1.
Make it clear to future bookers what they are getting. We make it pretty clear that for what they are typically paying us they will get 2x45 min sets maybe a few mins more for pub gigs. We sometimes extend to 2x60min if it is a well paying agency gig at a wmc etc but this is rare. It is up to the venue to decide when they want us to finish and if they want to fill the down time with other acts or background music.
I'm used to that scenario with functions where everything is pre arranged and nailed down, this band is a young band and quite a new venture so they are doing as many gigs as possible to get a reputation which will make it easier later on and in terms of next year is already paying off and i think they are accepting gigs so that further down the line they can be nore selective , i originally said i would help out as they had no bass player that was in january and i'm still here as such i really try not to get involved with any of the organisation. To be fair most gigs we have done have been 45 minute first set followed by 1 hour this was slightly different being a town centre bar however you are quite right any future gigs there will have to be set in stone before we commit certainly from my point of view. i guess the thing is it's a learning curve for them at the moment so all advice is greatly appreciated so i can pass it on. Cheers Steve
2.
^^^^ 'Interesting' - my feelings about a return would be something on the lines of 'fvck that for a game of soldiers'...... .....but each to their own.
Yes sort of my original feelings to be honest
3. Don't often post on here but friday nights gig was an experience not being experienced in the world of pub gigs having previously been in a function band i'm just getting to grips with the challenges of pub gigs and their audiences. Friday night we played the Green Room in St Helens now seeing as we are from Wigan and the rivalry between the towns is legendary in the area this was a challenge in itself. we were booked to play 2 sets between 10.30pm and 1.30 am as this is a town centre bar. i had been warned it was small but this was seriously so, we varrived at 7 to set up as we needed to be done by 8 as they had an accoustic act on from 8.30 - 10.30. Having managed to set up on the small stage the manageress then came over and asked us to move our backline forward as the owner wanted the bi fold windows behind us wide open so as to attract the passing trade, we explained to her it was pouring down and November and this might be an issue with the electrics etc eventually a compromise was reached and we played with them slightly ajar. The accoustic act was excellent playing a mixture of indie covers some country and beatles 60's all of which covered about half our set, literally as soon as he had finished the manageress was on our case to get on, we ended up playing 2 sets first an hour and 5 minutes and the 2nd about an hour and 40 minutes which was tough the manageress was timing us to tell the owner how long we did as they are obsessed that if you stop people will move on. That aside the gig was generally ok a few issues with sound early on and obviously space but the audience can only be described as slightly bizarre and extremely lively despite being on a raised area with a rail round most of us the lead singer had 2 drinks spilt over him and his pedal board a girl who fell over all over the monitors blind drunk, but the star of the night was the 60 something guy who arrived carrying an asda bag for life from which he took a pair of drumsticks and proceeded to air drum through the whole two sets. All in all despite the challenges and having to play an indoor gig wearing a coat due to having the large window behind me open all night it was good fun and the band went down well with offers of more gigs for next year. I appreciate this is probably quite a normal night for you hardened pub giggers but for someone from the more refined world of functions it was quite an experience although an enjoyable one !!!!
4. Keep going at this rate and we'll beable to have our own Wigan bass bash
5. Well one of my stock jakes has sold and my custom order has just gone in 12 week waiting still astounded at what i've got for the price

7. For sale is my Maruszczyk Jake in Redburst with a matching headstock and ebony board which I bought as stock about 9 months ago as a result of reading the reviews on here. I have to say I have not been disappointed the bass is excellent and so much so I bought another however I am now putting this up for sale to fund a custom build from Maruszczyk. The bass is in excellent condition and has the haeussel pick ups which give it a lovely vintage vibe nice and light at just under 8lbs. Comes with a Maruszczyk gig bag . The full spec is Body : Alder with flamed maple top and back Neck : Hard rock maple with matching headstock Fingerboard : Ebony 21 frets Nut Width : 40mm Construction : bolt on Pick guard : black Pick ups : Haeussel P+JJ Electronics : passive volume Volume Tone Hardware : black Price is inclusive of postage not really looking for any trades at the moment as the sale is to fund a custom build. Bass is in Wigan in the North West happy for people to come and try it out also happy to meet up within reason.
8. Which is how i came to be the owner of said lovely white/maple Jake haha, to be honest that is going nowhere i also have a redburst which will probably go up for sale pretty soon. i was looking at the new Lakland PJ in black/ Rosewood with blocks binding and matching headstock which was stunning , then i looked at the price of a skyline and it was a no brainer hence the e mail to Adrian
9. Just spoken to Adrian about a custom build Jake with a single J pup which means one of my off the shelf Jakes will have to go to help fund it looks like there will be a nice jake for sale soon !!!!!!
10. Another recommendation for Dave Wilson i had a bass refinished by him excellent job top quality work
11.
Why hasn't this gone???? Thank god my van hasn't sold yet, otherwise this would be on the way to me! GLWTS
Hi Karl hope you're well sorry original gigbag is long gone must admit I'm surprised this hasn't sold at the price probably says a lot about the state of the market at the moment
12.
That's lovely. I miss my old BG. Do you still have the original pick guard?
I may have somewhere the original was a a parchment colour so I could have a look
13. Bump for lower price Now £450 including postage £430 collected Cheers Steve
14. Thanks Karl think it's probably a sign of the times things certainly don't move as fast as they used to
15.
I know Dave Wilson personally and his work is second to none! Do you have an accurate weight (I'll be the first of the 'weight challenged' shoulder injured bassists to ask)?
I can vouch for that it's a superb job it's got a proper vintage look about it the photos don't do the colour justice Not sure about the weight I will try and get an accurate measure and let you know it's not the lightest though which is one of the reasons I've gone with the maruszczyk Cheers Steve
16. Has to be done Martin unfortunately new business venture dictates I can't justify 3 basses Cheers Steve
17. Difficult to do this but I'm putting up for sale is my Lakland Bob Glaub Precision, I didn't think this day would come as I've had this bass from new having bought it from bass central in Florida, however the purchase of 2 new Maruszczyk jakes means something has to go as I just can't justify 3 basses. The bass was refinished about 2 years ago in Olympic white with a matching headstock by Dave Wilson who also made me a white pearl pick guard to compliment the bass. The finish was superb as I'm sure many people on here will testify to the quality of Daves work. The bass has one small chip on the bottom edge one of the perils of having been my main gigging bass for the last 5 or 6 years. I have tried to show this in the pictures however my photographic skills are notoriously bad !!!! This is the Korean version and is fitted with Laklands Hanson pick ups, currently fitted with Lakland medium Gauge flats. I may be biased but I personally think these are as good a precision as there are out there. Looking for £450 including postage or if you want to collect £430 Bass is located in Wigan up in the North West Please feel free to ask if you have any questions Cheers Steve
