  1. What are we like, EH? For years I thought I was the only prat who could treat the tools of his trade in such a careless way, I feel so much better now, thank you.
  2. Use strap locks, but make sure the matchsticks that you have screwed into don't come loose. It happened to this bloke I know. Sent the toggle switch through the scratchplate of HIS Ricky 4003. There's a lot of good confession therapy on this forum today. Cheers
  3. I have left my bass behind at a gig before............ TWICE. Yea I know...twonk.............once in bloody Germany. We were on the ferry back home when I'd discovered it was missing, "Oh I remember seeing it propped up against the wall outside last nights gig" said the drummer, helpfully. Luck would have it, our agent phoned to tell me that a comedian on the same bill had picked it up, trouble was, he wouldn't be back in blighty for another two months. When the day finally came to go and pick it up, Drove from Swindon to Preston expressed my thanks, then ran out of bleedin' petrol on the motorway halfway back. Only my silly self to blame EH?
  4. Really nice, I love the build up of intensity toward the end, yea keep them coming.
  5. Thanks Major, It's amazing what the educated eye can tell from a little photo, eh? Good job you can't see what my other hand doing. See teachers, I need help.
  6. I have been playing DB for a couple of years now, following many years of EB, and although I have taken it out in public on a few occasions, I am all too aware of my shortcomings. Now I know I need a teacher, but can anybody recommend one who isn't going to take me through the grades I just require putting right in a few places and someone to be my mentor. I bet that there are a few people in my position, who don't know where to turn. I live in easy reach of anywhere in Oxon/Glos/Wilts, any recommendations gratefully received, thanks for reading.
  7. Thats very interesting, I'm quite new to DB and my first " experiment " in the string world ,a couple of years ago,was a set of medium Hybrid Helicores. I chose them because I wanted to learn arco , still not very good though. At first I thought they sounded OK ,not having any other string to compare .As my playing improves ,I find that the lower two strings especially the E can provide some lovely growling sustain, but the D and G feel and sound like brake cables. How long do other people keep their stings on ? is two years excessive. I just don't know what to try next. Any tips on choosing strings out there ?
  8. I have just spent the last couple of hours looking at string repair .com on the upton site . Absolutely fascinating . Trouble is , I'm now casting a very critical eye over the construction of my Stentor. Ignorance was such bliss.
  9. Sorry didn't reply , I couldn't find a measuring stick. Now I have ,I measured exactly the same as Monz 752mm.
  10. sorry mate, would love to help , but my stinger's only got one pickup.
  11. I also use the Clarus and currently EA cxl 1x10 and cxl 1x12 with both electric and upright. I find the 10 inch fantastic for small rehearsal situations but it just dos'nt cut it on a stage, even in a small pub .The 12 inch on the other hand seems to deliver rich tone right across the spectrum ,but even that ,with a noisy electric guitar on stage ,can't bring the double bass up in the mix.I use the two cabs together but the 10 just disappears .Is the way to go 4x10 or 4x12 ? can anyone recommend any ?
  12. I use the KK bass max,it's the only pickup I have used so far so have nothing to compare it with.plugged straight into a clarus 1 it sounds good to me and so very easy to fit and use.
  13. Last night , nice little pub gig playing our very personal take on love , life ,politics and religion to an audience who clearly seemed to be enjoying the evening as much as us. I've got one ear on my own sound a little more than usual tonight as I'm breaking in my brand new Euphonic Audio micro 300 .Nice big sound for one so small. Switches nicely between the stingray and the upright. About halfway through the set ,they are actually dancing, not bad for original songs I'm sure they have not heard before ,and to think we are yet to break open the rip roarers ,this is turning out to be a most agreeable outing. the bass has disappeared ,don't say the EA has overheated and the thermal cut out kicked in ,can't be a power cut ,the band plays on without me.All the lights are out on the amp ,I'm playing about with the power switch,"must have overheated " I shout to our drummer."Nah" says he "bit more serious ,did'nt you see that blue flame shoot out the top."...................... must dash ,got a phone call to make.
  14. Although I have played a few EB stingrays I have never actually lived with one , everything about them is great from what I can tell from a shop situation, gorgeous beasts. But I have had the privilege of living with two pre Eb's ,a 77, which sounded and played like a dream, but ate batteries at an alarming rate, and now a 79 which is perfect in every way ,for me that is.Some like new things with all the technical cliches ironed out but I think there is something special about a well worn classic instrument, with all it's funny little ways. Horses for courses as they say , and pre EB rays weigh nearly as much. Enjoy trying out as many of each as you can.
  15. HEAR HEAR HEAR YOU JUST CANNOT HAVE A DISCUSSION ABOUT MUSICMAN BASSES WITHOUT GIVING PRE EB STINGRAYS A DROOLING MENTION. DESIGN ICON .10 POUNDERS WITH A THICK SLAB BODY, ONE PUP ,THE SIMPLICITY ,TONE TO DIE FOR ,PLAYABILITY, COOLEST LOOKS. MY OPINION ANYWAY. GUESS WHAT I'VE GOT.
  16. Cheers guys, now I have an idea of what to research, that focus 2 looks very ineresting ,loads of power.I think if I had the funds right now......
  17. Do any of you chaps gig with both double bass and bass guitar ? If so ,what rigs do you use or have used ? At the moment I'm playing my stentor ,not the brightest sounding bull fiddle ,and my 79 stingray ,through a Laney RB4,which was ok for rehearsals ,but frankly sounds ..........um, in a live situation. I recently saw a guy playing upright through a little Markbass combo, which sounded great.what are they like for bass guitar as well ? Also, does anyone have any advice for switching between instruments mid gig, as I'm finding it a bit of a 'mare at the moment.
  18. My 79 2eq weighs 10lbs, sometimes makes the shoulder area wince during a long session, but I forgive her,she gives back so much with her beautiful voice. Young planks just don't sound or feel the same; or am I just being ageist ?
  19. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NOP NOP NOP OK I'LL PUT ME BID IN. I WAS SINGING RAW HIDE IN THE SHOWER THIS MORNING.
  20. But seriously,I always remember it was mr gadd who made me prick my ears up on AJA. and then I discovered mr rainey. A beautiful timeless album ,I still can't stop listening to it.
  21. When I'm in the mood ,it has to be ALL AROUND MY HAT..........................................SORRY
