1.
I used to work for a Rolls Royce dealer, when i first drove their cars I thought they were good but not ten or fifteen times better that a run of the mill normal car so I couldn't get my head round why someone would spend £250.000 on car, but to the people who were spending £250.000 on a car it is the same as most of us spending £500 on a car, the Fodera is probably not worth the money and is certainly not going to be ten times better that a decent Warwick / Spector etc however to those that can afford it it is like most of us buying a cracking Squier bass....I guess if you can afford it enjoy it
Diminishing returns is usually the argument here. However, in this case, I reckon...
i wonder why the other bass makers in New York don't price there basses in the same way.? I'm sorry but Fodera price there basses very high, because they have very cleverly developed a name for themselves, and a reputation. There is no way Vinnie and his team make an instrument so superior to Roger Sadowsky or NewYork Bass Works, that they need to charge so much more, its just nonsense. they charge that much because they know they can get away with it.
Nail on the head.
  2.
Would the Modern Player series have something to do with this? If Fender are getting good quality out of China, they have less need for Japan. Though, personally I think that if they have some Japanese production, there will be a market for people who want the instruments because they are made in Japan.
Not to mention the Japanese market itself. I'm no big fan of Japanese popular music, by and large, but from what I have observed of it, it seems that seem "experimental" Fender style instruments are very popular.
  3. I can't see that some simple [Amp] [Cab] [Combo] tags would make things that much messier.
  4.
i don't want buy your bass but i did notice your great playing. and i love your profile pic.
Thank you, Comrade.
  5.
Anyone ever sued Led Zeppelin? I'm sure I've seen a youtube vid of about a dozen songs they've ripped off!
It is interesting. There are songs like this, where imho the similarity is tenuous, and then there are examples like Led Zeppelin where they've literally covered a song without giving appropriate credit/royalties and nothing's ever happened. I also wonder if Marvin Gaye had been alive today, he'd have taken this to court. I imagine that he'd have been far less inclined to do so than whoever inherited his estate.
  6. SOLD Price drop to £675. For sale is my Fender American Standard Jazz bass. This bass was made in the USA in 2010 and purchased (new) by myself in 2012. It has been well-looked after and stored in a hardcase while not in use. Consequently the bass is in fantastic condition - as good as new. I've owned a few US Fenders and played a lot more, and this one is the best I've had my hands on. Unfortunately I've simply accrued too many Jazz-style basses recently, and my Warwick fulfils most of my bass needs, so this bass doesn't get played as much as it deserves. The bass is finished in sunburst with a maple board and original red tort scratchplate. All hardware and electronics are stock, nothing has been altered on the instrument. It will come with a non-original hard case, as regrettably the original was damaged when a bandmate left a PAR can which had just been removed from a lighting rig after being in use for 3 hours leaning against it at gig, resulting in a hole being melted into the side. Fortunately the bass wasn't in the case at the time. The bass can be collected from Leeds in West Yorkshire, or shipped by courier at the buyers expense. I would consider a trade for the right bass. I snapped some photos of the bass today: (click them to enlarge) You can hear the bass in action in this video I recorded a while ago: https://www.youtube....h?v=M0Rl_XRI3ys
  7. I would say that the audio demo wasn't massively helpful in demonstrating a functional tone, given the lack of midrange instruments in the recording. It seemed to me to be the sort of tone that would very quickly disappear in a typical mix, but it's hard to say conclusively without the evidence. Not massively keen on the tone of the drive too (coming from the TC RH750 I'm guessing). A bit "scratchy" for my tastes.
  8. Wonder if he owns any Ashdowns? I'd love to hear him play one of those Thunderbirds into one. For the "tone is all in the fingers" crowd.
  9. I found the tone a little too yellow for my tastes, YMMV.
  10. Does the EBMM Big Al count? It's probably the weirdest looking bass that I like.
  11.
For example, Eden's new amp heads. They have illuminated speaker output sockets. Why, I am still trying to fathom.
While seemingly useless on an amp, that would actually be handy on a cabinet. Pushed into the corner of a dark stage in a rushed set-up, every little can help. Although I suppose lighting up before you plug the thing in is a bit problematic. Glow in the dark speakon ports?
  12. There's a Christmas advert on TV at the moment with a piece of music on... I can't remember what it is, Gershwin perhaps. Anyhow, something about the first note sends a shudder up my spine. I realised that it's almost harmonically identical to the start of the default HTC alarm tone, which I've been conditioned to hate, what with it waking me up every day for the last four years. We did a rough demo recording of one our songs a few years ago on the cheap and used the only space we had available... the guitarists kitchen. Not a fabulous recording environment, and it meant sitting quiet while the performance happened. I'd mixed and bounced the track without noticing anything odd. A few years later though I was listening back to it, and kept reaching for my phone but not having a text. I realised that this always happened at the same point, but I never noticed anything while mixing. I mentioned it to the singer later and he confessed that his phone had gone off at that point. I listened back to the overhead stems and you could hear the faintest HTC text whistle. I just can't directly hear it in context of the mix, but my subconscious always tells me to check my phone. I guess the only reason I didn't pick up on it in the first place is that I'd never had a HTC phone at that point so wasn't conditioned to listen out for that whistle.
  13. MP3's are not the devil. One could debate the audibility of the data that an MP3 "looses" endlessly - the reality is that the vast majority of listeners would fail to identify the difference in a blind test, even on a high end system. The hit to audio integrity from brick-walled dynamics, anemic low end, and an exaggerated mid-range, however, are far more immediately observable. The loudness war is far more detrimental to the sound of modern music than any particular digital format.
  14. If you can find a standard Corvette from pre-2010, it will be made in Germany. I got mine for a steal - made in 2009 (so has the slim neck too). Beautiful instrument, killer sound and playability, and is just a quality thing to behold. Got it in mint condition for less than half the retail price. Bubinga body, Wenge fingerboard, and the neck is either Ovangkol or Wenge. Only downside is that it's bloody heavy. I've never weighed it, but it can't be far off the combined weight of both my Fender Jazz basses, even with the considerably smaller body. That's bubinga for you, I guess. Worth it though.
  15.
I can't believe were still ranting about BFH at 4am. Go to bed!
In my defence, I was in bed. Just not asleep. What better to do when you can't sleep than get in on a good old BF thread?
I'm just wondering why TKS has it's own sub forum and everyone else is relegated to the affiliates. Barefaced never got that honour and bass builders that everyone rates on here don't get that privilege. Just asking.
I can't imagine that there's much point without Alex participating in the threads there, and I suspect that he has better things to do than frequent a sub-forum where every thread invariably devolves into slagging match.
Oh, and I don't agree with the 'if you're close enough to see the rough finish, you're too close' argument. So much of our gear has details that most don't notice, but give personal satisfaction. My bass has ebony tone knobs. I don't think I anyone has ever noticed but me, yet it gives me great pleasure.
I completely understand what you mean about getting pleasure from nice things - but for me that tends to be more focused around my instrument, the thing I'm actually physically connecting with while I play. My cabinet is a more functional object, and I can rarely see or feel it while I'm playing. Perhaps it would be different if I practiced through it at home, but it only comes out for rehearsals and gigs.
  16. If you're close enough to see that my cabinet doesn't have a meticulously wrapped custom crocodile-skin tolex finish then you're probably also close enough to see that I haven't vac'd last gigs dirt out of the bottom of my pedal board, wiped off my cables, or polished the front of my amp. In other words, you're probably too close - certainly too close to appreciate the capacity of the product to perform the function for which it was designed (audio, in case you forgot). From a sufficient distance to experience the audio properly, it definitely looks the part too. Having dragged the thing to and from countless gigs, even at times on public transport, I can't say I've ever had an issue with regards to the ergonomic design either. As has been alluded to by other posters, any such issues can probably be attributed to operator error.
  17.
Would you connect the VT via the front or effects in/out ?
I run a VT bass deluxe into a GB Shuttle 6.0 into a S12T. I connect the VT to the input of the Shuttle, as I prefer the tone when it's been run through the valve pre, and you have the additional EQ options available to you (the variable mids can be handy). Definitely a great way to drive a Super Twelve though.
  18. Hi folks, It's chucking it down right now and I've got somewhere to be with my bass... just wondering if anyone has any experiences with the Fender SKB hard cases in the rain? It's one of the square 2008+ ones. I reckon it'll be fine, but I don't want to take any risks with my bass getting wet. Cheers
  19. I found the whole thing quite distasteful if I'm honest. I don't really see what the bass solo added to an already weak song. Just one person's opinion though.
