2.
Hey, I have found a temporary solution. I use a Line6 backtrack to record tracks, and if i stick this before the mammoth it sounds a lot better. I dont think its perfect though as when the pinch knob it past 12 o'clock, it sounds bad once again. I dont have my passive bass with me at the moment but when i go home for easter, i'll be able to tell whether this works or not. I am still going to try the potentiometer as if i want to record anything whilst using the mammoth, i'll need to have another method of matching the impedance, but until then i at least have some way of using it which sounds good. Thanks for all your input and i'll post on here after i have tried the potentiometer and let you know how it works out. Tom
I think the Pinch knob controls the power to the transistors (from memory, I may be mistaken) - makes it sound more torn the higher you set it - this is the most susceptible to input levels. I always used to hate the way all my pedals sounded totally different with different basses & needed constantly resetting if I wanted to change between them. Nice one on the Line6 by the way - what's it like? I looked at the reviews but never got round to getting one to play with.
3. Volume and tone pots are essentially the same - the only difference is that a tone pot will have a capacitor which soaks up the higher frequencies. These are reasonable (and cheap): - http://www.maplin.co.uk/standard-potentiometers-2205 The only reason I tend not to use the metal shaft ones is that they're a pain to cut to length. Maplin also do the metal boxes, jacks & LEDs (although you'll need to run a power circuit if you want an LED to indicate if it's set for active or passive mode).
4. I built my Mammoth & found that the outputs from my Spector & Maverick were so hot that they dirtied the sound (more so than I was wanting). So I added an input variable resistor to drop the gain on the input to the circuit. Cheap and dirty but enabled me to attenuate the signal so that it didn't overload the pedal, result sounded great too. (since switching back to passive basses, I've removed it though I used a 100K variable resistor (the small kind so it fitted inside the box with minimal agro and no drilling etc needed) Once fitted it was just a case of testing and adjusting till the input sound was low enough (not too high / not too low) that the pedal worked properly. input from bass (jack) - - - - (pin1) | 100K VR - - - - - middle to Mammoth input (pin2) | ground - - - - - - - - - (pin3) Sorry for the crappy drawing
5. used to be on left of drummer at practice due to space then always on right during gigs. Made it really confusing when playing as I kept expecting to be able to hear him in one ear but was actually hearing him from the other. Always found that surreal. Given a choice I prefer to be on the left of drummer so can turn & watch without getting in way of cymbals etc + I have habit of looking away from band so when I stand on the left I'm naturally looking towards the rest of them.
6. My last band was pub/covers. Songs that went down well for us were:- Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire No Doubt - Just a Girl Nirvana - Teen Spirit G'n'R - Sweet Child of Mine (yes, I know - the guitarist was a bedroom slash wannabe) Rolling Stones - Honkey Tonk Woman AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long AC/DC - Highway to Hell Rainbow - Since You've Been Gone Undertones - Teenage Kicks The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go There were more but these seemed to always get the best reaction from the crowds/get the place jumping
7.
In the manual: http://www.gallien-krueger.com/manuals/Bac...es%20OM.pdf.pdf on page 8 it says regarding this footswitch: "15-Footswitch /A/B: ¼" jack for a standard single pole latching foot switch. It Switches from channel “A” to “B”. The “A/B” switch must be off for this function to operate." The pictures of the RFII footswitch indicate it can switch two functions using a stereo cable. Therefore, I'm not sure this is actually the pedal / pedal schematic you are looking for - I believe you want the RFI, or equivalent. The sales blurb for the RFI in fact states "The RF-I is a single button foot switch which is compatible with the Backline Series amplifiers". To me, it looks as simple as wiring up an on/off (i.e. latching not momentary) footswitch and plugging it in with a standard mono 1/4" cable. There's probably something cheap that will do this at your local shop, if you don't want to make it up yourself.
Thanks OzMike - I was mulling it over yesterday & decided to put a meter to it. Turns out it is just as you said - 1 way Latching (12v) As RF-I. Have had a look at latching foot switches & decided that I'll build one as I can match it to my existing pedals. GOing to see if it's possible to incorporate a status LED without needing additional power.
8. I'm looking for a footswitch to allow me to switch between the 2 channels on my Gallien Krueger Backline 210. I can't find anything (even a wiring diagram) for the current recommended switch for this model. Any help much appreciated. Cheers Simon
9. Thanks to CW, I'm constantly amazed with the different sounds he manages to produce & has driven me to experimenting with lots of 2 & 3 channel setups along with the compelling need to track down more pedals. He's cost me a fortune

12. Anyone around that can give me some pointers please?
13. Sold my Spector Euro 5 bass to Al - Great chap. Thanks man & hope you enjoy it Si
14. Thanks to a aldude on here I have sold my Spector Euro and am on the look out for a 4-string replacement. I've been ghosting all the fender topics as I love the sound and want to get something because I love the sound and the feel of it rather than it's all that was in the shop - kinda thing. I really want to compare the Jazz and Precision to see which one does it for me the most (or if I love them both then which one to get first + Have always loved the SB colouring. Cheers
15. HELP! I'm being kidnapped this weekend and this is putting the dampers on my plans to raid the usual haunts in Nottingham for a new bass. Can anyone help me please. Are there any 'good' music shops in either Sheffield / Doncaster or Lincoln worth a visit Have not had much luck with Google so would appreciate any pointers. Thank you
16. Call me Mr. Cheap but I swear by Wilko's sticky back velcro. Came across it by accident a couple of years ago & never looked back strip of about 1m (sticky back & both hook & loop) for a pound or two. + I haven't found anything it won't stick to
17.
Gareth, I'm not being funny but perhaps the issue is not within the bass but to do with the sound processing, I totally recommend you to play your jazz through a simple but very effective TEch 21 VT Bass pedal, it's guaranteed to beef up the thinnest bass possible and can make a real crappy amp sound the bollox, have a go at trying one and then report back, you will say Fran you were right, you're a f---ing genius!
BUMP - I'll second that as have done the exact same thing myself.

Battery life?

Hi there Not wanting to dis the battery users out there but when it comes to batteries, I only use them in basses. I got a power pack years ago which I run all my pedals off as I hate to have to keep plugging & unplugging all the pedals on my board. The only exception is my tuner pedal that I keep at the start of the chain - that one carries a battery incase I find myself somewhere where I have to tune up off stage (festival / multi-band night etc). That said - most pedals are not too bad on the juice - however there are a couple out there that'll drink more that a drummer. And it's not just that, you might get through a practice or a gig on one battery but then you'll be paranoid that it'll die the next time you use it so will end up changing it every time "Just in case".
19.
Cracking bass.... ...sorry, if it had 5 strings I'd be very interested.
Mine does & I put it up on here but no one was interested. I was starting to think that bass players had some sort of downer on Spector Euro models
20. I think I have to hold my hand up and say that I'm guilty of this. Way back when . . . I was 16, I decided to treat myself after I passed my GCSEs and decided that I'd like to learn an instrument & wanted it to be something different - so I walked into my local music store and took a look around. I settled on a bass that I liked the look of & after waiting half an hour whilst the owner creamed over a punter who just walked in to play albatros before walking out again, I finally got served. I picked my new instrument some metallic blue thing by a company I'd never heard of called Fender, paid my £70 & took it home. After playing with it a while I got together with some friends & we started a band - I picked it up fairly quickly & was soon looking for a better instrument as I didn't want to be seen with a bass made by a company called Fender - surely they had something to do with cars & wouldn't know anything about quality musical instruments. Oh and the 2 long pickups looked cheap as you could see the metal bits of the poles - whilst all my mates had cool guitars which were all black or looked like BC Rich / Les Paul etc. I ended up doing lots of nasty things with that instrument that ranged from numerous resprays to planing a chunk off the body (by accident) to deciding to take it fretless (lets not even talk about nearly frying the pickups when trying to tinker with the electronics). I finally took it apart & it was left in my wardrobe for years until finally found a new home at the local tip. It wasn't till years later that I actually came across a picture in google, did some research & found out that my first bass was an original, late 60's metallic blue, Fender Jazz bass. The shame Perhaps there should be a test that you have to pass before your allowed to buy instruments - if your too young or dumb - to prevent you harming innocent instruments lol
21. My 2p worth would be to just accept that if the bass player is dragging their knuckles along the ground then your onto a no winner so the easiest way is to take the option out of their hands. That way they can't make it go bang & you won't be worrying about your blood pressure the whole time they're up there. SO I present 3 options for your consideration 1) At a gig a couple of years back - I was asked if someone could use my amp & I said sorry no . . . sorry, the last guy who played through it made it go bang & cost me a ton to fix & I couldn't afford to fix it again 2) Say yes then secretly plug him into the PA DI without telling him 3) Say yes . . . but don't tell them about the cattle prod you've had installed in your amp or the remote switch that you are holding . . . . Just 1 press and his bass will be a melted puddle of electronics & crispy charcoal smoking in the stage lights
22. I could be going senile here - but I seem to remember reading a story (couple of years back) about some big band who had actually installed Uber-subs under the floor at their concerts so the fans could 'feel' the music better.
23.
You seem to know your sh*t m8,i was lost the minute you mentioned oscillicopes so i wouldnt attempt to advise you technically, financially though if replacing the humped bits and selling as a working amp is viable id defo repair it,sellling it for spares usually means letting it go for peanuts, ive a Peavey mk111 bass head with shagged outputs and was led to beleive the power transformer was rare and worth selling along with other bits n bobs,on ebay it shot up to £0.99p.....and it was me that f***in bid for it...id fix it.
Dougie - Have you still got the amp or is it long gone by now?
24.
....Get a 410 to go with your brand new 18" speaker??
I wanna 418 now . . . Can I get that? ohh and a 4k head so the sound engineer can hear me from inside the booth & he won't need to DI me then
25.
i tried to sell my spector on here a while back, the exact same bass for £700. it was emaculate with no dings. couldnt shift it. i wishing you luck for the sale
Cheers Jay I'm taking advice so if it goes, it goes & if no one's interested then will hang on to it. It's a great instrument - too many strings for me though
