1.
It's a sweet looking bass, I'd love the chance to play it some day. That, and the Horsey bloke's one.
I hardly use the stringray at the moment so I'm actually open to sensible offers on it, but not desperate to sell.
2.
How did the East and the Nordstrand compare with the original electronics on your bass? Edit: Reason I ask is that they're both modelled (IIRC) on the pre-EB circa 1979 stingray electronics... your bass looks to be around about that age.
My bass came with non original electronics when I bought it I'm afraid. The bass is a 79 but there was a 1991 pre and PU in place. I thought it sounded a bit 'brittle' so I sold the modern electronics and bought the Nordstrand and JE pre. If I'm brutally honest to my ears (not a stingray expert) there isn't a massive difference. But as I said in my post I think it sounds slightly 'warmer' with maybe a more rounded tone than it used to. Not a huge difference. I was hoping to bring it along to a bassbash some time to compare alongside a genuine late 70's ray. Just been too busy to make the last couple.
3. Heart Of The Sunrise Yours Is No Disgrace Both songs by Yes, both around 10 mins and both have basslines which vary in style as the tracks progress. Worth a listen.
4. I like the look of those mod'd P Basses in the new Squier series (looks like a tele bass).
5. Harsh as it sounds, sell the Yamaha *and* the Vintage. This leaves you with a) money to build on and the motivation to add to it (part time job etc) then buy something that's a step up quality wise from your previous. Moving merely sideways on the quality ladder can be quite frustrating.
6. Didn't do my first gig until mid 30's (that's *my* mid 30's, not mid 1930's ^_^ ) as I was convinced I simply wasn't up to standard. Been gigging on and off ever since and regret not taking the plunge much sooner. Never too late mate.
7. I replaced the pre on my stingray with a John East and the PU with a Nordstrand. Work quite nicely together, bit 'warmer' sound than the modern electronics I thought. Your new colour's not a million miles away from what someone had done to mine, they just didn't make a very good job of it on mine (very orange peely up close and paint drips!) . Doubt I'll have it refin'd though:
8. Thanks for the warning. I went to check the venue out at the weekend, it's that funny shaped room at the back. With the gear we have we'll struggle to all fit on the carpet though. There was a 3 piece playing heavy rock and the bass player was using a 4X12 with some huge old amp head ! At least they have their own lighting rig which should cut down the amount of stuff we will take.
9. Chic, Cream, Who, Chilis, Rush, Yes, Beatles for a start...
10. Quite agree. More to the point, CS sounds like CS when he picks up virtually every bass he plays. More evidence that it's the way he plays and his rig/fx set up that gives him his sound rather than just the instrument. I can get a closer sound to CS than on that youtube clip with my regular 4003 and a bit of tweaking around with my set up. I recall when I got my Hartke Bass Attack there is a list of suggested knob settings in the manual, one of them is called 'roundabout' and with the 4003 sounded quite close to CS's sound.
11. This is from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Performer_Bass
12. Unfortunately I don't live close enough to East Anglia to have seen Clive's band but listening to the mp3 samples on their web site (which always sound worse than the actual live sound) I'd say your emailer's a complete dick. My soon to be defunct band play similar stuff and we usually go down fine even in fairly 'straight' venues, though a regular poster on this forum thought we were basically sh*t without seeing us in the flesh.
13. But blondes have more fun, so for the more mature members here... http://www.kdsongs.com/html/ronphotos7.html
14. Guitarist in my current band has decided to throw in the towel to pursue other heavier material. Rather than recruit someone new we've pretty much decided to knock it on the head and go our separate ways. Final gig will be at the Bell Vue in Nottm on Sun 21st Oct. Anyone fancying a laugh more than welcome to come along. So I'll be looking for new employers once I (hopefully) finally get to move house this year. I think I'm going to bide my time and wait for the right project to come up rather than just take the first thing going. Hence I might not be around the forum quite so much (in fact my postings have been very sporadic in the last month or two anyway).
15. Sheffield was about 7:45 start, played till nearly 9pm. Break for 20 mins then back on until 11pm. I think they follow a pretty strict schedule. They were in the back of the merc hire cars zooming away from the venue long before the rest of us got to our cars! I doubt Wembley will open so close to show time, expect doors open nearer 6:30 than 7:30.
16. Also anyone notice that they seem to have dropped the tuning on Circumstances ? (changes basses for it), presumably Geddy's voice can't quite get that any more (used to do the same with 2112). Here it is in all its original shrill glory: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49q59A8OhM8
17. Well since someone started a thread for the last two shows I thought I'd better stick one in for Sheffield. Interesting set list (though still plenty of the same songs done on the Feedback tour there was enough 'new' old stuff to keep me interested). I think they could have dropped a couple from the new album at the start of the 2nd set or replaced them with alternatives from S&A. Doing 5 in a row from a good but not exceptional album was pushing it a bit I thought. The main thing that niggled was the bass sound. Pedals way too high in the mix and drowning out the bass guitar mostly. I don't know if it's his new 'flamenco' style of playing, the mix he's telling the crew to give him or what but in a big shed like Hallam Arena you pretty much heard only his low notes, 90% of the mid and high end was lost so you saw him play all these nice mid fretboard runs on the TV screen but heard naff all of them. Alex's guitar mix and sound were far better. It was similar at NEC 3 years ago. If they accept they are only going to play these types of arenas then they have to address this or it's a waste of talent.
18. I'm avoiding the SECC Rush thread deliberately as I don't want to know the set list in advance. Just checking those of you who went, when did the band start and is it a 2 set job like recent tours? No support presumably? Their web site says start at 7:30 which seems rather early... Cheers Kev
19. I thought all the versions were in Dmin, maybe I'll have to dig it out again...
20. Caught it about halfway through. When I saw the bass I thought 'uh-oh, maybe he feels obliged to do a Jaco thing just cos of who he's playing with' but he has a style of his own and appears totally effortless, very impressive. The bass was fretted anyway so we'll let him off
21. So Rickenbacker would jump all over you if you put one on ebay but have taken no action against Tokai themselves? sounds pretty gutless to me.
22. Same here. I have a US Jazz with S1 switch and a stingray with Nordstrand PU/J East preamp. My 4003 (manufactured in 2000) has a higher output than both of them. If I play both the jazz and the ric at a gig and soundcheck with the jazz on full I would have to turn the ric volume knobs *down* to about 2/3 or even 1/2 to get the same output volume.
23.
i'm not a massive fan, but i did see them in hyde park a few years back...the must have gone right off the boil as they were pretty darn good back then..what was it ? 2004 ? shame...i know they seem to be getting a lot of flack these days...ah well. all good things and such
Saw them on that tour also, at Man City's ground. James Brown (RIP) supported and the RHCP gave an excellent show. Shame they seem to have gone off for this one. As a few have said, some bands just go on delivering forever in a live setting, others peak and fade away. Maybe its time for them to do some solo stuff and work with other people for a while.
24.
Also crossed my mind but I'm really happy with the DI out on my ABM300
Know what you mean. I was happy with the DI out on my Trace (and it's still the final out to the desk in my current setup) until I stuck the bass attack in front of it, wouldn't play live without it now.
25. According to Dr Dave's 'praying' test I'm right dominant. But I do anything that requires a single handed control left handed. I write left handed, hold a spoon/raquet left handed. However, virtually anything that is two handed I do (or did) right handed (bass/knife and fork/golf/cricket). The only thing that I guess is technically two handed that I do lefty is hold a snooker cue but that is so dominant on one of the hands I'm not surprised I do it lefty. I'm sure that it's been said before but for bass being a lefty playing right makes sense - you have all the dexterity and control in the hand which is moving around most. I guess I lose out on some RH strumming dexterity and might partly explain why I can't slap too well.
