1. Just another 'well done' from a fellow Ric owner (maybe there are more of us on here than we think?). Shame the guy had to sell it for so little in desperation but it was his decision and your lucky day. I don't play mine as much as it deserves but when i take it to jam sessions it usually gets played by about 4 other people drooling over it, and it's only a bog standard 4003. They just have a certain presence about 'em...
2. I used to be able to play most of it, it was always the bit where the bass is doing the run very tight with the drums just before the main riff that I found a struggle. When I saw a proper transcription I realised why - a *lot* of notes in a short space of time, very easy to slurr them together. On the subject of Rush, has anyone seen the tribute band Bravado? I'm considering seeing them tonight in Sutton-in-Ashfield, wondered what anyone thought, the clips on their web site are poorly recorded so hard to tell...
3. With those lipstick pickups I'm guessing it's not first choice for aggressive slapping!
4. Well I haven't played a note in weeks and I've just been coerced into doing a set at a works internal activity day with the in house band I started off with. Our original female vocalist has since moved on so I'll probably have to carry all the singing for the whole set as the rest are even worse at it than me. I'm persuading them to keep it short, maybe just half an hour over their lunch break. Most of the old set will be out of the window as I won't be able to sing it!
5. After hearing Macca do 'drive my car' at that Liverpool gig on TV a while back I decided to learn that, no real reason. I realised he does a similar thing with that line as he does for back in the USSR
6. Also think of the resale value - spend £500 on the Tokai and what would it be worth if you didn't like it and passed it on compared with, say, what you'd get back from resale of a real ric you had got on eBay for £700.
7. I hope most of them are a better build quality than the one in the harmony revue. They might not be real ric money but they are still in the £500 range. If I spent that on a bass in which I had to replace Pu's and redo finishing, screws etc and a month of getting a remotely decent setup I'd be unimpressed to put it mildly.
8. Surprised no one has come in yet for the Nottm one, there has been a music store on that site for a long time, there's no other really wide ranging music shop in the city centre apart from an overpriced and understocked place in one of the shopping centres. SC was far from perfect but had the biggest selection in the city.
9. That happened with Ripper Owens in Judas Priest as well, formed the basis of the Mark Wahlberg film 'Rock Star' which comes up on TV from time to time.
10. I notice all the files at mysongbook are still disabled - are they ever going to get round this supposed copyright infringement business? I'm sure it must be affecting sales of GP software by now. Does anyone have a more recent archive than Jan 2006 (which is what I have though the section for letter V seems to be missing)? There must be loads of new additions since then but inaccessible by mysongbook - other sites less bothered about the IP problems?
11.
It's never ceased to amaze me why Glenn is slated by the Purple faithful as some sort of anti-christ. It's not even as if that band isn't prone to the odd line up change. Maybe it says more about one dimensional thinking in the fan base than it does about Glenns (too short) contributions.
To be fair it was Glenn and Tommy Bolin's drugs excesses that finally drove DP into the ground in the mid 70's so I can understand some fans opinions, though musically it was probably running out of steam by then anyway. Seen Glenn play solo a couple of times and he seems very genuine and learned from his earlier mistakes in life. I think he just has one of those naturally addictive personalities and has to be a bit careful of the people he hangs out with. Always thought he was a bit underrated as a bass player because his voice is so strong and tends to grab the attention.
12. Speaking of backlines. Went a jam/open mic type night the other day. The house band had a bass player using some very nice kit, didn't look in detail but mostly ampeg stuff, probably about £2K's worth. I eventually got given the nod to run through a couple of songs and was interested to hear what my US jazz would sound like through that sort of rig. Made my way to the stage and...a farty little ashdown combo had mysteriously appeared. Only the house band's bassist got to use the decent stuff!
13.
Ah! Forgot about those. Cost me £400. There was a set on EvilBay last week - not sure if they sold or not. I've just bought an Oberheim Matrix module - closest thing I've found in a midiable synth to the Taurus sound - hook my Roland pedals up and it does the job fairly well.
Did you try the 'vintage synth' card available for Roland's own sound modules? I thought the Moog patches on that were quite good. Do you use the PK5 pedals? I have a set of those.
14. +1 for Guitarpro, the file for this song is very accurate IIRC. PM sent to Steve.
15. Those of you who like Gustafson's playing and dabble in a bit of jazz rock, check out the Ian Gillan Band albums 'Clear Air Turbulence' and 'Scarabus'.
16. Might be bringing the tone down a bit but I didn't see any numbers - how much did you sell it for?
17. I appreciate it, just don't want to play it. Same goes for reggae and a lot of jazz too actually. Don't feel embarassed to have personal preferences.
18. A lot of this is just bravado - ask him to send you the ACTUAL set list from their last 3 gigs, I'd bet that all 30 songs don't feature on all 3 put together never mind an individual gig. I was in your situation once, I was emailed a list 'to be getting on with' of 42 songs, we never played nearly half of them live at all! As others have said, the 3 chord chug-a-long stuff like 'Alabama' give least priority to, no one will be bothered if you are just banging out root notes on those but as I said try to prioritise on those that really will figure in the final set list, some of these bands don't change theirs from one year to the next!
19. Looks like I now have visitors staying over that weekend so no go for me, hope it works out though guys.
20. I have an older, more basic vs of that little Korg tuner in Rich's post. Never let me down yet, battery lasts forever, fits into your back pocket. Does a decent job of semitone flat tunings. Keep thinking of getting a pedal one but I always had a spare bass at gigs so even if a bass went out of tune mid set (none of mine ever did) I always had a backup anyway.

Check out Purpendicular from '96, first studio album featuring Steve Morse. Well worth a listen.
22. Bought some gear from Simon at the last bassbash, everything seems fine so far. One item was a 4U Warwick rockcase and he went to the trouble of finding keys for it and posted them on. Also had a keyboard from him in the past which was delivered to my door, top bloke.

Don't forget there are some good tunes from the reunion era and after as well - Perfect Strangers is a good one from the 80's. If you have a really good guitarist you might want to have a crack at some of the Steve Morse era stuff too, but no one in the audience will know it!
24.
Nice guitar playing, dull song, dreadful singer..... sorry, I just DON'T get it....
I'm with you on this one, always found them wildly overrated. OK computer remains one of my most disappointing purchases of all time having read and heard good things about it and the band in advance.
25. If it's local I feel almost compelled to come along even though it's so soon after the Northampton one. It seems all my gear has been already duplicated in other people's posts so no idea what to bring, I guess a few dups won't do any harm. If it's upstairs maybe a good idea if people keep rigs small?
