6-String Basses | Modulus | Roscoe | Spector | Warwick - Comparison
eude replied to AngelDust's topic in Bass Guitars
Actually, this Custom Shop Thumb BO has a similar hue to the tone >> https://youtu.be/V-bu9T1xuEE That one has a Swamp Ash body with a weird funky coloured in top, so the sound has to be the neck, fingerboard and pickup position, as that's consistent on that and the bass in the comparison vid.
My experience with it was that I couldn't use the bridge pickup alone, even with the (very powerful) preamp set so that it shouldn't be a thin sound. Which was a real pain for me as I generally prefer the sound of a bridge pickup. The twin Jazz pickup was just way too close to solo. Just remembered I made this when I was trying to sell mine. It's literally just me pissing around playing whatever came to my head so don't expect an actual decent demo. All plugged straight into audacity. Ignore my shoddy playing too!
Thank you very much for this mate. I see what you mean, the classic Warwick tone just ain't there, at all. Having said that though, it still sounds very nice. It's got a very rich complex tone. It sounds really lovely on your Mr Bungle play along video.
Great video & nice playing. Another vote for the Warwick, the tone just blows the others out the water for me. I've kind of gone off their looks in recent years (favouring more "traditional" styling now) but there is just something about the sound that still works very well - I don't know what it is that's making the difference, part of me thinks it's the neck-wood's they use but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be able to say what is is exactly.
I think you're right, the neck cover the largest amount of real estate under the strings, so that and the fingerboard are likely to be adding the magic. I also think the Thumb pickup placement can't hurt when it comes to adding a bit more punch too. Eude -

Hmmm, always wondered about the Dirty Blonde's sound. Was the bridge pickup any use, or was it a little too close to the bridge to be used on its own? Funny, you don't see many of the higher profile Warwick players with that particular bass, the only one I saw was Weezer's bassist, and given thae most of the time he plays a P Bass, it makes perfect sense now!
It does. I say that as someone who has owned an 8lb thumb bass with an Ash body and Maple neck. It did have different pickup configuration which of course changes the tone considerably but even unplugged. The bubinga thumb bass sounded like a thumb bass. The other one just didn't. Great bass right enough...just not for me.
Did you have a Dirty Blonde then? Always wondered what they sounded like, fairly 'normal' then? Eude -
Tonewood makes a helluva difference, not matter what anyone says. If that thumb weighed 8lb, was made of ash and had a maple neck, totally different sounding bass. However, at 11lb plus, Bubinga and wenge, it sound like that. Blooming beautiful.
That Spector certainly won't be lightweight though, maple body! Amazing to hear the difference, its clearly not just the weight of the wood. I reckon the wenge neck must have the biggest impact on the sound. Eude -

I used to wear mine pretty low to get it to hang right, but that can limit technique a little too. They are pretty heavy too, but you kinda get used to that. That tone though, sublime... Eude -
It's actually made me have GAS for a thumb bass again...
My Thumb GAS will never go away, but man alive I don't miss the awful balance and reach to 1st position. They're gorgeous basses and incredible sounding instruments, but they don't fit short arses like myself so well... Eude -

So it looks like the Warwick has gone down the best, with the majority at least. What do you reckon it's doing right? Is it the pickup placement? That's the only obvious difference, bar the fact it's a 34" scale when the others are 35". Eude -
It didn't seem it, they were great for finger style but not deep enough for slap or Motown/soul. But that's just my opinion.
Cool, I get you then mate. I'm making do with my couple of 1x10s for now, considering moving them on for a bigger cabinet, but probably not really worth it for now. Only really playing at home at the moment, and having a little 1x10 that sits under my desk is great, and the spare doesn't exactly take up much room, so it's actually quite a family/wife friendly setup Really keen to hear how you get on with the new gear though. I've had a play with Merton's RM800 and I was very impressed! It's also an extremely handsome rig. Eude
Will keep updating as my time with it goes on, but the instant 15" 'whumpf' was back, and I'm so relieved to have it back.
I take it the Mi12s didn't push out as much bass then? Eude

Thanks for posting! Love the sound of the Warwick over the others by a mile. Another thing to note that the 34" low B wasn't any less focused or punchy than the 35" ones, to my ear at least. Cheers, Eude -
I'm considering selling my 2 Mi10 cabs to buy a single RM-112T-EVO... Eude
Not really close according to that video... They certainly look the part, but the sound is very clean. Sounds to my ears more like it has a set of Barts in it than anything approaching Wal pickups.
Yup, if the Wal pickups were easy to copy, there'd be a lot of them on the market by now. The closest from what I can make out are the ACG MC ones, but they're not exactly cheap and rightly so. Eude
Ha! You wouldn't be saying that if you had ever saw me play a guitar! I haven't got my ticket for the bash yet cause of money issues but hoping to get a weekend ticket before they're all gone!
I've not got my ticket yet, for similar reasons, but I'm definitely going, even if I have to set up in the car park! Eude
Nice work....the second isn't my style but I appreciate the work that has gone into that!

That Tchib is very very nice! Reminds me of a few Skervesen guitars I've saw.
I appreciate it would be an acquired taste, but it works beautifully in real life. Cameron, I'll bring it along to the Moffat Bash if you fancy a widdle. Eude

Thanks guys, I'm a lucky chap! Wish I was a bit better on geetar, but I guess I'm going to enjoy practicing! Eude

That sounds very interesting mate, thank you for the review! 'Heft' is the only thing missing from the sound of a class D from my experience, so if this thing can manage it, I think it will get a lot of fans. Hopefully, however they've managed it will trickle through the rest of the manufacturers too now Eude
Now that throws a different light on it. I've never played a SC or even looked at one close up. If the top extension on the body is not reinforcing the neck, then I wonder what the point is - but that's because I don't like the look of them.
I guess the point is that some of us do like the look of them, it's all down to aesthetic. Some of us prefer the look of a single cut to a more traditional, or dare I say it 'old fashioned' design, maybe because we like to be a bit different. Eude
-
I think some folks are getting a little too caught up in the neck design focusing on stability, lack of dead spot etcs. It's quite clear that these kinds of issues can be resolved just fine without a Single Cut design. As far as I'm concerned, the main argument for a Single Cut bass is if you like the look of it, just the as if you prefer a Jazz Bass, an SG, or Musicman for example. Almost all of my Single Cut basses have been bolt-on basses, the most recent ones have the same neck joint as a non Single Cut would have, still not dead spots or stability issues, they just look sexier Eude

Fantastic! What preamp and pups did you end up with? Basses always look better in the flesh, but yours still looks pretty darned tasty in your phone snaps! Eude
Check out this Ken Smith... not sure about that at all!
Urgh, that's even worse!
This is a really good looking bass-to-be. Who builds it? Yourself?
It's Sadowsky's new singlecut design, I'm not very impressed with it to be honest, they're awfully late to the party too... Don't you think this M Bass Brooklyn Elite is a lot nicer? I'f I was in the market for a SC Jazz, that's certainly where I'd be looking >> Eude
I was never a fan of SC basses until I stumbled across a Matt Garrison video. Fell in love with his Fodera and that started me looking at other SC basses and then came across the ACG Finn SC R Type. Instantly put in an order and can't wait for it to arrive. For me, any tonal benefit is negligible, it's purely an aesthetic preference, which I happen to love! Your ACG Finn SC classic is beautiful!!
Thanks dude! Can't wait to see your ACG come to life! Eude
