1. I know what you mean. I bought this last week: http://www.timespace.com/product/SDPGP-110/3/10000133/sound_dust_plastic_ghost_piano_kontakt_%28download%29.html and used it on my track for this month's comp challenge (not posted it yet) and it sounds amazingly atmospheric.
2. Nova is on sale over on VSTBuzz for 20 euros but whilst browsing the site of the library creator I found that Nova, plus 9 other instruments can be had for £30 (use the discount on the product page to reduce it from £50 to £30): http://www.djshmusic.com/#!djsh-bundle/ctwz Still thinking about buying it myself but the only thing* stopping me is that I have Komplete Ultimate which includes Evolve, Damage, Absynth and other instruments that give me pretty much the same range of sounds. But for £30 this looks like a very good, cheap intro to cinematic sound creation. Another advantage is that you can watch CSI on TV without recognising every single patch from Evolve and Damage! * Not the only thing actually, I'm buying so many small, nice libraries that I need to reign myself in a bit so that I can spend time composing rather than searching through half a terabyte of samples and patches!
3.
Go for it! I've found it a great learning experience and a lot of fun.
Ditto that. And if you need any help at any stage, just shout and we'll help you out.
4. Well I've got the framework for mine down already. Needs a lot of tidying up and a few tweaks though.
5. Well I tried the demo in standalone mode, selected my Forte soundcard as the device and it blasted a massive amount of feedback and static through my headphones. So I'll give this one a miss I think. Never had an amp sim do that before.
6. I didn't know there was a demo actually. I've give that a go and should be able to see if it's the sounds i want. Ampeg SVX is the best sounding amp sim I've used so far so I may just end up sticking with that.
7. I'll try not to disappoint
8. Ooh sci-fi! Looking forward to this one
9. Has anyone used the Overloud Mark Studio amp sim? It's on sale at half price over at Time+Space and as a MarkBass CMD121P user I was interested. However they only seem to have their tube heads in there and not their solid state ones so I can't replicate my combo. I have Ampeg SVX and Guitar Rig 5 Pro so not sure if this would give me anything extra, or anything like my real MB gear. On a related note, I usually take a DI out of my combo (essentially a Little Mark III) when I record. Am I right in thinking that this will replicate the sound (minus the cab and any mic setup) anyway?
10. Would be criminal to pass that one up really.
11.
EDIT: Just found that Hobgoblin Music in Bristol have a couple of Ashbury (budget brand - not Ashbory) bass ukes in stock.
They're worth checking out. I tried one and really liked it. They have flatwounds on them rather than the big fat rubber strings but still sound good.
12.
Don't think they understand 'irony', which is ironic given Alanis Morrisette's hit.....
Ironically she's Canadian
13. How did we end up with 7 votes in total from 3 people? Don't waste your right to vote!
14. Hey, I saw this post 2 mins after Paul posted it and I've not listened to them all yet! Give me a chance!
15. christofloffer - you mentioned in your track description that you struggled to keep the meters out of the red. I used to have this problem a lot too. After reading a whole tonne of advice about it I now record real instruments at around -8 to -12 db (which sounds like it may be too quiet but you actually get a better sound). Then after effects - eq and compression and maybe some reverb - on each track they'll get to around -6 to -4 db. This leaves a bit of room to put some mastering effects on the master channel. I use T-racks for this. If any of your recorded instruments sound too quiet pop a gain plugin on them. I use Blue Cat Audio's BC Gain 3 - free I think (http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Product_GainSuite/ - yep, free and they have some others I should check out too).
16. Good timing, I've just this minute sat down at my PC!
17. Finished mine! Here's the result: https://soundcloud.com/mornats/downhill
18. Is anyone else watching all these videos just in case they find that they're playing on them?
19.
I was there too. My memory is that GnR were pretty good that day. Edit: Just found this, I'm not sure I dare watch it and soil my memory. HTTPS://youtu.be/cl51Wi_sWTE
It was a long time ago! I remember the 2 hour or so wait for them to get on stage. That sucked. I skipped through that video and yeah, despite the low quality of the vid (1992 and all that) they seem pretty decent. I was just so chuffed to see Faith No More that nothing else matched their performance until I saw FnM again last year.
20. I have my mix sounding just how I want it on headphones* but now need to translate that to speakers. What sounds right in the sound space on cans never sounds like it's in the same space on my monitors. Reverb and the pseudo-physical placement of the instruments is just so different. On the plus side I get to research how to fix this and play around a bit. Once that's done I just need to go pro on Soundcloud for the extra minutes then it's all done. Oh, and I managed to knock out a track in between last month's and this month's challenge too! * I always record and do the initial mixes on headphones due to living in an old Victorian terrace with paper thin walls. I don't mind my neighbours and don't want to subject them to hearing the same track played over and over again
21.
On par with GnR at Gateshead Stadium back in the day...
Tell me about it, I was at that one Faith No More and Soundgarden were class though.
22. It looks like the layout is all messed up. Could be an issue with Safari. It seems to be the most troublesome browser these days when it comes to web development. Try Firefox or Chrome (or any other alternative browser) to see if it looks normal in them. If so, see about updating Safari although I think Safari updates are hooked into OSX versions these days? Reminds me of the bad old days of Internet Explorer!
23.
the video is a bit stop start to provide any rhythm.
I listened to my track with the video running and kept wanting the snowboarders to do a big huge fast run all the way through. I still think it's a decent fit though. It's inspired by some Beastie Boys songs. They have a video for Mullethead that's set to snowboarding which make me think of them. And it was whilst auditioning vintage organs in search for a sound similar to one in So Whatcha' Want? that I stumbled across the tune that will eventually be my entry this month.
24.
I'll assume that you've at least come across the SWS Extensions for Reaper..? There's a lot there; a very useful one, I've found, is an LFO Generator; I have used it for simulating a wah pedal, for instance, or slowly fading between two sounds. Powerful stuff, indeed.
Ah yeah I have those installed. I use the notes one a lot for keeping track of any mix changes I need to make and to also make a note of the chord sequences of songs. I need to check out and RTFM for the rest of the SWS ones
