1.
but if it gets you a foot in the door, make sure you can back it up.
Not so sure about this one imhe i've never been questioned on my past credits although i guess if it got to a really serious level maybe there would be a few questions asked but i think generally people don't really care enough to check
 2. Members of this band have played with ..... looks good on a function band C.V. to the uneducated eye however most musos will know that most of this is complete bs and that everyone does it to try and make themselves look better however i don't think i've ever been booked on the strength of my "i've played with/supported list" Which fyi includes Wretch 32, Ed Sheeran, Ms Bratt and lioness (charity gig at proud 2 at the o2 never saw any of them) The Rascals (formerly lil rascals currently touring with Connor Maynard did one gig with them and then the management cut costs) Ben Marvin (son of Hank Marvin of The Shadows in reality i do a function band with him and hes a really sound guy) so yeh it's pretty easy to make things sound a lot better than they are and hey if it gets you the gig why not?
 3. just fyi thats the live room at resident studios in Willesden Green, nice sound mate i used to play with Josh (your drummer) when he did the master performance at Tech
 4.
Unless the technical stuff turns you on.... If your amp only goes to 4 ohm (and 99.9% do) that means you can connect 1 x 8 ohm cab, 2 x 8 ohm cabs or 1 x 4 ohm cab. That's all. Make sure that the watts rating (as listed on the back of the cabs) exceeds the maximum watts output of the amp. If you are running 1 x 8 ohm cab and find you need more volume get another (similar) cab. If you need more volume and you’re already running the maximum number of cabs, it's time to upgrade to a more powerful amp. Check that your cabs are still ok for the new amp.
+1 good explanation
 5. Thanks Mcnach! i'll give it a whirl and see what happens cheers
 6.
Although emails and txts can be recalled later at will, while people often fail to make notes and "misremember"... Online calendars are also a very very good thing.
i think the point is that emails are good for information i.e dates and times indeed its the email from the singer which means i can prove it was bad comunication that led to me not being able to do the gig and not my mistake however i do agree that it is a lot easier to ascertain exactly what someone means when you are talking to them over the phone or face to face but yeh maybe an online calender is a good solution to this situation would you care to suggest a free/relatively cheap one?
 7.
Seriously. You have called her haven't you? You've had over a week.
yeh i thought it was sorted out on the day then i get to a rehearsal to run new songs (which the singer couldn't make due to having to go to hospital) to find out that the gig that they'd wanted to use a dep for had been cancelled anyway because a couple more of the band can't do it. also that one of the other gigs i'd been told was originally booked for the 22nd july is in fact the 22nd of june and so this friday and so therefore i'm already booked anyway (brought the same dep in again) the words piss up and brewery come to mind seriously considering my future in this band at the moment
 8. been playing 5's for a couple of years now and its really useful to have the extra facility there to go down below E (superstition springs to mind immediately) also if you ever consider doing pit work a 5 is essential. i have quite small hands and so imo hand size isn't an issue its more a case of finding where your comfortable. It took me about a month to adjust to playing a 5 and finding where home is i.e remembering you have an extra string. I've owned a MIA fender jazz V and a Bacchus 5 is my main axe at the moment i've also had a blast on my friends lakland 55-01 (which i think £ 4 £ is one of the best value 5 strings out there) and a streamer V all of which have been no problem just a case of getting used to them which once you've played a 5 doesn't take very long
 9. "real bass players" know when a pick is needed to give that line a little twang or make their playing just that little bit more agressive IME yes you can get close to the sound with fingers but its never quite the same like playing a slap line with fingers it'll work n get you through it but its not the real deal
 10. sorry if this has been covered only skimmed through the thread but with any band i'm running the venue and the band sign a contract detailing the time, date, venue and whats expected from both parties i.e. minimum space requirements ect... i know this is a little late for this one but if you ever need a template contract to give you some kind of legal backup a good one can be found for free here: http://www.blues101.org/articles/contracts.htm or here for a smaller venue i.e a pub gig http://www.blues101.org/articles/contracts3.htm#Casual Band Booking i think the MU have a service like this however i think you have to be a member to use it
 11.
it is simply not the thing to do. Could this have happened to you?
yeh i've been on the wrong end of that before needing an emergency dep due to my grandparents being burgled who then took the gig from me bit rubbish but the artist got dropped by her management 3 weeks later (karmas a bitch) i think the problem maybe lies in the people i get to dep for me as they're all good players as i don't think its fair on the band to put someone in that isn't as good as i am maybe i should start using slightly worse players? in terms of running a band with 2 bass players i do a function band at the moment with 4 of us rotating depending on each others schedules all of us know the set inside out and have gigged with the band before and its not a problem
 12. just an update really spoken to my friend who was the dep in question and he's told them in no uncertain terms that he's not doing the gig unless i can't do it, also found out that the guitarist and keys player would have to find deps anyway seems like a little power trip by the singer to me, and in answer to your question woody yes she is however she has worked her way around a few guys in my year at uni so if you'd be so kind as to pass me my barge pole.
 13. thanks guys some useful advice from all sides to take into consideration before i decide what to do thanks again BC'ers
 14.
MB1. Heres how i read it... "We really want to get this moving!" with a permanent reliable line up.....No Johnny Depps!
IME i can't just commit to one band i wouldn't be able to pay my bills so occasionally things clash i realize that other people have different opinions and situations and but for me at the moment using deps is the better option rather than having the band cancel the gig because the other function bands i play with are more organised and book me weeks if not months in advance. Just to be clear this isn't an originals band doing their own stuff (if that was the case i would understand) its just a pub covers band who play the odd wedding and private party but its an extra £50-£60 in my pocket. its a band of people in the same situation supposedly professional musicians who all have their own stuff going on everyone's in a few bands and I've never encountered a problem using deps in this band or bands like this before. again all due respect to you MB1 but i don't use people to dep for me unless i know them very well and i'm 100% confident that they will do the job as well as i could so i think the no deps thing is a bit of a non factor
 15.
what does your friend (dep) think? If it were me in his shoes, I'd feel very wary of "stealing" your gig and I'd not simply accept the gigs unless you specifically asked for a dep. hmmm.
yeh unfortunately i know he's on a gig tonight so i can't really call him and speak to him about it but we're gonna sit down over a beer or two n have a chat at some point
 16. turns out that they put 6 new songs in the set and she doesnt think i have the time to learn them before the 7th july (yes you smell exactly what i smell) so we've come to a compromise that the dep player is only doing the gig that she claims he was requested for and i've made my feelings very clear to her about it so hopefully it wont happen again i don't wanna cut my nose off to spite my face i can afford to lose one gig (at pub money) if it means i get 3 others from it whereas if i insist on doing it i'll probs end up with no gigs
That's bands for ya mate, carry on with them 'til you sort something else out
i've got a few on the go so if things get a bit hectic i know who i'm prioritizing
 17. its a female singer and i think she's trying to make it seem nicer
 18. hi guys sorry to start one of these threads again but i'm not sure how to take this really just had this message from the lead singer from one of the function bands i'm in just a bit of back story i depped out the last gig to a friend of mine because it was the jublee weekend and i had gigs previously booked and then this landed in my inbox today hey regarding the band we haven't heard from you at all about rehearsals or gigs etc.. I'm worried about your availability for our band this summer and the rest of the year because we really want to get this moving. How do you feel about it? There will be no hard feelings if you feel you can't manage it. There a few gigs coming up but it was from the street party and we have been requested specifically so will use (the dep bass player) for them. Hope you are good.. let me know whats happening Xxx now am i being unreasonable if i kick up a fuss about this as IME all the gigs that the band get come to me and then i dep them out if i need to surely they don't just start calling the dep for all the gigs booked off the back of a gig i couldn't make because it was a last minute gig and i had something else booked? also to compound the problem the keyboard player has been kicked out of the band and replaced with the singers brother without so much as a word to me about it feeling slightly out of the loop at the moment any advice?
 19.
and that is all you need to know... then all you need to do is get your head round the general style and run with it. Try singing along with the bass line to get the general groove and then play what you can sing/hum Making it sit and making it work and move will help you far more than ripping every little nuance and note. Play it with your own personality... and if that is any good, you'l leap-frog all the imitators.
+1 its a pretty simple concept he's playing around with on this track imo and you just need to work that out and then a few variations of it and play around with it
 20. wedding gig last night inside a marquee, torrent of rain outside meant everyone just packed onto the dancefloor and got hammered
 21.
Actually I've found that my Markbass rig sounds a lot different at higher volumes. You really get the full benefit of those earth shaking lows when you crank it, but you don't lose any of that clarity! The settings I normally have tend to sound a bit thin at low levels..
+1 i'm running a LM 3 at the minute and that plus a traveler 2x10 can easily keep up with the marshall heads and 4x12's in the local rehersal hole also used that set up for a heavy rock gig the other day (not my normal thing but trying to do as much as a can) and if you boost the low mids you get a lovely agressive tone from it
 22.
Rosanna
i'd love to play that its a proper tune
 23. Hey guys so i'm depping for a function band in a month or so and i was browsing through the setlist today. Mostly standard stuff however i get to the encores section and there i see written "The Boys are Back in Town - Thin Lizzy" which for me is a complete result for me as i love the song and i've always wanted to play it live however none of the bands i've ever been in have done it (be that due to the band not being good enough or not the right style ect) This started me thinking are there any other songs be them popular or not that you wish you played live but have never done? chris
 24.
Funnily enough despite all the things I DO take, I've never taken a spare set of strings! That's gonna bite me in the arse some day..
I didn't carry a spare set of strings with me however i have had to do half a rehersal without an E string before its a challenge but not impossible just means you have to think a bit more so now i have a spare set
 25.
Ok, so honesty and a well kept diary are the tools for this trade.
Absolutely organisation is key i'm in a slighly different situation in that i'm a full time student however i still find time to work for 3 function bands, and 4 original artists plus doing deps for people as well. My policy is that if i for some reason can't make the gig then i'll provide a dep who can and is up to speed and more than capable of doing the gig (that last part is key). would your bands be open to the idea of another local player you know well depping for you on a gig? Then everybody wins both bands play their gigs and your providing a gig for someone who wouldn't have otherwise had one
