1.
I can't offer a direct P pickup comparison, but my Jake has the Delanos, and while with the tone rolled off it nails the P tone IMO, it's pretty aggressive. Dial the tone back in and it growls beautifully, so that's probably not what you're after. Output is massive, my Elwood has the Haussels through a glock preamp, and the output from my passive Jake is much more brutal, add in the Humbucker I have in the bridge and it's pure rawk (which is not what I do, but it's nice to have... gotta keep these folky/country types on their toes!). I can't speak for the Haussel P type pickup, but I find the J types pretty authentic, warm and vintagey, what I'd expect from a jazz. If that extends across their range it might be an option. I'm sure Adrian could advise. Playability wise, I had a Lakland 55-01 alongside my Elwood and found the Elwood much easier to get around on, Some of this would be down to losing an inch off the scale length, as I spend a the bulk of my time at the deep end, the profiles are very similar. I sold it when I ordered the Jake. I'd previously played a standard Jake, and got on with it fine so that's what I went with for mine. It's maybe slightly deeper than the Lakland, but feels more rounded somehow as you move up the neck where the Lakland flattens off more, dead easy to play and certainly not what I'd call big. Compared to the few Fender's I've played, there's much less wood, and the gentler radius and rounded heel makes all the difference to me. I'm no expert on Fenders mind, I've never lived with one, so my experience is limited to little jams on other people's instruments, but they feel a bit primitive to me, and I don't get that from the Jake. Just as a caveat, I'm talking about 5 strings here. The only Jake 4 I've ever had a little play on was Sibob's Beautiful gold, chambered beastie, at last years Herts Bash. That was a lovely instrument to play too.
Thanks for the input NickD. It is very informative and helpful.
  2. I know for how long you have been looking for one of these so I can guess your excitement. Congrats. People will need to see photos asap
  3.
I think the series I TRB GCYPbass details above is a TRB 'P' (with piezo).
True. Completely forgot about the series I with soapbars. Edited
  4. Lower models such as 300s-400s were passive in the 90s. My first proper bass was SR370 and it was passive with pj pickups. My sr600 was active with 3band eq + active pj pickups but I don't remember the production date.
  5. The difference I am aware of is the scale lenght. Series I has 34" scale lenght while series II is 35" scale. Other differences such as preamp and design of the body is explained below by ikay. Another model is TRB P (not newer Ps with soapbars) which is more different from TRB I and II. TRB P Neckthru 34" scale PJ pickups + piezo Better quality wood with top woods on body and veneers on the neck Better quality hardware especially the bridge TRB II Bolt-on 35"scale Soapbars Ash body with 3 piece maple neck (if I remember correctly) I never had I or P series so I cannot compare them but had II series twice in the past. They are great for the money when you think about their prices in the second hand market. It was my first 5 stringer and that bass made it very easy to switch from 4 strings to 5 strings due to 18 or 19 mm string spacing. The only reason I don't have one now is that they are 35" scale. You cannot go wrong with TRB II (especially for the price) if you are ok with 35" scale lenght. It is very versatile and well made bass which will be enough for almost every gig/concert. Cons that come to mind are: - heavy - hiss when you turn the treble up - no active/passive But as I stated you cannot go wrong with TRBII for the price. As for the TRB I or P other BCers may give you some ideas. Cheers
  6.
His own Pickup is made with Ferrite magnets and a lot of winding. Hence the more kind of aggressive sounding bass. Just for the story he made his 1st pickup in Poland when he was about 15 or 16. All the other brands you mentioned are (to my knowledge) Alnico ... which will be much smoother.

Yep, the Maruszczyks in my LPB are hotter and more aggressive than the Haussels in my 3TSB. Both different flavours of loveliness.
Thanks for sharing your opinions guys and for a short history lesson What you guys said confirms what I know about maruszczyk PU's. Wateroftyne, did you have any chance to compare Haeussels with other P PU's other than Maruszczyks? Just for the info, I am after fat, round, smooth sound for motown, reggae etc. rather than aggressive, edgy sound. So Maruszczyk's stock PUs are not the best choice I guess.
in my opinion playability is just as good if not nicer than some of the "big boys"... but that's just personnal.
I have no doubt about the quality but as you mentioned playability is just personal. How is the standard neck profile on Jakes?
  7. I am thinking of getting a precision bass and a jake is one of the options. It is a safe bet to go with Maruszczyk since I own one and already know the quality. Just simple passive with one p pickup. So, my questions to those who have experince with Jakes are that: 1- How do you describe the sound of maruszczyk's own p pickups? 2- Did you have any chance to compare them with other p pickups used by Adrian such as delano, haeussel, aguilar (my frog has bassculture humbuckers and they are great but I don't know if they have p pickup) etc. or any other p pickup you had experince with such as bartolinis, lindy fralins, fender vintage ones etc.? 3- How do you compare the playability and the sound of jakes to other p basses such as fender, lakland, sandberg etc.? I know I can ask these questions to Adrian and I am sure I will get an honest opinion but I would like to know what are the opinions of those who have experince with jakes. Cheers, GC

Beauty. Good luck with the sale.
  10. I finally contacted the BD but got no info. It is very understandable that they are not willing to share this kind of information.
  11.
Have you thought of contacting Bass Direct?

I am in the same situation earlier, difference being its the yellow lee sklar sig dingwall on The gallery. Asked the shop directly and found out it went to US. :-( as above, I suggest that you go ask BD. :-)
Asking to the shop directly was my initial thought but I didn't want to bother them. So I decided to check here first to see if they were bought by any BCer. Will check with the shop too.
  12. Title says it all actually. I just would like to know if anybody here bought or know who bought one of these used Roscoe LGs from Bass Direct. I know it is a long shot but I may try to contact them to see if they would like to sell or trade. Cheers, GC
  13.
What Owen said. Personally, I like a genuine worn bass, so buckle rash, worn off paint and battle scars wouldn't bother me at all.
+1 I don't know if refinish devalue a vintage bass or guitar but I personally prefer original paint.
  14.
I never got that far, that would be good to ask, but he has stopped talking to me now, I think I asked too many questions!

Out of interest, what's the normal response time for an email to these guys? I sent one with a query about a custom build about a week ago, with no response yet. The same thing happened a while ago, I mentioned it on here and got a response after that.

I wrote an email, got a reply the next day, sent a reply, got another reply the next day, sent another reply got 3 replies the same day, last question, haven't heard anything for a few days now.
He is very responsive to emails and facebook messages usually. I exchanged a few emails/fb messages with him last week and remember him stating that he will be out of the office for about a week.
  15. Can anybody suggest a suitable soft case or carry bag for Eden WT800 head please? Where I can order one from? Cheers
  16. I use phil jones headphones. They are more expensive than the suggestions above though. http://bassmusicianmagazine.com/2014/11/phil-jones-bass-h850-headphones-review/
  17. This used to be mine and I can tell that the weight makes it very comfortable for long gigs and it has one of the best jazz necks I have ever played. GLWTS Andy
Is this a US or Jap model
Roadworns are Mexican but they are as good as US ones.
  18. Andy is a great guy not only to deal with but also chat and share opinions about anything. I traded my roadworn jazz with his sandberg. Everything went really well. The bass arrived very well packed and as he described which is in mint condition. It was great pleasure to deal and chat with him. He became a friend to me Buy and sell with confidence... Thanks Andy
  19. Bought an Eden head from Chris. Great communication. He posted the head quickly and it was very well packed. Deal with confidence.
  20.
Really nice acoustic reggae sound. Tight bass, banging chuckas, sweet brass and great vocalist.
Thanks a lot for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it.
  21. I believe the hardest thing to get used to is string spacing when you switch from 4 to 5 stringer. My first 5 string was yamaha TRB5 II which has similar string spacing to 4 string and it made getting used to process very easy. So I suggest you checking them out. They go for very low prices used. My only problem with TRB5 II was it being 35" scale lenght. Older TRBs have 34" scale but they are bit more expensive used. Another good and cheap option would be Yamaha BB415. I used one for some time and it feels very comfortable.
  22. Anybody could contact someone from BF lately? Its been some time that I am trying to reach them via email but got no reply. Are they on holiday?
  23. Anybody has experience with Haeussel single coils? I am guessing they are vintage sounding but would like know what users think. What other single coil PUs you had/have experience with and how do Haeussels compare?
  24.
Ah I think I really need to seriously consider one of these. The problem is the amount of options is baffling!
Had the same problem and ended up buying one in stock. Simple
