err.. wow.. thx for all of the replies.. i'm genuinely gobsmacked.. you can easily build one of these from stock parts.. the neck is available from http://www.status-graphite.com/status/fram...ndex_home.html.. when you consider that a mex jazz neck will cost you the best part of 150 quid w/o tuners i reckon they're a bargain.. the pickup mount is easy to rout. it is half done for you already because it goes in the middle of the precision pickup holes.. the main issue is the scratch plate and moving the pickup hole.. other than that it is a bog standard precision template.. mr T.. i particularly approve of the bike..:-) cheers all .. mike .. speak soon..

hi everyone.. some of you might remember i was asking for stingray dimensions.. its been done a couple of months but being a lazy sod i've only just got round to posting this (after a bit of prompting from mikeyr) ..i'd already built an ibanez bits guitar that was black with emgs' and what have you whilst i was on the dark side.. booo..but now i have returned to the true path.. if you recall i wanted a precision type thing but with a humbucking pickup.. i had toyed with the idea of a gandl l2000 or a musicman stingray as i prefered the sound but couldn't justify over a grand for an instrument (i'm not good enough) so i thought well i could get a precision in parts as i know all of the bits should fit and then mod the body for the new pickup.. a custom scratchplate would cover the old holes if done nicely.. the hard bit therefore would be the routing and what have you.. if you think about it, thats how leo f. got to invent the stingray in the first place.. it is in effect a precision with a humbucker on it (precision 2 you might say.. ooh i'll get into trouble for that.. heh) my specs were the following 1. i wanted a precision body cos i don't like the 'cock eyed' jazz body that always falls over when you stand it up 2. wanted a jazz type neck cos they're a bit thinner at the nut end 3. wanted an emg active stingray pickup (cos i'm an emg obsessive) 4. i wanted the jack plug through the bottom gibson style.. (thought about having it recessed ibanez style..far too much hassle believe me) so after trawling ebay.. the interweb and this very site.. i ended up with s /h status graphite add on jazz neck..with tunersfrom here 200 s /h mexican precision body black.. ebay 120 (did go awol with customs for a week or two.. <shrugs>) s /h emg stingray replacement (mmcs) 50 (customs missed that one.. gift.. ) new fender hmv (high mass volume) bridge 50 (ouch.. worth the extra though .. quality item) various fender bits, jazz knobs, screws, straplocks why 40 custom scratch plate 30 routing.. electrics.. jack plug mount etc 20 (yeah ok ..so i didn't do it myself..) set of elites 20 grand total 550 so it turns out i invented a modulus flea a like on the cheap but i prefer to call it a bits a ray. big shout to steve gaines at wavelength music in sheffield for the nasty bits like the routing and scratch plate.. ok ..and the electrics and mikey r for being a walking encyclopedia of all things bass.. good luck with the build mate.. so what does it sound like.. umm a stingray as it happens.. its a bit nicer now that the strings arent as zingey.. its 'very' loud!! feedback has been particularly favourable.. enclosed piccy.. thanks for everyones help..
3. i've found that my specialist (expensive) bike cable cutters are mint for this kind of thing.
4. thats great advice.. many thanks ;-)
5. thats great guys.. thanks.. just what i needed.. now that i have all of the bits!! apologies for late reply.. been in hospital (routine, don't worry)
6. >but my stinger's only got one pickup hi .. thx for replying .. actually if you get the time, the distance to the bridge pickup would be cool (leading edge to the nut).. i think i'm only going to put the bridge pickup on anyway.. what with emg's being the best part of ninety quid :-/
7. hi all.. i'm currently putting together my 'bitza' precision, except that i want humbuckers in it and not single coils cos i prefer them (and i have a serious emg addiction).. so it will end up like a musicman i suppose (hey perhaps that was leo's original idea..) or even a modlus (which is a jazz with musicman pickups if you think about it.. albeit a bit better quality i suppose) anyrate.. i'd like some kind soul out there to measure up their musicman stingray and tell me the distance from the nut at the top of the neck to the first (neck) pickup and the second (bridge) pickup, so that i can get them in the right place.. also if anyone has a paper template for a precision pickguard i'd love a copy of it.. thanks all!!

11. the other supports were the minutemen and ukdecay .. i saw them at the leadmill, sheffield.. it was so loud i went out and vomited.. hold on a miute you jmust have been in quite a well known band to be offered that one.. hmm. i wonder who? ;-)
12. >JJ was a bit of a Prima Donna...and not a very nice person when the mood took normal kind of guy then.. about the punk thing.. punk is an attitude.. you can play your music and be punk if you have the right attitude.. most people didnt' regard the stranglers as punk musically but they certainly the attitude.. i don't think invented punk but i'm the same age as you beat so you can work the rest out for yourself.
13.
To be fair, there was a guy who ran a dedicated supply from a nearby substation to feed his hifi. Using good cabling, naturally. It had a separate meter, the lot.
and.. presumably his ipod?
14. if you understand what you are doing then it simply gives you more options when you are creating and you will know 'what' to play quicker than trial and error .. it is a double edged sword though.. be aware of not shackling yourself by the theory.. keep trying mad stuff (turn your brain off).. also it gives you more confidence so that when some plonker says 'ooh that was a bum note' you can say 'well actually i put that in deliberately cos i like the sound of the tension created by the flat five against the tonic' and all that guff.. you know what they say.. if you make a mistake play it twice..then everyone thinks its deliberate (jazz!)
15. >Bruce Foxton is another very influential player from the early punk era. yeah he was but he was in a guitar band..TBF I already mentioned entwhistle and chris squire was/is really good but all i ever heard about was steve howe this and steve howe that.. prior to burnel..everyone wanted to be blackmore (hendrix by proxy).. and i'll prove it.. why did some of from that era take up bass then.. was it because there was this french guy in this band with the 'most' attitude that rode a triumph bonneville.. black belt in karate and was fighting women off with a stick and was rated by all and sundry as the best bass player in the land.. yeah me too.. anyways you should check him out mr punk man.. i could also recommend jah wobble (as mentioned here).. paul gray of the damned and the dude in new model army (morrow) would be worth looking at.. also the guy who played on henry rollins later solo stuff i'll shut up now ..
