away-can you/do you want to wait that long?) pm me or Ill check back on this thread tomorrow cheers! Witterth
Yep, in no hurry at all so no problem if you want to have a think about it. I may be up in Shropshire this weekend but if thats to soon, then around Xmas time, I plan to go to my sisters at some point and she lives in Preston. So no rush. Like I say, I did really want to try a 2EQ but will take a 3EQ. Have a think and let me know and we can go from there.
 3.
I have black stingray 3ry old and very mint condition ( out of case maybe twice ) brought back myself from america. dunno what you think? its 3band eq and I'd like to keep my musicman case. hard to know what to do... your's does look nice but then.. so does mine... where are you? Im "oop north" always liked natual finish ones...what to do...aghhh
No worries about keeping your case. I also have a Musicman case which I would like to keep. I am down south. Typical hey :) Where abouts oop north are you? Have a think about it and let me know. Definately interested.
 4. I have a beautiful natural 3EQ Musicman Stingray with maple neck from 2005. It is in mint condition and plays beautifully. However, I now own a Fender USA 75 Jazz in natural so I fancy changing the natural Stingray for a coloured one. I would also really like to try a 2EQ stingray if possible. So if anyone has a 2EQ Stingray in black or Teal with maple neck and would like to swap for a 3EQ natural Stingray with maple neck then give me a shout. I would consider 3EQ if no 2EQ's are available. I would also consider Pacific Burst or Cherry Burst if either of these are offered. Please note that my Stingray is in mint condition so I would like one of similar quality. Let me know what you have.
 5. Fender bassed basses for me. I love Precisions but I prefer the look and tone of the Jazz and normally lean towards one of them. The Musicman Stingray also is a favourite.
 6.
This is a really lovely bass - I only sold it as part of my drive to get my collection of basses down into single figures. I gave it a 9.5 because there is a single blemish, which I didn't point out to Michael. He contacted me a couple of weeks ago because after owning the bass for two months he still couldn't find it! I had it strung with Peacock Blue strings when Michael bought it. They may not be to everybody's taste, but they look (IMHO) just stunning on this bass. They also sound just as good as any other DR strings. The US-made Hipshots are far nicer than the Korean copies. As to reaching single figures ... erm ... I didn't. Got down to 10 basses for two weeks, but now back up to 12. Dang!
I really liked the DR Peacock Blue String. I used to use Elites for about 20 years but fell in love with the DR strings. So much so that I have since re-strung her with another set and will include your old set as a spare. They seem to have a really nice tension to them. I will be stringing my other basses with them in future although maybe not in the peacock blue colour. Not quite sure it would look as good on a natural bass
 7.
If all these Laklands DJ weren't in Lake Placid Blue, one would have been mine.
I could'nt decide on blue or black when I was looking. Black looks nice but I was worried it looked a bit to much death metal with a black scratchplate. I liked the blue but was a bit worried it was going to be too light and too much like the Fender baby blue but in the flesh its not. Its a deep strong blue so no worries.

 9. I am selling my Lakland Darryl Jones in Lake Placid Blue. The bass is in mint condition and used to below to Happy Jack who rated the bass as near-perfect condition at 9.5. The bass has Lakland pups and has had the tuners upgraded from the Korean-licensed Hipshot tuners to the genuine US-made Hipshot ones, which are much nicer, and includes a D-Tuner. The Korean-licened hipshot tuners will be included in the sale. The bass is strung with a brand new set of DR Extra Life strings in Peacock Blue and comes with a used set also as spares. I will also throw in a gig bag. I bought this bass back in June from Happy Jack and paid £700 for it. I would like to get the same back for it so a firm £700 I am afraid. The bass does sound and play beautifully and I am genuinely sad to see her go. I am based in Camberley in Surrey and any trial is welcome. Happy to courier at buyers cost. Please feel free to email for more photos or any questions.
 10.
I just wish you hadnt posted both those pics next to each other like that!!, first change trousers, then sell liver!!
hahahaha sorry :)
 11.
Thanks for this review. I love the Lakland 5 String DJ, the neck especially. I did notice its a different Jazz tone to what Im used to, but something about that neck on the 5's is incredible. I am a Fender nut, but I really don't think their 5 string bass necks can compete, which is a shame I really want one of the USA 75 Reissue Jazz Basses, but I wish they were available in different colours. I already have 2 natural instruments (MM EB and a USA Telecaster Guitar) so now I want something different colour wise, which is the blue of the Lakland DJ Hmm...I just cant find another 5 string Jazz that suits me, the Sadowsky really wasnt my cup of tea.
Your welcome for the review. I have just been comparing both basses again and I am even more convinced by the Fender. The neck really does suit me better and so does the tone. I am also finding I am less accurate with the Lakland and have to work harder due to the thinner neck. So its time to sell the Lakland. Sad to see her go but its just not for me. Looks like its time to admit that Fender is the one of only bass for me. As for colour, I know what you mean. I have a natural Stingray and now a natural Jazz. I seem to be drawn to them. If I could, I would change the Stingray but not sure to what and the natural does look great. Maybe a black Stingray with maple neck would be nice.
 12.
Hah, chance'd be a fine thing!!!
Oh I wish. In fact, I really think this thread needs a picture of Sarah and I am sure you would agree
 13.
What's Big Mike going to say when he sees you're not in the store?!!!
HAHAHAHA thats ok, Morgan will make an excuse for me If you look at the other picture I posted, I am wearing my Chuck shirt and tie. So, Sarah and Casey will look after me, especially Sarah
 14. Just want to update this thread. I have owned a Lakland Skyline Darryl Jones for a good few months now and generally been very happy with it. The build quality is excellent. You can't fault it in anyway and it looks superb. It also sounds really nice. The neck is nice and thin and pretty flat and the bass hangs well. Its a great sounding and playing jazz bass. However, there has also been a few things that I have not been so happy about. Yes it sounds very nice, but the tone is also very deep. Very bass heavy and I have always struggled to get a bit of sparkle out of it. I even got a comment at my first gig with it saying it sounded really nice but it needs to cut through more and this was with me trying to cut through. The other issue with it is its a very rigid bass. I have an ESP Jazz bass which seems to flex and move with you as a player. It feels soft to play and moulds into you. The Lakland feels really stiff and rigid and does not seem to flex. I feel like I am attached to a pole. Its also very heavy at about 10lbs. I have just recently got an Fender American 75 Re-Issue jazz and it is a totally different bass to the Lakland. Sound wise it is excellent. Lots of attack, punch and sparkle. It still has the bottom end but a much more balanced sound compared to the lakland. Its also very light or much lighter than the Lakland. It has a very different shape neck and feel which seems to be more to my liking. It also feels flexible and softer to play and I felt at one with it from the word go. Fel wise, it reminds me very much of my 1977 Fender Precision which was my favourite bass ever. However, quality wise, its not a scratch on the Lakland. It looks rough and ready and nowhere near the quality of the Lakland. It really does look like a workhorse. So when it comes down to it, both basses are excellent but very different. Tonally and feel, the Fender just suits me better. I would not say the Fender is a better bass, not by a long shot. I would probably go as far as saying the Lakland is a better bass but it has some characteristics that just don't suit me. This is a real shame as I love the Lakland and its a top bass but it does not suit me and I may consider selling it. I never thought this would happen as I love the Lakland brand but I'm not sure I will play her. The Fender just feels right and suits me tonally.
 15.
Wow, i really thought you were like in your 20's, must have been your previous avvy, good work!
HAHAHA nah I just act like it sometimes :)
 16.
Its the angle between the nut and where the string meets the post of your tuners. If its to "shallow" (ie the string is wound up the post instead of down), then the nut doesn't "break" the string enough and your left with the string making a weird noise. Does that make sense?
Cool, yes makes sense thanks but my strings always wind downwards towards the bottom of the tuner.
 17.
I'd go with Skank and say break angle over the nut isn't sharp enough. Had the same thing myself. Makes a really weird noise.
Whats break angle Could you explain this please.
 18. I think I have the same problem with my DR Peacock Blue strings but on the A string. Its certainly loose in the nut and I am wondering if this is vibrating.
 19. One from last weekend. Found an excuse to use my Stingray. First time I have used it and not sure when I will get to use her again. Plus one from the week before using my Lakland Darryl Jones. Not sure when I will use that again either as I just bought a Fender 75 re-issue which feels amazing.
 20. The best bit is guess who's getting his Fender 75 RI??? Yep .... me. My dream bass finally :) Everyones happy, apart from my Darryl Jones who I guess is feeling a little threatened. Awaits Dave_Bass5 to fall off his chair at the shock of me buying a Fender Jazz and not playing my Lakland
 21.
Different basses on different albums... this isn't comprehensive, but to summarise, the early albums, up to Mother's Milk were mostly a Spector NS4, BSSM was mostly a Wal (with a 5-string Stingray on two tracks), One Hot Minute was mostly an Alembic Epic (apart from Aeroplane, which was obviously a Stingray), Californication & By The Way were pretty much all the Flea Bass, and Stadium Arcadium was the Flea Bass and a '62 Jazz with flats.
Thanks, I am quite surprised by that list, especially the Spector, Wal and Alembic. I wonder why he never used the Spector live.
 22.
Just as a matter of interest, in your avatar, Flea is using his Modulus Flea Bass (now known as the Funk Unlimited)... he hasn't used Stingrays for years, and rarely ever recorded with one.
Out of interest, what did Flea usually record with?
 23. For looks and to some degree to play, then a Musicman Stingray but the sound lets it down for me. As an overall, then some kind of Jazz, either my ESP 400 Series Jazz, my Lakland Darryl Jones Jazz, or fingers crossed soon to be Fender USA 75 Re-issue Jazz.
 24.
*slaps forehead* Of course! How could I forget them, probably my favourite 80s band. "Spirit of Eden", "The Colour of Spring" - brilliant albums. And their music has aged very well, especially compared to other artists from that period.
I adore Talk Talk. The Colour of Spring is one of my top 5 albums and one of the few albums I can listen through from start to finish and not want to skip a single song.
