I've had two Hohner B2 5-strings, identical other than the pickups and one being active. Quite a chunky neck on them both of course, the passive one sounded quite thin in comparison to the active one. So necks may be a variable but I haven't found it myself. My extremely slim-necked Warwick has a good deep growl that's identical to the baseball-bat-necked Warwicks, so I would say that's two empirical results which show you haven't looked at the right slim-necked basses.
OK, so I need to get out more..

This is curious if you ask me. Styling isn't at its finest though. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Framus-Triumph-Electric-Upright-Bass-Circa-1950s-/131771900470?hash=item1eae37a236:g:HxEAAOSwEK9XArIK

I bought this recently for a bass, but I sent the bass back. So the pup is surplus to requirements. I've connected briefly to another bass to hear what it sounds like; and it sounds immense. It comes as you see here, with all the packaging The windings look like waxed string and the magnets are Alnico; as you can see above in the picture. The price of £29 includes postage in the UK, but I'm happy to send to other countries too; just mail me for a price. I'll be sorry to see this go, as it's full of charm that's seldom seen these days, but I don't have a bass for it right now. I'm based near Stansted Airport btw, if you'd like to come and collect. Thanks for looking. Richard

Sold a Fender P MIM to Kev. Good guy to deal with. Good to chat with and all that stuff. All round good guy. Many thanks Kev. I hope you're happy with the bass. Cheers Richard
I guess that's the worm can opened now
Many folk are happy to talk about resonance in the body changing the tone. I'll bet anything that resonance in the neck is more likely, by miles, to affect the tone. Strangley, I've never (yet) warmed to a bass with a maple neck either. I'm open to being convinced.
Why do you think a thin neck means a thin sound and chunky neck means a solid tone?
Just what I've found with basses I've played. I've seldom found a thin necked bass with a good deep growl. Most produce a thin metallic tone, that most folk seem to call "punchy".

Bespoke pickups including covers - who makes them?
Grangur replied to Osiris's topic in Accessories and Misc
Take a look at http://jlguitars.com/ Jess hand winds pickups and makes custom pups, so I believe. Not sure about covers, but maybe he can suggest something. -
Hi all. It says "Collect SE London Only" in the tag. Is that not visible if you're on a mobile on something? I'll put it in the main post too.
The tags are for search words. So this thread will now come up if someone searches for "collection in SE London". We don't tend to look there for information. Also, as you suspected, its not visible on a mobile. Glwts

Good one Ray. I'm late to this thread. I wasn't so keen on my Cube 100: too metallic in tone for me. I've now got a 30 and it's great. The Cube 30 has the aux input and we can also use that to feed in Mrs G's keyboard so we can play duos with one amp! Good luck with yours, whatever turns up, I'm sure you'll find it worth the money.

Chunky. I prefer the more sold tone they give. I'm not a fan of the thiner tones from shallow necks.
Will you post? Where are you based? Alex
I travel into London fairly regularly for work. I could even wangle a visit to SE London tomorrow, if that's where the OP is? I also travel to St Albans too and will be there on Wednesday this week. Richard

Hi there dear BCers, I generally think I know what I'm doing on a bass on setting up etc.,. but this one has me surprised. I ordered 3 sets of Elixir Strings from Thomann. All arrived well and after a day or 3 I fitted the first set of strings on my Streamer . They sounded vibrant and full of zing. Now after, maybe a week the E & A are sounding dead. Thinking I'm losing it, I picked up my Corvette, with 9 month old Elixirs and, yes, they're more vibrant than the new Elixirs. So, dear friends... is it me? Have I missed something? is there something I should be changing in the setup? The deadness is particularly noticeable above the 9th fret. When I get above the 12th we're into real thud-country. Any ideas? I've already emailed Elixir, but not response as yet, but it is only 24 hours since I mailed. Many thanks for reading.

He does make a thing of "German hardware and Neck". So he's covering himself against comebacks, but easy to overlook at 1.00am in the morning if you get over excited at the chance of an affordable Wick. Not exactly up-front is he?
I'm pretty much the same with them, took them off after one gig, sounded nice but far too stiff for me to enjoy fingerstyle.
Each to their own I guess. I've fitted Chromes and liked them. (We need to be positive here. Although I know I'm the only one so far with a negative comment)
Rotosound!
.... were the makers of the worst set of strings I ever fitted. The G broke. I took it back to the shop and they took over a month to send me 1 string as replacement. And when fitted they were as stiff as fence wire.

I asked Warwick about buying a neck for a Corvette body that was up for sale. I was told by them that they sell necks, but on an exchange basis. You have to send the old one, Not that that will be a problem. Their email address is: Good luck. I really hope you get this fixed as painlessly as possible
So One Direction are right up there with the Beatles then? *sigh*
As you know the record industry is a commercial industry. It's long since stopped being just for the love of the art.
I don't see much if any talent. Not sure how much Paul can do about that. Blue
What I ment was connections might get him the initial exposure, but if the public aren't impressed then sales won't follow. Then if there's no sales he will disappear into obscurity. There's only so much his Dad can do.
Really sorry to hear this, my first time back on basschat now I'm in the market for new gear. Genuinely sorry for this terrible mistake, which is exactly what it was, I stood to gain nothing by lieing about the wood type. Worst thing is I clearly remember lookup the serial number myself before posting on here and there it is...clear as day, switch websites to copy full spec, copy and paste error at the highest level. I know it's not much consolation for your disappointment, especially after so much time has passed, but I truly am sorry.
Time heals and I don't hold grudges. Apology accepted. It is what it is. I've still got the bass. It gets played from time to time. Thanks Gareth for posting
Depends on which model.... I find these to be bright without being harsh (as I've found with other steel strings). And they have decent lasting life (meaning they hold their brightness/usefulness well).
In which case they're not my bag, but GLWTS. I'm sure someone would like them

Connection with his Dad might get him exposure, but the record sales will determine what he's really worth

NBD, NPuD Conundrum - Pickup placement kind of question
Grangur replied to Grangur's topic in Repairs and Technical
Ha! Glad you got the £50 Rockburn was that the last one? Personally I would leave the Rockburn alone - if it plays OK - & yes you need another bass to go with the pick up. BTW IIRC I did a kit for someone the other day who is using one of those Loureiros & he's rather delighted with it, proper old school
I think it might have been the last. I wouldn't have chosen red, but... it was so tempting. Thanks, John! The Rockburn was sold as graded. It had a strange rattle on the E string below the 7th fret. I couldn't find the problem, so I changed the E-string for an old one I had hanging about - problem solved! The electrics in the Rockburn is cheap, as you'd expect - small pots and very light-weight coils in the pups. So I'm very tempted to get one of Loureiros' split P pups too and fit that. After all, at £50 I've not got much to lose, and if I leave the original PG intact and don't rout outside the original line of the PG, I can restore it to original and sell it moving the pups on to a better bass. OR maybe I should go buy a better bass and do it to that one.
